This study has carried out the coagulation tests for tannery wastewater including high-level suspended solids and organic matters to determine the optimum pH and coagulant dosage and to characterize several coagulants for coagulation. In case of optimum pH range test, we know that multi-coagulants are not only cost-effective but also applicable from acidic pH range to alkaline pH range widely, while single-coagulant are useful in limited pH range. Removal efficiency for using of the multi-coagulants appeared more efficient than that of single-coagulant. Especially, sulfates(alum-ferric sulfate : AFS & alum-magnesium sulfate : AMS) are more effective than chlorides (alum-ferric chloride : AFC & alum-magnesium chloride AMC). In comparison of residual turbidity related to settling time between alum and alum-ferric sulfate-magnesium sulfate(AFM), it took to 40 minutes using of alum but 5 minutes using of alum-ferric sulfate-magnesium sulfate(AFM) until constant residual turbidity are reached.

Thyrotropin(TSH)-secreting pituitary adenoma is a rare disorder causing hyperthyroidism, which is one of the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of TSH. It is characterized by high serum T₄, T₃ as well as elevated serum TSH. Generally serum free α-subunit concentration is also increased and α- subunit/TSH molar ratio is more than 1. This α- subunit/TSH molar ratio is a clue of diagnosis as well as a useful marker of therapeutic response. We experienced a case of 29-years old man with hyperthyroidism due to TSH-secreting pituitary adenoma. He was underwent 1.5cm sized pituitary tumor removal via transsphenoidal approach in our neurosurgery department. In immunohistochemical stain monotonous tumor cells showed strong positive reaction to antihuman TSH antibody and equivocal reaction to ACTH antibody. After operation, goiter size was progressively decreased and also serum T₄, T₃and TSH were decreased in nearly normal range. However, he showed elevated serum T₄, T₃and TSH after 1 month due to residual tumor. So he received radiation therapy thereafter. In this case the α -subunit and α-subunit/TSH molar ratio were not increased. So we report a case of TSH-secreting pituitary macroadenoma which had low α-subunit/TSH molar ratio with a literature review.

Rice stripe virus (RSV) is a viral disease that seriously impacts rice production in East Asia, most notably in Korea, China, and Japan. Highly RSV-resistant transgenic japonica rice plants were generated using a dsRNAi con-struct designed to silence the entire sequence region of the RSV-CP gene. Transgenic rice plants were inoculated with a population of viruliferous insects, small brown plan-thoppers (SBPH), and their resistance was evaluated using ELISA and an infection rate assay. A correlation between the expression of the RSV-CP homologous small RNAs and the RSV resistance of the transgenic rice lines was discovered. These plants were also analyzed by comparing the expression pattern of invading viral genes, small RNA production and the stable transmission of the RSV resistance trait to the T3 generation. Furthermore, the agronomic trait was stably transmitted to the T4 generation of transgenic plants.

Biosynthesis of indole-3-acetate (IAA) from L-tryptophan via indole-3-pyruvate pathway requires three enzymes including aminotransferase, indole-3-pyruvate decarboxylase, and indole-3-acetate dehydrogenase. To establish a bio-based production of IAA, the aspC, ipdC, and iad1 from Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, and Ustilago maydis, respectively, were expressed under control of the tac, ilvC, and sod promoters in C. glutamicum. Cells harboring ipdC produced tryptophol, indicating that the ipdC product is functional in this host. Analyses of SDS-PAGE and enzyme activity revealed that genes encoding AspC and Iad1 were efficiently expressed from the sod promoter, and their enzyme activities were 5.8 and 168.5 nmol/ min/mg-protein, respectively. The final resulting strain expressing aspC, ipdC, and iad1 produced 2.3 g/l and 7.3 g/l of IAA from 10 g/l L-tryptophan, respectively, in flask cultures and a 5-L bioreactor.
Hop 유래 Xanthohumol 화합물에 의한 Proteasome계의 유도발현

The proteasome plays a major role in the degradation of abnormal proteins within the cell. Therefore, repressed proteasome function is accepted as one of factors contributing the pathogenesis of multiple degenerative diseases. In the present study, we have observed that xanthohumol C, which is one of prenylated flavonoids from hops, increases the expression of the proteasome subunits through the Nrf2 pathway. Treatment of murine renal epithelial TCMK-1 cells with xanthohumol C and its methoxymethoxy-derivative elevated the expression of the Antioxidant Response Element (ARE)-driven reporter gene, as well as Nrf2-target genes including NAD(P)H: quinoneoxidoreductaes 1 (Nqo1). Transcript levels for the catalytic subunits of the proteasome Psmb5 and Psmb6 were increased by these compounds. The activation of the psmb5 promoter by xanthohumol C was abolished when the ARE in this promoter was mutated, indicating that proteasome induction was mediated by the Nrf2-ARE pathway. These results suggest that xanthohumol compounds from hops have a potential benefit on various oxidative stress-associated human diseases through the induction of the proteasome.
환경변인에 따른 초등학생의 특성불안과 사회성에 관한 연구

The purpose of this study is to analyze and diagnose the degree of the trait anxiety and sociability of the primary schools children in relation to environmental variables and to make use of the results to provide some helpful information for the guidance of children. The subjects of this research were 822 preschool children in Taegu Metropolitan City. The data was analyzed with respect to frequency percentage, reliability, factor analysis, correlation, path analysis and Scheffe's test, employing SPSS PC program. The following conclusions were drawn from this study. First, there were statistically significant differences between the trait-anxiety of children and the environmental variables, family patterns, educational level of fathers, grade, reprimand of parents, family atmosphere, degree of satisfaction with family life, monthly allowance, school life and extracurricular activities. Second, there were statistically significant differences between the sociability of children and the environmental variables, educational level of parents, motive for extracurricular activities, health condition, teacher-child relationships, reprimand of parents and teacher, family atmosphere, degree of satisfaction with family life, monthly allowance, school life and extracurricular activities. Third, the variables which have direct effect on the sociability of children in view of cause and effect between the environmental variables and the level of sociability caused by trait-anxiety are ; the degree of satisfaction with school life, reprimand of mother, trait-anxiety. The variable which have indirect effect on it by means of media-variable trait-anxiety are; the degree of satisfaction with family life and school life and extracurricular activities, health condition, reprimand of father and mother. Thus, the level of sociability was estimated to be higher when there were lower levels of trait anxiety, greater satisfaction with family life and school life and extracurricular activities, better health condition, and less reprimand of parents.
