The vitamin-C-synthesizing enzyme senescent marker protein 30 (SMP30) is a cold resistance gene in Drosophila, and vitamin C concentration increases in brown adipose tissue post-cold exposure. However, the roles of SMP30 in thermogenesis are unknown. Here, we tested the molecular mechanism of thermogenesis using wild-type (WT) and vitamin C-deficient SMP30-knockout (KO) mice. SMP30-KO mice gained more weight than WT mice without a change in food intake in response to short-term high-fat diet feeding. Indirect calorimetry and cold-challenge experiments indicated that energy expenditure is lower in SMP30-KO mice, which is associated with decreased thermogenesis in adipose tissues. Therefore, SMP30-KO mice do not lose weight during cold exposure, whereas WT mice lose weight markedly. Mechanistically, the levels of serum FGF21 were notably lower in SMP30-KO mice, and vitamin C supplementation in SMP30-KO mice recovered FGF21 expression and thermogenesis, with a marked reduction in body weight during cold exposure. Further experiments revealed that vitamin C activates PPARα to upregulate FGF21. Our findings demonstrate that SMP30-mediated synthesis of vitamin C activates the PPARα/FGF21 axis, contributing to the maintenance of thermogenesis in mice.
Conceptual Design Analysis for the Communications and Broadcasting Satellite Payload System

ETRI has been developing the Ku and Ka band communications satellite payload system to provide the multimedia services, such as satellite Internet, DTH (Direct to Home), VOD (Video on Demand), and so on. ETRI in cooperation with domestic companies are under design phase for the payload system development. At a conceptual design phase, ETRI studies service requirement and system performance specifications. After analyzing system parameters, we confirm that system performance satisfies system requirement specification. This paper focuses on the conceptual design analysis to verify the system performance specification, especially EIRP, G/T, SFD, etc.

The protein back-extraction processes were discussed from the viewpoint of the micelle-micelle interaction. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) suppressing the cluster formation of reverse micelle (positive value of ${\beta}pr)$ has the high back-extra cted fraction (Eb), but cytochrome c enhancing the formation of reverse micelle (negative value of ${\beta}pr)$ has the low back-extracted fraction, relatively. We have also examined quantitatively the effects of alcohol addition and protein solubilization on the percolation process of reverse micelle. The alcohols suppressing the formation of micellar cluster (high values of ${\beta}t)$, remarkably improved the back-extraction rates of BSA and cytochrome c. The values of ${\beta}t$, defined by the variation of percolation process, and the back-extraction behavior of proteins have a good linear correlation. These results indicate that the micelle-micelle interaction or micellar clustering plays an important role in the back-extraction process of proteins.
다목적 실용위성 1호 관제시스템의 위성궤도 및 자세운용 기능에 대한 성능확인

다목적 실용위성 1호는 한국전자통신연구원에서 개발한 관제시스템을 이용하여 성공적으로 운용되고 있다. 한국항공우주연구소에 설치된 관제시스템은 TTC 서브시스템, 위성운용 서브시스템, 임무분석 및 계획 서브시스템, 위성 시뮬레이터 서브시스템으로 구성되어 있다. 다목적 실용위성 관제시스템의 주요 기능들은 일년간의 성공적인 위성운용을 통해서 검증되었다. 본 논문에서는 임무분석 및 계획 서브시스템과 시뮬레이터 서브시스템에 대한 주요기능을 검증하였다. 발사초기 위성관제에 있어서 궤도결정 및 궤도조정에 대한 성능을 기술하였으며 위성의 원격측정 데이터를 이용한 지상 자세결정에 대한 결과도 기술하였다. The Korea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAI)-l have been successfully operated by the Mission Control Element(MCE) developed by ETRI. The MCE, located in KARI, consists of four major subsystems such as the Tracking, Telemetry, and Command(TTC) subsystem, the Satellite Operations Subsystem(SOS), the Mission Analysis and Planning Subsystem(MAPS), and satellite SIMulator(SIM) subsystem. Most of all major functions in MCE have been demonstrated and verified during one year of the successful operation. The orbit and attitude related functions in MAPS and SIM were demonstrated in this paper. The orbit determinations and orbit maneuvers in Launch and Early Orbit Phase(LEOP) operations were verified. The ground based attitude determination is also performed using playback telemetry data.

다목적실용위성시스템 개발 사업은 다중 임무를 수행하는 저궤도 위성 및 관제시스템, 수신처리시스템 등의 지상국을 개발하는 사업이다. 첫 다목적실용위성시스템 개발 사업은 1999 년에 성공리에 마무리되어 1999 년 12 월에 발사된 다목적실용위성 1 호는 현재 그 임무를 충실하게 수행하며 순항 중이다. 다목적실용위성 2 호 시스템 개발사업은 2000 년에 시작되어 위성 및 지상국의 개발이 활발히 진행되고 있다. 다목적실용위성 2 호를 감시하고 제어할 관제시스템은 S/W 재사용성을 향상시키기 위하여 객체지향설계기법을 사용하여 설계되었다. KOrea Multi Purpose SATellite (KOMPSAT) project is a series of development of LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite with multiple missions and its ground stations which are MCE (Mission Control Element) and IRPE (Image Reception and Processing Element). The first KOMPSAT (KOMPSAT-1) project is successfully completed in 1999, and the satellite, which was launched in December of 1999, is currently performing its mission very successfully with the support and control from MCE. Starting from the tear 2000, the development of KOMPSAT-2 and its ground control system is on the way. For the development of Mission Control Element which will monitor and control KOMPSAT-2, object oriented design method is applied to increase the reusability.
