        Reinforced concrete(R/C) is commonly used to structures because they have many merits that compressive strength, economy and so on. However, reinforced concrete has a crack at the tensile section which is due to the relatively lower tensile strength than its compressive strength. Latex modified concrete(LMC) has higher tensile and flexural strength than the ordinary portland cement, due to the interconnections of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles. The purpose of this study was to investigate the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beam with latex modified concrete, having the main experimental variables such as concrete types(ordinary portland cement concrete, latex modified concrete), latex contents(0%, 15%), flexural steel ratios(0.012, 0.0235), and with/without shear reinforcement. The beam of LMC showed considerably higher initial cracking loads and ductility than that of OPC, but, similar to ultimate strength and deflection. This might be attributed to the interlocking of hydrated cement and aggregates by a film of latex particles, water retention due to hydrophobic, and colloidal properties of the latexes resulting in reduced water evaporation. The beam with latex modified concrete could be adopted at field for controlling and reducing the tensile crack due to its higher tensile strength.

        In this study the antimicrobial spectrum and sensitivity of a liquid formulation of enrofloxacin against the major six pathogenic bacteria isolated from the diseased poultry in Korea were evaluated in comparison with ciprfloxacin (CFX), gentamicin (GM) and penicillin (PC). A liquid form of enrofloxacin, a test material and ciprofloxacin showed at least 83% antibacterial activity against all of six test pathogenic microorganisms at the fixed concentration of 10 ㎍/㎖. Gentamicin and penicillin revealed much lower antibacterial activity at the same condition. We evaluated the liquid form of enrofloxacin as having widespread antibacterial spectrum against poultry infections. The liquid form of enrofloxacin showed potent antibacterial activity, with the MIC range being 0.12∼2 ㎍/㎖ against Gram positives, 0.06∼2 ㎍/㎖ against Gram negatives and 0.5∼2 ㎍/㎖ against Mycoplasma spp. These values were equivalent to or somewhat higher than those of ciprofloxacin, but much lower than those of gentamicn and penicillin. This new liquid form of enrofloxacin would find its way in application of mixing with drinking water for the prevention and treatment of diverse infections in chickens.

        We evaluated the efficacy of the liquid form of enrofloxacin against poultry respiratory and digestive infections, the major problems in the poultry industry, from diverse diagnosis viewpoints. Results obtained through this study were as follows: 1. The liquid form of enrofloxacin showed good acceptability to poultry owing to no abhorrence to the drug by chickens, which indicated its suitability for mixing in drinking water. 2. The application of the enrofloxacin formulation improved the productivity of the chicken farm to a great extent by lowering the death toll of chicken raised in the farm. 3. The use of the drug shortened the days to the market, and increased the body weight at the time of marketing. 4. Preventive and therapeutic effects of the liquid enrofloxacin were observed higher than ampicillin, a major antibiotic used in poultry farming. From above results, the liquid form of enrofloxacin would find its use for the prevention and treatment of digestive and respiratory infections, let alone the growth promotion and feed efficiency, especially in the chicken farming practice.

        조선소 근로자에서의 국소진동장해 진단방법에 대한 평가

        A hand-arm vibration syndrome, local vibration illness, occurs in some workers who use hand held vibration tools. It consists of white fingers, diffusely distributed finger neuropathy, pain in the hand and arm, and a small excess risk of osteoarthritis. This study is aimed to identify effective methods to confirm local vibration illness among various health exams, which are mentioned in worker's special health exam regulation. In addition, this study is aimed to quantitatively assess the daily vibration exposure level as a major determinant of vibration illness. The subjects, 46 vibration workers, were selected according to the results of the first special health exam about vibration hazards at shipbuilding industry in 1997. They all had experiences of work related blanching of fingers. Fifteen controls, who had no vibration exposure at all, were also recruited to compare their test results with the results of vibration workers. We adopted I subjective and 6 objective tests to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility for confirming local vibration illness. These tests were history taking of subjective symptoms according to the Stockholm classification, checking blood pressure of finger, checking grasp power, checking finger skin temperature, nail-bed pressing test, vibration perceptional threshold test, and skin prick test for pain perception. Among these, checking skin temperature, nail-bed pressing test, and vibration perception test included cold water provocations. We also estimated some vibration exposure levels of hand held vibration tools by using previously published data from one automobile company. In conclusion, history taking of subjective symptoms according to the Stockholm classification, nail-bed pressing test, and vibration perceptional threshold test were discovered to be effective to diagnose local vibration illness. Furthermore, vibration perceptional threshold on right fingers showed a dose-response relationship to daily vibration exposure levels. The parameter β was 0.0005(±0.0002), and statistically significant by REM(random effects model).

        ATP Measurement Predicts Porcine Islet Transplantation Outcome in Nude Mice

        Current nude mice islet transplantation studies cannot be used prospectively. Therefore, to predict transplantation outcomes, reliable and rapid assays for islet quality assessment are warranted. This study evaluated the predictive power of the porcine islet ATP content on the outcomes of islet transplantation in nude mice. Here, we report that the ATP measurement using a small number of handpicked islets with a diameter of 100 to 150 μm is a good predictor of islet graft efficacy in nude mice. Using receiver-operator characteristic analysis, the area under the curve of the ATP content using a small number of handpicked islets was 0.867 (95% confidence interval 0.744–0.989, P<0.001). The sensitivity and the specificity measured were 83.3% and 73.3%, respectively. In conclusion, a simple and a rapid measurement of intraislet ATP content could be a promising substitute for current nude mice islet transplantation studies.

        Design and Evaluation of Automotive Laser Headlight Based on the Scanned Beam on Phosphor-in-Glass Plate

        We designed and evaluated an optical system of automotive laser headlight with the application of phosphor-in-glass (PiG) plate as a wavelength converter and the scanned laser beam using Microelectromechanical system (MEMS) scanner to improve the optical and thermal performance of the PiG plate. By applying laser scanning, it was improved on both deviations of correlated color temperature (CCT) and intensity in white light emitted through the PiG plate. A TiO₂ film was also applied under the PiG plate to further improve the CCT and intensity deviation by additional scattering effect. In addition, it was confirmed that there is little temperature deviation on the PiG plate of 0.2℃ with the scanned laser beam, resulting in the reduced damage on the PiG plate. By experimental evaluation, we have confirmed that PiG plate can be used as a good wavelength converter with an aid of laser scanning for various laser application fields including automotive laser headlight.

        공적 공간에서의 무시와 모욕의 의미에 대하여

        이 논문은 공적 공간(public space)에서 특정한 범주의 사람들이 특정한 상황에서 겪게 되는 무시와 모욕의 의미를 역사적인 관점에서 고찰하려는 시도이다. 현대사회에서 공적 공간에서 조우하는 개인들은 서로에 대한 존중을 표시할 의무를 갖는다. 고프만은 이러한 의무의 수행을 상호작용 의례라고 명명하고 자세히 분석한 바 있다. 그런데 상호작용 의례가 언제나 지켜지는 것은 아니다. 어떤 경우에 의례적 코드의 위반이 합법적으로 일어나는가? 그리고 그 의미는 무엇인가? 이 논문은 이 질문에 답하기 위해 ``의례적 평등``의 개념을 중심으로 일련의 가설을 제시한다. 그리고 역사적 사례들의 검토를 통해 이러한 접근의 유용성을 확인한다. 논문의 구성은 다음과 같다. 우선 고프만이 분석한 상호작용의 의례가 개인의 인격에 대한 의례이자 그의 내부에 있는 ``사회적인 것``을 인정하는 행위라는 것, 그리하여 개인의 성원권을 확인하는 효과를 갖는다는 것을 논증한다. 다음으로 근대화를 그전까지 ``사람대접``을 받지 못한 사람들이 공동체의 완전한 성원권을 획득해나가는 과정으로 이해할 것을 제안하며, 이런 관점에서 현대사의 몇몇 풍경을 새롭게 조망한다. This paper attempts to examine, from a historical perspective, the signification of disregard and contempt which are undergone by certain categories of population in a community. In modern societies, the members have a mutual obligation to express their respect one another in public space. Erving Goffman called this kind of performance ``interaction ritual`` and analysed it in detail. However, it seems to me that the ``interaction ritual`` is not always respected to all persons in society. When does the infraction of interaction ritual occur ``legitimately``? And what is the sociological meaning of this infraction? In order to answer these questions, I also discuss how this approach could be useful for sociological analysis of modernity, examining some historical cases. The paper is organized as follows. First, I argue that interaction ritual as an act of recognizing ``the social`` in the individual directly concerns the personal dignity of the individual, influencing on his ``membership`` in society. Second, taking some research findings in the field of social history, I show what kind of changes the process of modernization in Korea brought on the patterns of interaction in public places. In conclusion, I propose to newly conceptualize the ``modernization`` as a historical process in which a discriminated part of population in traditional society ``become human-beings`` acquiring their community membership.
