Evidence and Implications of Nonlinear Flood Response in a Small Mountainous Watershed

<P>This study investigates the impact of event characteristics on runoff dynamics during extreme flood events observed in an 8.5-km2 experimental watershed located in South Korea. A high-quality data set containing the 31 most extreme flood events with event rainfall in excess of 50mm were analyzed using an event-based rainfall-runoff model; the revitalized flood hydrograph (ReFH) routinely used for design flood estimation in the United Kingdom. The ReFH model was fitted to each event in turn, and links were investigated between each of the two model parameters controlling runoff volume and response time, respectively, and event characteristics such as rainfall depth, duration, and intensity, and also antecedent soil moisture. The results show no link between the parameter controlling runoff volume and any of the event characteristics, but identified a dependence between response time and rainfall depth. These results show that the linear unit hydrograph fails to adequately represent a reduction in watershed response time observed for the more extreme events. A new and dynamic link between the unit hydrograph shape and rainfall depth is introduced. The consequence of the observed nonlinearity in response time is to increase design peak flow by between 50% for a 10-year return period, and up to 80% when considering the probable maximum flood.</P>
Regionalisation of a PDM Model for Catchment Runoff in a Mountainous Region of Korea

This study aims to regionalize a rainfall-runoff model within the mountainous Geum River catchment, Korea. A version of the Probability Distributed Moisture model is applied to 19 gauged sub-catchments. A Monte Carlo based method is used for the calibration and validation of the model using three objective functions targeting overall performance, as well as low and high flow regimes specifically. A set of multivariate regression models linking model parameters and catchment characteristics is developed. The regionalised and locally calibrated models are compared using the leave-one-out cross-validation method. The validation results show that the regionalised model has equal or better performance than the locally calibrated model at 12 (for high flow model), 10 (for low flow model) and 10 catchments (for overall flow regime model) respectively. This study shows the potential of the regionalisation of the Probability Distributed Moisture model within the Geum River region. The results show that the suggested regionalized models for high and low flow regimes are better than a single model for the overall flow regime model. It is expected that this approach can usefully support water resource management in comparable ungauged mountainous, monsoon-affected catchments.

<P>ABSTRACT</P><P>Measuring solar-like oscillations in an ensemble of stars in a cluster, holds promise for testing stellar structure and evolution more stringently than just fitting parameters to single field stars. The most-ambitious attempt to pursue these prospects was by Gilliland et al. who targeted 11 turn-off stars in the open cluster M67 (NGC 2682), but the oscillation amplitudes were too small (<20 μmag) to obtain unambiguous detections. Like Gilliland et al. we also aim at detecting solar-like oscillations in M67, but we target red giant stars with expected amplitudes in the range 50–500 μmag and periods of 1 to 8 h. We analyse our recently published photometry measurements, obtained during a six-week multisite campaign using nine telescopes around the world. The observations are compared with simulations and with estimated properties of the stellar oscillations. Noise levels in the Fourier spectra as low as 27 μmag are obtained for single sites, while the combined data reach 19 μmag, making this the best photometric time series of an ensemble of red giant stars. These data enable us to make the first test of the scaling relations (used to estimate frequency and amplitude) with an homogeneous ensemble of stars. The detected excess power is consistent with the expected signal from stellar oscillations, both in terms of its frequency range and amplitude. However, our results are limited by apparent high levels of non-white noise, which cannot be clearly separated from the stellar signal.</P>
Major clinical research advances in gynecologic cancer in 2017

In 2017, 10 topics were selected as major clinical research advances in gynecologic oncology. For cervical cancer, efficacy and safety analysis results of a 9-valent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine and long-term impact of reduced dose of quadrivalent vaccine were updated. Brief introduction of KEYNOTE trials of pembrolizumab, a monoclonal antibody that blocks the interaction between programmed death (PD)-1 and its ligands, PD-L1 and PD-L2, followed. Tailored surveillance programs for gynecologic cancer related with Lynch syndrome and update on sentinel lymph node mapping were reviewed for uterine corpus cancer. For ovarian cancer, 5 topics were selected including poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases inhibitors and immunotherapy. The other potential practice changers covered in this review were lymphadenectomy in advanced disease, secondary cytoreductive surgery in recurrent disease, weekly dose-dense regimen for first-line chemotherapy, incorporation of bevacizumab maintenance in platinum-sensitive recurrent disease, and effect of platinum-free interval prolongation. Conflicting opinions of academic societies on periodic pelvic examination were introduced in conjunction with relevant literature review. For the field of radiation oncology, results of 2 big trials, The Postoperative Radiation Therapy in Endometrial Carcinoma-3 and Gynecologic Oncology Group-258, for endometrial cancer and recent advance in high-dose-rate brachytherapy for cervical cancer were reported. Topics for breast cancer covered adjuvant capecitabine after preoperative chemotherapy, adjuvant pertuzumab and trastuzumab in early human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive disease, olaparib for metastatic cancer in patients with a germline BRCA mutation, 20-year risks of recurrence after stopping endocrine therapy at 5 years, and contemporary hormonal contraception and the risk of breast cancer.

<P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P>The first detection of the period doubling phenomenon is reported in the <I>Kepler</I> RR Lyrae stars RR Lyr, V808 Cyg and V355 Lyr. Interestingly, all these pulsating stars show Blazhko modulation. The period doubling manifests itself as alternating maxima and minima of the pulsational cycles in the light curve, as well as through the appearance of half‐integer frequencies located halfway between the main pulsation period and its harmonics in the frequency spectrum. The effect was found to be stronger during certain phases of the modulation cycle. We were able to reproduce the period‐doubling bifurcation in our non‐linear RR Lyrae models computed by the Florida–Budapest hydrocode. This enabled us to trace the origin of this instability in RR Lyrae stars to a resonance, namely a 9:2 resonance between the fundamental mode and a high‐order (ninth) radial overtone showing strange‐mode characteristics. We discuss the connection of this new type of variation to the mysterious Blazhko effect and argue that it may give us fresh insights into solving this century‐old enigma.</P>
Multisite campaign on the open cluster M67 – I. Observations and photometric reductions

<P>ABSTRACT</P><P>We report on an ambitious multisite campaign aimed at detecting stellar variability, particularly solar-like oscillations, in the red giant stars in the open cluster M67 (NGC 2682). During the six-week observing run, which comprised 164 telescope nights, we used nine 0.6-m to 2.1-m class telescopes located around the world to obtain uninterrupted time series photometry. We outline here the data acquisition and reduction, with emphasis on the optimization of the signal-to-noise ratio of the low-amplitude (50–500 μmag) solar-like oscillations. This includes a new and efficient method for obtaining the linearity profile of the CCD response at ultrahigh precision (∼10 parts per million). The noise in the final time series is 0.50 mmag per minute integration for the best site, while the noise in the Fourier spectrum of all sites combined is 20 μmag. In addition to the red giant stars, this data set proves to be very valuable for studying high-amplitude variable stars such as eclipsing binaries, W UMa systems and δ Scuti stars.</P>
