Characteristics of the Germline <em>MEN1</em> Mutations in Korea: A Literature Review

Purpose: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN-1) is an autosomal dominant disease caused by the <em>MEN1</em> germline mutation. We reviewed previous reports in order to sum-marize the characteristics of germline <em>MEN1</em> mutation in Korea.Methods: We retrieved the relevant literature regarding <em>MEN1</em> germline mutation in Korea using the Pubmed (<a href="http://www.pubmed.org/">http://www.pubmed.org/</a>) and Koreamed (<a href="http://www.koreamed.org/">http://www.koreamed.org/</a>) databases from 2000 to 2012. We evaluated the pedigree of the patients in order to exclude the same, repeated families. We collected all data on the types of mutations and clinical characteristics.Results: There were nine studies with 12 cases of <em>MEN1</em> mutations in Korea. Two cases were sporadic MEN-1. C.196_200dupAGCCC was reported in three families. There were six cases of frameshift mutation, three cases of missense mutation, two cases of nonsense mutation, and one case of splice site mutation. Five mutations were novel mutations not previously reported.Conclusion: We summarized the characteristics of germline <em>MEN1</em> mutations in Korea. Genetic testing of <em>MEN1</em> is rare in Korea; however, it will be useful in preclinical diagnosis and genetic counseling.
하수처리장 적용을 위한Semi-카플란 수차가 장착된 마이크로수력발전 시스템

소수력발전은 하수처리장 에너지 자립을 위한 효과적인 대안이다. 본 연구는 유량변동이 크고 유효낙차가 낮은 중소형하수처리장(기흥레스피아) 적용을 위해 피치조절형 세미카플란(semi-kaplan) 마이크로수력발전의 적용 타당성을 평가하였다. 가변피치 semi-kaplan 수차는 유량조절을 위한 가이드베인은 생략하고 피치조절형 런너를 장착하여 기계적 결함은 줄이면서 유량변동이 큰 처리장에 특화된 기술이다. 마이크로수력발전 시스템은 설계조건(유량 0.35 m3/s, 유효낙차 4.7 m)에서 90.2%의 수차효율 달성이 가능하였고 발전용량은 13.4 kW로 산정되었다. 설비가동률 74%로 가동 시 연간 약 86.8 MWh 에너지 생산을 통해 2.1%의 에너지 자립이 가능하고 이는 연간 49톤의 CO₂ 감축효과와 맞먹는다. 경제성 평가결과 초기 건설공사비가 200,000,000원 이하인 경우에는 내부수익률은 6.1%, 순현가는 15,539,000원, 편익-비용률은 1.08, 투자회수년은 15.5년으로 경제성이 충분한 것으로 나타났다. Small scale hydropower is one of most attractive and cost-effective energy technologies for installation within sewage treatment plants. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of a semi-kaplan micro-hydropower (MHP) system for application to sewage treatment plants with high flow fluctuations and a low head. The semi-kaplan MHP is equipped with an adjustable runner blade, and is without a guide vane, so as to reduce the incidence of mechanical problems. A MHP rating 13.4 kWp with a semi-kaplan turbine has been considered for Kiheung Respia sewage treatment plant, and this installation is estimated to generate 86.8 MWh of electricity annually, which is enough to supply electricity to over 25 households, and equivalent to an annual reduction of 49 ton CO₂. The semi-kaplan turbine showed a 90.2% energy conversion efficiency at the design flow rate of 0.35 m3/s and net head of 4.7 m, and was adaptable to a wide range of flow fluctuations. Through the MHP operation, approximately 2.1% of total electricity demand of Kiheung Respia sewage treatment plant will be achievable. Based on financial analysis, an exploiting MHP is considered economically acceptable with an internal rate of return of 6.1%, net present value of 15,539,000 Korean Won, benefit- cost ratio of 1.08, and payback year of 15.5, respectively, if initial investment cost is 200,000,000 Korean Won.

철골 구조물에서 보의 양단 지지상태는 기둥-보 접합부의 특성 때문에 완전고정도 아니고 그렇다고 이상적인 활절(hinge)도 아니다. 이런 점에서 볼 때 철골 보의 양단은 부분고정 상태로 가정함이 타당하다. 부분고정 정도를 파악하기 위한 연구는 여러 학자들에 의하여 실험적 및 해석적 방법으로 꾸준히 진행해 왔다. 연구의 주 내용은 실험적 내용을 여하히 modeling 하여 구조해석을 수행할 것인 가? 였다. 본 논문에서는 Kinney 및 에 의하여 도입된 부분고정도 ( f<sub>α</sub>) 정의를 보의 응력 및 고유진동수 해석에 응용하기로 한다. Kim의 부분고정도 개념을 고유진동수 해석에 적용하면 하나의 친동수 방정식으로부터 여러 가지 경계조건에 대응하는 고유진동수 산정이 가능하게 된다. 이 방법을 역(逆)으로 이용하면 기(旣) 시공된 보의 고유진동수를 측정하므로서 기둥-보 접합부의 부분 고정도 또는 시공 정도(精度) 판정이 가능하게 된다. 별도의 논문에서 알 수 있듯이 부분고정도를 갖는 보의 응력 해석도 가능함으로 이를 이용하면 불량 사용된 보의 보강대책도 제시할 수 있다.

Objective: Recently scolopendrid aquacupuncture has been a good effect on pain control but it has not been known about clinical safety. So, In order to prove the clinical safety of scolopendrid aquacupuncture, We have observed the physical reac-tion and clinical pathology test after scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment. Methods: We analyzed physical reaction and clinical pathology test before and after Scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment of 30 patients suffering from pain, who admitted department of Acupunture and Moxibustion, College of Oriental Medicine, Won-Kwang University Kwangju hospital. Results & Conclusions: The results were summarized as follows. 1) The distribution of sex was 14 males and 16 females, and the average of patients age was 46.2 years. 2) The distribution of symptom was lumbago, lumbago with radiating pain, nuchal pain and knee joint pain. 3) In the 30 patients treated with Scolopendrid aquacupuncture, hematologic test did not show remarkable change. 4) In the 30 patients treated with Scolopendrid aquacupuncture, Liver function test(AST, ALT, ALP) showed a slight decrease on the contrary, and abnormal rate showed a decrease of 1.0%(from 3.3% to 2.3%) compared with previous study. 5) In the 30 patients treated with Scolopendrid aquacupuncture, Renal function test(BUN, Cr) and abnormal rate(from 2.5% to 2.0%) showed a slight decrease on the contrary. 6) In the 30 patients treated with Scolopendrid aquacupuncture. Electrolyte were normal range before & after treatment. 7) In the results of the Urine analysis of 30 patients, Leukocyte, Protein. Glucose, Keton, Bilirubin, U-bilinogen were not detected before and after Scolopendrid aquacupuncture treatment, and the rest almost made no difference. 8) In the Physical reactions, all of the patients complained of pain of body partially, only one patient showed reddish and itch, but symptoms like those were entirely disappeared within 24 hours and whole body pain, swelling, headache, dizziness, fatigue and nausea was not observed.

<B>Abstract</B><P>In the current study, we identified 2 genetic markers for susceptibility to chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) using a genome-wide analysis. A total of 2744 subjects (671 cases and 2073 controls) were included, with 202 Korean CML patients and 497 control subjects enrolled as a discovery set. Significant findings in the discovery set were validated in a second Korean set of 237 patients and 1000 control subjects and in an additional Canadian cohort of European descent, including 232 patients and 576 control subjects. Analysis revealed significant associations of 2 candidate loci, 6q25.1 and 17p11.1, with CML susceptibility, with the lowest combined P values of 2.4 × 10−6 and 1.3 × 10−12, respectively. Candidate genes in those regions include RMND1, AKAP12, ZBTB2, and WSB1. The locus 6q25.1 was validated in both Korean and European cohorts, whereas 17p11.1 was validated only in the Korean cohort. These findings suggest that genetic variants of 6q25.1 and 17p11.1 may predispose one to the development of CML.</P>

So-Hap-Hyang-Won, a traditional oriental medicine used in the treatment of stroke patients, was examined for its ability to reverse the cell damage caused by lipid peroxidation products and oxidative stress in bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAEC). The effects of herbal medicine on cell proliferation and recovery of oxidative damaged situation were studied in BAEC, which was considered an appropriate in vitro model for stroke resulting from various vascular diseases prevalent in advanced age. In a clinical study of stroke patients, So-Hap-Hyang-Won appeared to improve considerably arm and leg movements as well as consciousness disturbance condition, compared with other traditional medicines used for stroke. When BAEC were treated with extracts of the lyophilized herbal medicines, only that of So-Hap-Hyang-Won stimulated cell proliferation and showed no toxicity even at high concentrations. In studies of BAEC treated with extracts of the lyophilized material of the 14 components of So-Hap-Hyang-Won, only the extract of Foeniculi Fructus stimulated cell growth at all concentrations tested. Moreover, when cells were treated with Foeniculi Fructus (10 and 100 mg/ml) extract after prior exposure to t-BHP ($l0\mu\textrm{M}$) or HNE ($0.2\mu\textrm{M}$), lipid peroxidation products which are known to be involved in aging and vascular diseases, or after the exposure to SIN-l ($500\mu\textrm{M}$), which generates nitric oxide (NO) and other reactive oxygen species, there was substantial recovery from the oxidative damage, presumably due to the radical-scavenging effect of Foeniculi Fructus extract. Foeniculi Fructus not only showed stimulatory effects on cell growth and cell damage repair in BAEC, but also appeared to show the most anti-aging activity among all the herbal components of So-Hap-Hyang-Won.

Many aspects of epigenetic phenomena have been elucidated via studies of transposable elements. An active transposable element frequently loses its ability to mobilize and goes into an inactive state during development. In this study, we describe the cyclic activity of a maize transposable element dissociation (Ds) in rice. in rice genome, Ds undergoes the spontaneous loss of mobility. However, and inactive state of Ds can be Changed into an active state during tissue culture. The recovery of mobility accompanies not only changes in the methylation patterns of the terminal region of Ds, but also alteration in the steady state level of the activator (Ac) mRNA that is expressed by a constitutive CaMV 35S promoter, Furthermore, the Ds-reactivation process is not random, but stage-specific during plantlet regeneration. Our findings have expanded previous observation on Ac reactivation in the tissue Culture of maize.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The synthesis of a novel polymeric surfactant with a repeating disulfide-based gemini structure (poly(gemini surfactant)) and its micellar properties for GSH-dependent intracellular drug delivery are described. A linear polyethylene glycol (PEG) was end-functionalized with <I>N</I>-stearoylcysteine and the cysteine thiol groups of the telechelic surfactant were oxidized intermolecularly in the micellar state to produce poly(gemini surfactant). Compared with the telechelic surfactant, poly(gemini surfactant) possessed a lower critical micelle concentration and higher solubilization capacity for doxorubicin (DOX). Moreover, the poly(gemini surfactant) micelles revealed excellent colloidal stability against excess sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as a micelle-destabilizing agent. Cytotoxicity experiments showed that poly(gemini surfactant) composed of PEG, cysteine, and stearic acid was virtually non-cytotoxic up to 100 mg L<SUP>−1</SUP>. In the presence of glutathione (GSH), poly(gemini surfactant) was degraded back into the telechelic surfactant, leading to the release of encapsulated DOX to induce cytotoxicity against cancer cells.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A novel polymeric surfactant with a repeating disulfide-based gemini structure is synthesized. </LI> <LI> The poly(gemini surfactant) exhibits a low CMC, improved solubilization capacity, and excellent micelle stability. </LI> <LI> The GSH-triggered DOX release from the micelles is demonstrated in KB cells. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
