As part of perfluorocarbon (PFC) tracer release experiment conducted at the western coastal area of Korea in February 2001, the background concentration level of perfluorocarbons (PFCs) in the atmosphere was determined by gas chromatography with electron capture detector. Prior to the PFC tracer release experiment in the field, air samples were collected using active samplers and the background concentrations of PFCs were determined. The concentrations of perfluoromethylcyclohexane ($C_7F_{14}$, PMCH) in the western coastal area of Korea were in the range of 5.8-8.7 fL/L. The mean concentration of the PMCH in the region exhibited no significant spatial and temporal variations. This concentration level is somewhat higher and has larger standard deviation than those of studies previously conducted in USA and Europe on the background concentration levels of PFCs. Because the background concentration of PMCH in Korea is still very low and consistent temporally and spatially, the PMCH tracer can be used suitably for the studies of long-range atmospheric transport.

Injectable RGD-bioconjugated Mussel Adhesive Proteins (RGD-MAPs) composite hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) hydrogels provide local periodontal tissue for bone filling in periodontal surgery. Previously we developed a novel type of injectable self-supported hydrogel (2 mg/ml of RGD-MAPs/HPMC) based porcine nano hydroxyapatite (MPH) for dental graft, which could good handling property, biodegradation or biocompatibility with the hydrogel disassembly and provided efficient cell adhesion activity and no inflammatory responses. Herein, the aim of this work was to evaluate bone formation following implantation of MPH and collagen membrane in rabbit calvarial defects. Eight male New Zealand rabbits were used and four circular calvarial defects were created on each animal. Defects were filled with different graft materials: 1) collagen membrane, 2) collagen membrane with MPH, 3) collagen membrane with bovine bone hydroxyapatite (BBH), and 4) control. The animals were sacrificed after 2 and 8 weeks of healing periods for histologic analysis. Both sites receiving MPH and BBH showed statistically increased augmented volume and new bone formation (p < 0.05). However, there was no statistical difference in new bone formation between the MPH, BBH and collagen membrane group at all healing periods. Within the limits of this study, collagen membrane with MPH was an effective material for bone formation and space maintaining in rabbit calvarial defects.
Nanogenerator-induced synaptic plasticity and metaplasticity of bio-realistic artificial synapses

<P>A bio-realistic artificial synapse integrated with a nanogenerator (NG), which can be used in neuromorphic systems, is demonstrated for self-powered biomedical devices in this study. Biocompatible amorphous (Na0.5K0.5)NbO3 (NKN) films are grown on TiN/polyimide substrates to synthesize NKN memristors for use as artificial synapses. Various synaptic functions are realized in NKN memristors, which are driven by a pulse generator and an NG. The synaptic plasticity of the NKN memristor results from the oxygen vacancy movements and the changes in the shape of the oxygen vacancy filaments. As a further step toward developing more bio-realistic artificial synapses, various types of metaplasticity and their mechanisms in the NKN memristors are investigated. Moreover, the metaplasticity of spike-timing-dependent plasticity (a key characteristic of biological synapses) is realized in the NKN memristor with a priming stimulus given by the NKN NG.</P>

Bulky traditional transformer can be replaced with solid-state-transformer (SST) thanks to fast-switching power semiconductors, such as silicon carbide FET and diode. SST implemented using LLC resonant converter can improve power efciency and minimize its highfrequency transformer. However, high isolation voltage between primary and secondary sides makes output voltage sensing much more difcult. Even though output can be monitored on secondary side, it must be also estimated for fast protection on primary side. In this paper, very accurate estimation scheme for output voltage on primary side is proposed and verifed by simulation
