<P>Recent research and development has been incredibly successful at advancing the capabilities for vacuum electronic device (VED) sources of powerful terahertz (THz) and near-THz coherent radiation, both CW or average and pulsed. Currently, the VED source portfolio covers over 12 orders of magnitude in power (mW-to-GW) and two orders of magnitude in frequency (from <; 0.1 to >; 10 THz). Further advances are still possible and anticipated. They will be enabled by improved understanding of fundamental beam-wave interactions, electromagnetic mode competition and mode control, along with research and development of new materials, fabrication methods, cathodes, electron beam alignment and focusing, magnet technologies, THz metrology and advanced, broadband output radiation coupling techniques.</P>
Strengthening Metabolic Bypasses for Enhanced Isopropanol Production in Corynebacterium glutamicum

IPA (Isopropanol) is a secondary alcohol mainly used in pharmaceuticals, bioenergy and chemical products, and is a promising ingredient as a bio-substitute for petroleum. In this study, we constructed Corynebacterium glutamicum to produce IPA by introducing the IPA biosynthetic pathway, but the production yield was low. Thus, we strengthened the ketone body production pathway in C. glutamicum. Isoprenoid bypass was integrated to push the flux towards IPA, which did not show the expected increase. Therefore, to enhance ketone body production, a dual pathway including a classical and bypass pathway, was introduced instead. We controlled gene expression and flux through the construction of strong synthetic promoters. This is the first study using this pathway to efficiently produce IPA in C. glutamicum. We also introduced and screened each of four different secondary alcohol dehydrogenase genes from different bacterial origins to pull out IPA production. Consequently, this indicates that strengthening the ketone body biosynthetic pathway via the integration of classical and bypass pathways and synthetic promoters is metabolically effective in enhancing IPA production.

Framed steel structures frequently have bolted connections to ensure semi-rigid joints that have a significant amount of energy dissipation incorporated in them, to avoid failure of connections and members under cyclic loading, such as wind and earthquake loading. One problem is that due to cyclic action, these bolts may loosen, and compromise subsequent behavior of the structure. A vibration-based health monitoring technique for quantification of the level of loosening of bolted joints in a steel plane frame structure is presented here, to provide a basis for evaluation of the structure state. A numerical model of a plane frame is considered with rotational springs representing semi-rigid joints. A fixity factor is defined in terms of rotational spring stiffness and is considered as a measure of level of loosening of bolts with zero representing fully loose and one representing fully tight condition. Experimental strain time histories are collected and transformed into frequency domain using Fourier transform. A shape co-relation is defined using frequency data obtained from the damaged and the undamaged structures. Using the frequency spectra and shape correlation, an objective function (OF) is developed and minimized by the particle swarm optimization to estimate the fixity factor. It is found that the technique estimates higher value of reduction of the fixity factor in the damaged location, but shows some considerable value at the other springs also. Therefore, the technique is improved using heuristics by identifying probable damage locations prior to applying model updation, in order to estimate the damage severity more accurately. Considering fixity factors at the identified locations as variables, model updating is done for estimation of fixity factors. The improved results clearly indicate actual damage locations and fixity factors for different levels of bolt loosening, and is found satisfactory for possible future application of the technique to multistory framed structures.

Based on the scenario assumed that the CFO (carrier frequency offset), which is caused by the ICI (inter-carrier interference), exists in the environments of short-term fading, a multi-dimension combining (M-D combining) receiver for an MC-CDMA (multi-carrier coded-division multiple-access) system is designed and proposed considerably to overcome the system performance degradation. It is worthwhile claiming that is not only the fading parameter of the correlated-fading model dominates the system performance of an MC-CDMA system, but the number of antenna with the M-D combining receiver also definitely affects the system performance.

Rising urban flood patterns are a universal phenomenon and a significant challenge for city government and urban planners worldwide. Urban flood problems range from relatively localized incidents to substantial incidents, which lead to cities being flooded for a few hours to several days. Therefore, the effect may be widespread, such as the temporary displacement of individuals, disruption to civic facilities, water quality degradation and the possibility of epidemics. The problems raised by urban flooding are highly challengeable and compound by ongoing climate change, with adverse implications for changes in rainfall and gaps in intra-urban rainfall distribution. Unplanned construction and invasions of large houses along rivers and watercourses have interfered in natural rivers and watercourses. As a result, the runoff has risen in proportion to the urbanization of the urban floods. The location of the relief camp and the priority for evacuation were determined, and the safest route to avoid floods were established. This method can be used for emergency planning in future flood incidents, and it will help plan disaster preparedness for Panchayat. This study will promote the flood plain's potential use for disaster management and land use planning virtually.
A Cross-Cultural Comparison of Fears in Turkish, South Korean, and American Students

Fears of children from Turkey, South Korea, and the United States were compared for the first time using translated versions of the American Fear Survey Schedule (FSSC-AM; Burnham, 2005). Although several versions of the Fear Survey Schedule for Children (FSSC; Scherer & Nakamura, 1968) have been used since it was introduced, no published studies have reported the fears of South Korean children, and only a limited number of Turkish studies have used the FSSC (Serim, 2010; Serim-Yıldız & Erdur-Baker, 2013; Serim-Yıldız, Erdur-Baker, & Bugay, 2013). This exploratory study presents data from middle and high school students from two countries rarely studied in the fear literature. Fears of school-aged children in Asia and Eurasia are presented and compared to an American sample. The sample included 637 middle and high school students, and significant differences were found across age, gender, and country, and in most common fears. Implications for counseling and future research will be discussed.
Another View Point on the Performance Evaluation of an MC-DS-CDMA System

The results of performance analysis by adopting the channel scenarios characterized asWeibull fading for an multicarrierdirect sequence-coded division multiple access (MC-DS-CDMA) system are proposed in this investigation. On the other hand, an approximate simple expression with the criterion of bit error rate (BER) versus signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) method is derived for an MC-DS-CDMA system combining with maximal ratio combining (MRC) diversity based on the moment generating function (MGF) formula of Weibull statistics, and it associates with an alternative expression of GaussianQ-function. Besides, the other point of view on the BER performance evaluation of an MC-DS-CDMA system is not only the assumption of both single-user and multi-user cases applied, but the phenomena of partial band interference (PBI) is also included. Moreover, in order to validate the accuracy in the derived formulas, some of the system parameters, such as Weibull fading parameter (β), user number (K), spreading chip number (N), branch number (L), and the PBI (JSR) values, etc., are compared with each other in the numerical results. To the best of author’s knowledge, it is a brand new idea which proposes the evaluation of the system performance for an MC-DS-CDMA system over the point of view withWeibull fading channel.
A Data Fusion Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks

The scenario deployed with mobile sensors for tracking both of non-maneuvering and maneuvering targets traveling in the phenomena exploits with mobile WSN (wireless sensor networks) is simulated in this paper. In order to solve the complicated situation and reduce computation burden because of the multiple sensing event exists mobile WSN environments is proposed. Moreover, a variable structure model is established as an adaptive maneuvering compensator to solve both data association and sensor maneuvering problems simultaneously, that is, the detection algorithm for multi-mobile sensor tracking in WSN investigated too. The simulations of multi-mobile sensor tracking based on the proposed method are conducted for tracking the targets. Computer simulation results indicate that the approach successfully tracks multiple sensors and has good precision also.
