This study was aimed at determining the rational forest road networks in mountainous terrain forests by using the developed computer model. The computer model used for this study is composed of two major subroutines for digital terrain analysis and road-route selection, and the road-route selection subroutine uses the area-partitioning method in order to fully investigate alternative roading routes and to determine the layout of forest roads. The developed computer model was applied to designing a road network for the Research Forest of Seoul National University. The forest having an area of about 11,000 hectares is located in Mt. Baekwoon region of Kwangyang-gun and Gurye-gun in Chulanam-do. To evaluate the optimality of the determined road networks in this study, such factors as the average skidding distance, accessibility to forest stands, development index and circulated road network index were measured. The results of the optimality analysis of the road network is good and practicable.

To investigate the influence of some factors related with road structures and site characteristics on side-ditch erosion of the forest road, four forest roads elapsed from one to four years after construction were selected and surveying points were set up at intervals of 20m from beginning of each side-ditch of each road. Data consisting of 13 factors related with road structures and site characteristics on side-ditch erosion were collected from each surveying point and analysed by correlation and multiple regression method. The major results obtained from this study are summarized as follows; 1. Averages of side-ditch erosion in each forest road were 12.6m/㎞ at the forest road constructed in 1987, 31.6m/㎞ at that in 1986, 30.2m/㎞ at that in 1985, and 39.6m/㎞ at that in 1984. 2. The data analysis of each road showed that the distance from beginning of side-ditch and longitudinal gradient of side-ditch were highly correlated with side-ditch erosion. 3. With increasing time after construction, side-ditch erosion tended to increase. 4. According to the integrated analysis of 375 surveying points, the distance from beginning of side-ditch, longitudinal gradient of side-ditch, and years after construction were significant to explain the variance in order of their relative contribution in side-ditch erosion. 5. By the estimation of discrimination ability, erosional condition on the basis of allowable quantity in side-ditch erosion was classified.

Pseudomembranous colitis, caused by altering the normal colonic flora and allowing the multiplication of Clostridium difficile, is an deleterious adverse effect of antibiotics. But it is rarely reported by rifampicin. Rifampicin is one of the first line drug in the treatment of tuberculosis and many patients are exposed to its potential adverse effects. We experienced a patient that had abdominal discomfort and hematochezia due to pseudomembranous colitis after receiving antituberculous medication, and which was probably caused by rifampicin. A 82 years old man was admitted with abdominal discomfort and hematochezia for one week. On the past history he had been diagnosed as endobronchial tuberculosis about 4 months ago. Colonoscopy revealed multiple discrete whitish mucosal lesion on rectosigmoid colon, and histologic findings were consistent with pseudomembranous colitis. The antituberculous agents were discontinued and vancomycin was administered. The patient's symptoms were resolved within several days. There was no recurrence after reinstitution of the antituberculous agents excluding rifampicin. We report here on a case of pseudomembranous colitis probably due to rifampicin.

Objective : The aim of this study was to review systemically clinical trials on the effectiveness and safety of herbal medicines in the treatment of osteoarthritis. Methods : Computerized literature searches were carried out on seven electronic databases, and hand-searching on some chinese medical journals in library of Kyung Hee Medical Center. Trial data were extracted in a standardized, predefined manner and assessed independently. Results : 1. Thirty reports of clinical trials and two reports of meta-analyses concerning herbal medicine were collected and reviewed Among these reports three medical herbs were applied as topical medicine and others as internal medicine. 2. The western studies established NSAIDs or placebo as their control group. Five chinese reports established formulated herb pill(Ruanshnagshenjin pill) as their control group and Six did not establish a control group at all. 3. ACR was the most highly used diagnostic criteria in the western studies while the Chinese used their official criteria established by their government or the criteria of their text books. 4. 20 reports chose the Lequesne functional index, SHAQ, WOMAC OA index, AIMS, and their own unique scoring system as the criteria of analysing the effect. Others chose clinical symptoms, articular functions, and lab finding as their criteria. 5. 7 single herbs and 19 formulated herbs were studied. Among the formulated herbs, Achyranthes japonica was studied in 10 of the studies and Angelica gigantis Radix in 8, making them the most often studied herbs among the studies.

Indicators of environmental conditions qualitatively and quantitatively describe the state of the environment and natural resources, and the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) has initiated and suggested AEIs (Agri-Environmental Indicators) to assess trends over time of the effects of agriculture on the environment and the effectiveness and efficiency of agricultural and environmental policy measures since 1990's. This study aims to develop the state indicators of water quality for agricultural water, surface and groundwater, to evaluate the environmental impacts of agricultural activities and policies by qualifying the environmental levels of a nation. Status indicators were calculated according to the agricultural water quality standards of OECD and Korea, and their trends were analyzed over time. Particularly, nitrate ($NO_3{^-}$) status indicators of ground water in 2013 were significantly lower than the ones in 2000. Overall, the water quality indicators of surface water in 2013 were higher than the ones in 2012, except for pH and DO. The groundwater quality indicators in 2013 were lower than those of previous years. The optimal management indicators were calculated to assess agricultural surface water and groundwater quality. The findings of this study indicated that the state indicators could play a significant role to establish policies and procedures for managing and conserving water resources. This study also discussed water pollution caused by agricultural and industrial effluents.

In order to develop a biocontrol agent that can effectively control Fusarium wilt on Cymbidium genus, the effectiveness of antagonistic microbes against the cause pathogen was screened. The selected microbe showed a broad spectrum of antifungal activity, and the culture broth of this microbe had better preventive effect on Fusarium wilt than the commercial chemical agent in the pot assay. This isolated strain, GBA-12, was identified as Streptomyces kasugaensis, and the antifungal substance was purified from a broth culture of GBA-12. This purified substance was identified as a polyene macrolide (YS-822A) that was newly discovered from Streptomyces kasugaensis, and it exhibited antifungal activity against several phytopathogenic fungi.
