The objective of this study is to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of a vertical axis wind turbine blade as the basic study of a design of a vertical axis wind turbine. The lift and drag coefficients of the various shape of the vortical axis wind turbine blades are analyzed and compared using the CFD code Fluent. To validate the numerical analysis, the predicted results of the Fluent are compared with those of the Xfoil code and the experimental results. We conclude that the program Fluent can be used to predict the aerodynamics of the wind turbine blade. By comparing the predicted results of the aerodynamic characteristics of the different shape of the blades, an appropriate shape of the blade is suggested to design the vortical axis wind turbine blade.
피혁산업 바이오매스에서 생산된 바이오차의 물리화학적 특성 및 중금속 흡착 특성

피혁산업에서는 공정특성에 따라 shaving scrap, pelt scrap, buffing dust 등의 고형폐기물이 상당량 발생되고 있는데 이들의 재할용 및 고부가치물질로의 전환은 매우 주목을 받고 있다. 본 연구에서는 가죽 생산 공정 중 원피 무게의 50% 이상 고형폐기물로 발생하는 pelt scrap 콜라겐 단백질의섬유 기재에 미모사 및 채스트넛 식물성 탄닌으로 고정화하는 방법(Immobilization)을 적용하여 배위결합이 가능한 작용기를 도입한 바이오 흡착제를 바이오매스 사용하여 바이오차를 제조하였으며, 제조한 바이오차의 특성 분석을 위해 FT-IR, 비표면적 및 기공크기분포 분석을 실시하였다. 최적 제조조건에서 제조한 바이오차를 이용하여 반응용액의 pH, 반응온도, 흡착질/흡착제 비 변화에 따른 여러회분식 실험을 실시하였다. 이들에 대하여 중금속 제거용 흡착제로서의 재활용성을 평가하기 위하여양이온성의 중금속인 Cu(II) 이온을 함유한 인공폐수를 사용하여 다양한 반응조건에서의 회분식 실험을 실시하여 중금속들의 흡착특성 연구를 진행하였다.
성인 천식 환자들에서 Cytokeratin 18 단백에 대한 IgG 자가항체와 천식의 임상적 중증도 간의 연관성

Background: Cytokeratin 18 (CK18) protein was identified as an airway epithelial cell antigen associated with nonallergic asthma. Objective: We evaluated an association between IgG autoantibodies to CK18 protein and clinical severity of asthma in this study. Method: Severe asthma was defined as when patients had experienced at least one severe asthmatic exacerbation requiring an emergency room visit or admission in the last year despite continuous typical therapies. Moderate asthma was defined as when patients had been controlled by typical therapies without severe asthmatic exacerbation in the last year. Mild asthma was defined as when patients experienced intermittent asthmatic symptoms and did not need continuous anti-asthmatic treatments in the last year. IgG autoantibodies to CK18 protein were detected in serum samples by immunoblot analysis Result: IgG autoantibodies to CK18 protein were detected in 48 of 161 asthmatic patients (29.8%) and 5 of 58 healthy controls (8.6%) (P=0.002). IgG autoantibodies to CK18 protein were detected in 1 of 20 patients with mild asthma (5.0%), 22 of 63 patients with moderate asthma (34.9%), and 25 of 78 patients with severe asthma (32.1%)(P<0.001). Conclusion: These findings suggest that IgG autoantibodies to CK18 protein could be a biological marker for moderate-to-severe asthma requiring continuous medical treatment. Literacy Practices in the Language Minority Homes and School of Korean Children in the USA

The pilot case study explored how language minority families and their mainstream preschool teacher supported their language minority children, in order to determine ways to enhance the home and school literacy connection. Participants in the study included two Korean families who had children enrolled in a Head Start program with their American teacher. The multiple methods of data collection included a survey, interviews and video recording of classroom and home literacy practices. Findings revealed that although parents and teachers provided good support to their children, their literacy support was rather isolated and disconnected. Via the lens of funds of knowledge, the underlying issue of the disconnected home-school literacy support was related to the inactivation of students’ home language and culture, as a resource for L2 literacy learning. Lastly, this study suggested some ways to enhance the bridge between language minority homes and classrooms, including the practice of classroom book reading at home and sharing video clips of literacy activities at home and school.

Design procedure for a counterflow-type cooling tower was set up using conventional Merkel theory. The design data could be. different depending on the characteristic curve selected by the engineer. It reveals that the consistent and reasonable criteria are required based on the exact information of the cooling tower performance. In this study, an off-design performance analysis program .for a counterflow-type cooling tower was developed and verified by comparing with experimental data. Also, the effect of various operating conditions on the off-design performance of a cooling tower was analyzed.

Since the heat generation in a chip increases as the components are miniaturized and the computing speed becomes faster, suitable heat dissipation has become one of the primary limiting factors to ensure the reliable operation of the electronic devices. A pin-fin array could be used as an alterative cooling system of the electronic equipment. In this study, convective heat transfer through the pin-fin array is analyzed experimentally based on porous medium approach. The influence of the structure of the pin-fin array including the pin-fin spacing, the pin diameter and plate length on heat transfer characteristics is investigated and compared with the previous analytical results and existing correlation equations. Nowadays, electronic and mechanical devices become smaller and smaller. In this sense, the main purpose of this study is to decide the optimum pin-fin arrangement to get similar heat transfer performance when the length of the existing cooling system is reduced as a half.

This study is aimed to identify the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics of high-porosity metal foams in a horizontal heated channel. Experiment is performed with various heat flux, velocity and pore density conditions. High pore density with same porosity case shows higher pressure loss due to the increase of surface area per unit volume. The fiction factor decreases rapidly with increase of Reynolds number in Darcy flow region. However, it converges to a constant value of the Ergun coefficient in Non-Darcy flow region. Nusselt number decreases with higher pore density.
