DISCOVERY OF A FAINT QUASAR AT <i>z</i> ∼ 6 AND IMPLICATIONS FOR COSMIC REIONIZATION

<P>Recent studies suggest that faint active galactic nuclei may be responsible for the reionization of the universe. Confirmation of this scenario requires spectroscopic identification of faint quasars (M-1450 > -24 mag) at z greater than or similar to 6, but only a very small number of such quasars have been spectroscopically identified so far. Here, we report the discovery of a faint quasar IMS J220417.92+011144.8 at z similar to 6 in a 12.5 deg(2) region of the SA22 field of the Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS). The spectrum of the quasar shows a sharp break at similar to 8443 angstrom, with emission lines redshifted to z = 5.944 +/- 0.002 and rest-frame ultraviolet continuum magnitude M-1450 = -23.59 +/- 0.10 AB mag. The discovery of IMS J220417.92+011144.8 is consistent with the expected number of quasars at z similar to 6 estimated from quasar luminosity functions based on previous observations of spectroscopically identified low-luminosity quasars. This suggests that the number of M-1450 similar to 23 mag quasars at z similar to 6 may not be high enough to fully account for the reionization of the universe. In addition, our study demonstrates that faint quasars in the early universe can be identified effectively with a moderately wide and deep near-infrared survey such as the IMS.</P>

We investigated that the effects of residential type on energy balance in college students. Total sixteen college students were participated in this study, all subjects were assigned one of three groups: either school attendee students group, self-governed living students group, dormitory students group. Routine physical activity level (for 5 days including three weekday and two weekend) and food intake were surveyed. For investigation of degree of physical activity, all subjects were requested to record on their physical movements as possible as detail should be obtained. To all subjects, five-day dietary log form was given, and used for examining of calorie intake from their routine diet. There was no statistical difference in energy intake and consumption in each. However energy consumption was significantly higher than energy uptake in school attendee students group. All other groups were shown a similar energy values between energy uptake and consumption. There were no significant differences in energy intake and consumption in any of experimental groups when comparisons were made between weekdays and weekend. As far as energy uptake was concerned it was no statistical difference in any of major nutrients among groups. In conclusion, partial imbalance was found between energy intake and uptake in school attendee groups. This may be due to their more active life style than other groups'. In future studies, better controlled study should be performed not only more subjects are recruited but also minor nutrients are included for examining of energy balance.

By analyzing adaptive behaviors of project-based organizations in Korean film making industry during 1961-1980, this study attempted to empirically examine the concept of `organizational capability`. The concept of organizational capability suggests that an organization`s capability of effectively utilizing others` as well as its own resources may be more critical than its mere possession of precious resources. Contingency theory suggests that organizations pursue efficiency in relatively stable and predictable environment, while pursue innovation and adaptation in dynamic and uncertain environment. Based on these extant theories, we propose that an organization’s usage pattern of critical resources could partly reflect its organizational capability, especially for the case of project-based organizations like film makers. More specifically. it is proposed that Korean film making firms most of which are project-based would show different patterns of utilizing two critical outside resources, actors and directors, in 1960s and 1970s. It is hypothesized that Korean film makers tend to employ same actors and directors more repeatedly in 1960s than in 1970s because 1960s had relatively more stable environments than 1970s. Empirical results support hypothesized relationships and the operationally defined concept of organizational capability for project-based organization.

P-ANCA small vessel vasculitis is multisystemic disease, especially frequently involving the kidney. Diagnosis is delayed because it`s non-specific clinical manifestation. Recently ANCA becomes available tools for diagnosis of vasculitis. Infection and gastrointestinal complications are relatively common in vasculitis. But spontaneous rupture of gastrointestinal artery is a rare complication. A 61-year-old housewife was admitted due to poor oral intake, weight loss and microscopic hematuria. Renal biopsy showed an extensive necrotizing glomerulonephritis, consistent with Wegener`s granulomatosis or microscopic polyangitis. Serum test showed positive for P-ANCA. Despite steroid therapy, she expired due to spontaneous rupture of right gastroepiploic artery.

The material characterization of single crystalline Cu columns was numerically carried out at the submicroscopic level. A molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was employed using the embedded-atom method (EAM) interatomic potential between a pair of Cu atoms to describe the interactions among Cu atoms. First, the relationship between mechanical properties and factors affecting their behavior were numerically investigated using a crystal structure including several defects. The factors were specimen size, strain rate, and temperature. As the specimen size increased the normalized yield stress decreased, which was similar to results obtained at other length-scale. The yield stress tended to lead to exponential strain rate-hardening and a linear temperature-softening. Next, material characterization was conducted based on these results. These computational results can lead to the development of an in silico platform to characterize material properties and MD simulation can lay the groundwork for multi-scale modeling and simulation. 영상 기반의 하천 친수시설 추출을 위한 선형 평활화 알고리즘 특성 연구

친수지구는 주민들의 친수활동을 위한 공간을 계획적으로 관리하기 위하여 지정한 곳을 의미하며, 하천 친수공원의 효율적인 관리를 위해서는 친수시설의 GIS 자료 및 DB구축의 자동화 작업이 필요하다. 이에 대한 대안으로 드론영상이나 항공영상을 활용한 객체기반 분류 방법이 국토의 3차원 공간정보를 획득할 수 있는 효율적 수단으로 주목받고 있다. 추출된 윤곽선에 포함된 잡영을 제거하기 위해서는 윤곽선의 선형 평활화 작업이 필요하며 수동으로 적용하기에는 많은 어려움이 따르므로 이를 극복하기 위한 여러가지 자동화 방법들이 개발되었고, 그 중 현재까지 가장 널리 연구되고 활용되어지고 있는 방법은 선형 평활화 방법이라고 할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 친수시설의 기하학적 형상에 대하여 선형 평활화 알고리즘인 Douglas-Peucker, Visvalingam-Whyatt, Bend-simplify 알고리즘에 대한 적합성을 판단하였다. Object-based classification using drone images or aerial images is attracting attention as an efficient means to acquire 3D spatial information in the country. To remove the miscellaneous image included in the extracted outline, a linear simplification of the outline is required, and it is difficult to apply manually, so various automation methods have been developed to overcome this, and among them, the most widely studied and utilized is the linear simplification method. In this study, the suitability of linear simplification algorithms such as Douglas-Peucker, Visvalingam-Whyatt, and Bend-simplify algorithms for the geometric shape of hydrophilic facilities was determined.
