Diagnostic analysis of US fashion brand’s Bangladeshi outsourcing
H. M. Rakib Ul Hasan,Mijeong Noh,Adah Ward Randolph 한국마케팅과학회 2022 마케팅과학연구 Vol.32 No.2
The purpose of this paper is to examine Bangladesh’s performance as an outsourcing destination from the perspectives of buyers and suppliers involved in a representative US apparel company which has outsourced from Bangladesh. This study employed a sequential mixed method research design which consisted of quantitative evaluation and qualitative interviews. The sample was comprised of three buyers and three suppliers in the Phillip’s Van-Heusen (PVH). From the results of quantitative evaluation, it was found that Bangladesh has a greater advantage in the cost and quality clusters than Vietnam. The interviews revealed that the US buyers have some concerns in geographic location, trade restrictions, country’s political situation, warranty policies, and currency exchange situations. To strengthen Bangladeshi capability, Bangladeshi government’s investment to improve facilities, nomination of supplier’s backward linkage, improvement of manufacturing capacity, running improvement programs, negotiation to reduce tariff, and building mutual trust between buyers and suppliers were suggested. These diagnosis results provide the US buyers and the Bangladeshi suppliers with not only valuable information on the current status of Bangladesh’s performance but guidance to successful strategies for improvement of outsourcing performance.
Graded Category Structure in Chinese-English Bilinguals
Thomas B. Ward,Yuliya Kolomyts,Amy H. Chu,Jyotsna Vaid,Roberto R. Heredia 대한사고개발학회 2009 The International Journal of Creativity & Problem Vol.19 No.2
This study examined the extent to which Chinese-English bilinguals’ representations of common categories are similar or different in each of their languages. More specifically, it examined variations in a particular aspect of graded structure: the extent to which exemplars are differentially accessible from corresponding category labels in two languages. Archival category listing data were used to compare bilingual participants who responded in Chinese versus English to different groups of monolinguals who responded only in English. There was substantial overlap in the category exemplars listed across the bilinguals’ languages, but less overlap than for monolingual responses in the same language. The results indicate differences in graded structure of the categories across bilingual participants’ languages. Implications for cognitive processing in general and creative idea generation in particular are discussed.

The vast majority of combat-related penetrating spinal injuries from gunshot wounds result in severe or complete neurological deficit. Treatment is based on neurological status, the presence of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistulas, and local effects of any retained fragment(s). We present a case of a 46-year-old male who sustained a spinal gunshot injury from a 7.62‑mm AK-47 round that became lodged within the subarachnoid space at T9–T10. He immediately suffered complete motor and sensory loss. By 24–48 hours postinjury, he had recovered lower extremity motor function fully but continued to have severe sensory loss (posterior cord syndrome). On post-injury day 2, he was evacuated from the combat theater and underwent a T9 laminectomy, extraction of the bullet, and dural laceration repair. At surgery, the traumatic durotomy was widened and the bullet, which was laying on the dorsal surface of the spinal cord, was removed. The dura was closed in a water-tight fashion and fibrin glue was applied. Postoperatively, the patient made a significant but incomplete neurological recovery. His stocking-pattern numbness and sub-umbilical searing dysthesia improved. The spinal canal was clear of the foreign body and he had no persistent CSF leak. Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging of the spine revealed contusion of the spinal cord at the T9 level. Early removal of an intra-canicular bullet in the setting of an incomplete spinal cord injury can lead to significant neurological recovery following even high-velocity and/or high-caliber gunshot wounds. However, this case does not speak to, and prior experience does not demonstrate, significant neurological benefit in the setting of a complete injury.
Logarithmic singularities and quantum oscillations in magnetically doped topological insulators
Nandi, D.,Sodemann, Inti,Shain, K.,Lee, G. H.,Huang, K.-F.,Chang, Cui-Zu,Ou, Yunbo,Lee, S. P.,Ward, J.,Moodera, J. S.,Kim, P.,Yacoby, A. American Physical Society 2018 Physical Review B Vol.97 No.8

We report magnetotransport measurements on magnetically doped (Bi, Sb)(2)Te-3 films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. In Hall bar devices, we observe logarithmic dependence of transport coefficients in temperature and bias voltage which can be understood to arise from electron-electron interaction corrections to the conductivity and self-heating. Submicron scale devices exhibit intriguing quantum oscillations at high magnetic fields with dependence on bias voltage. The observed quantum oscillations can be attributed to bulk and surface transport.
