A poor supply of oxygen and glucose to the brain can cause severe brain damage. Therefore, neuroprotective drugs against ischemia need to be developed. In this study, wogonin, a flavone found in Scutellaria baicalensis, had a protective effect on neuronal cells damaged by oxygen and glucose deprivation in rat hippocampal slices in culture. In particular, the protective effect on the pyramidal cell layer was significant. On the basis of these experimental results, wogonin may be a therapeutic agent for treating ischemia in patients.

In this study, we determined the glycemic index (GI) of an herbal preparation (Insu 100®; Korean red ginseng, carob, mulberry, and banaba). Ten subjects (men and women) took part in standard glycemic testing during a 4-week study period (with duplicate trials of each treatment). Informed consent was obtained from each subject. No adverse effects resulted from the administration of the herbal preparation. The GI of Insu 100® was 19.5±5.1, indicating that administration of this herbal cocktail may be beneficial to people with metabolic disorders and to those who wish to maintain their overall health. This study complied with the Declaration of Helsinki.

Serratia marcescens causes various diseases. Skin ulcer is one of S. marcescens related diseases, but it is rare clinical syndrome. We experienced a case of skin ulcer caused by S. marcescens in a woman with alcohol induced cirrhosis. After exposure to fresh water while trimming the codfish, she developed deep ulcer on her right hand and bacteremia by S. marcescens. S. marcescens should be considered as a specific etiology of skin infection presenting after fresh water exposure.

This study examined the neuroprotective effect of scopoletin from Angelica dahurica against oxygen and glucose deprivation-induced neurotoxicity in a rat organotypic hippocampal slice culture. Scopoletin reduced the propidium iodide (PI) uptake, which is an indication of impaired cell membrane integrity. In addition, it inhibited the loss of NeuN, which represents the viability of neuronal cells. The results suggests that scopoletin from A. dahurica protects neuronal cells from the damage caused by oxygen and glucose deprivation.

This simulation study aims to differentiate between contrast media and calcification in blood vessel using the effective atomic number (EAN) extraction method in electromagnetic X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging. Calibration was performed on six tissue-equivalent materials, three contrast medium, and one calcium solution. The Hounsfield unit (HU) values at 80 kV and 140 ㎸ with electromagnetic spectrum using dualenergy computed tomography (DECT) facilitated this calibration. EAN from the polynomial method was then compared with that from the Stoichiometric method. In 120 ㎸ vascular imaging, when the HU of calcium and iodine contrast media were alike, EAN provided a more pronounced contrast than HU. The iodine contrast agent’s enhancement in EAN was approximately 30.0 %, and in HU, it was 13.0 % relative to calcium. This indicates EAN’s potential to better differentiate contrast media from calcification in clinical contexts.

Meningococcal infection is a life threatening disease that leaves serious sequelae in spite of appropriate treatment, thus vaccination for high risk groups are Important for the prevention of meningococcal diseases. However, the vaccine for Neisseria meningitidis has not been available in Korea until we introduced bivalent (serogroup A and C) polysaccharide vaccine for the first time for relief works in our university hospital. The vaccine was administered from January 2005 to March 2007 to 317 persons. of the groups administered, the largest group among them were 133 (133/317, 42%) students who planned to study abroad and needed the vaccination for secure entrance to school dormitories. This group was followed by health care workers, travellers to the regions of the world with high risks of meningococcal diseases, and splenectomised patients. To ratioalize the domestic use of meningococcal vaccine, the availability of vaccines first needs to be simplified by introducing them to the domestic market; for this to be possible, the approval system for vaccines should be reformed and epidemiogical studies need to be carried out.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We report the discovery of Li-rich Li1+x[(Ni0.225Co0.15Mn0.625)1−yVy]O2 as a cathode material for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries in which a small amount of tetravalent vanadium (V4+) is selectively and completely incorporated into the manganese sites in the lattice structure. The unwanted oxidation of vanadium to form a V2O5-like secondary phase during high-temperature crystallization is prevented by uniformly dispersing the vanadium ions in coprecipitated [(Ni0.225Co0.15Mn0.625)1−yVy](OH)2 particles.
