      • Urinary concentration of transforming growth factor-&bgr;-inducible gene-h3(&bgr;ig-h3) in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus

        <P>Abstract</P><P>Aims </P><P>The expression of TGF&bgr;-inducible gene h3(&bgr;ig-h3) has been used to assess the biological activity of TGF&bgr; in the kidney. In this study, we investigated whether the urinary concentration of &bgr;ig-h3 is associated with diabetic nephropathy in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. We also evaluated the relationship between the urinary concentration of &bgr;ig-3 and proteinuria and microalbuminuria (AER) in a normal healthy population and in Type 2 diabetes patients.</P><P>Methods </P><P>Four hundred and seventy-nine Type 2 diabetic patients without non-diabetic kidney diseases and 528 healthy control subjects were enrolled. The study subjects were divided into five groups: a non-diabetic healthy control group with normal ACR (<I>n</I> = 443), a non-diabetic healthy control group with microalbuminuria (<I>n</I> = 85), a normoalbuminuric diabetic group (<I>n</I> = 198), a microalbuminuric diabetic group (<I>n</I> = 155) and an overt proteinuria group (<I>n</I> = 126). Urinary levels of &bgr;ig-h3 were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.</P><P>Results </P><P>(i) Urinary excretion of &bgr;ig-h3 was significantly higher in the diabetic groups than in the controls, even in the normoalbuminuric stage (25.02 ± 8.84 vs. 18.67 ± 6.56, <I>P</I> = 0.03). In diabetic patients, urinary &bgr;ig-h3 levels increased significantly as diabetic nephropathy advanced (25.02 ± 8.84 vs. 34.06 ± 24.55 vs. 169.63 ± 57.33, <I>P</I> < 0.001). (ii) Proteinuria was found to be significantly correlated with urinary &bgr;ig-h3 (healthy control; <I>r</I> = 0.137, <I>P</I> = 0.019, diabetic patients; <I>r</I> = 0.604, <I>P</I> < 0.001). ACR was also found to be significantly related with urinary &bgr;ig-h3 in diabetic patients (<I>r =</I> 0.383, <I>P</I> = 0.006). (iii) In diabetic patients, urinary &bgr;ig-h3 was significantly related with systolic and diastolic blood pressure (systolic blood pressure: <I>r</I> = 0.436, <I>P</I> = 0.024; diastolic blood pressure, <I>r</I> = 0.365, <I>P</I> = 0.042), total cholesterol and HbA<SUB>1c</SUB> (cholesterol: <I>r</I> = 0.169, <I>P</I> = 0.03, HbA<SUB>1c</SUB>; <I>r</I> = 0.387, <I>P</I> = 0.044). Logistic regression analyses showed that urinary &bgr;ig-h3 was associated with a significant increase in the risk of microalbuminuria and proteinuria in diabetic patients.</P><P>Conclusions </P><P>Longitudinal monitoring of urinary &bgr;ig-h3 may improve the likelihood of detecting diabetic nephropathy at an earlier stage and &bgr;ig-h3 could be a sensitive marker of diabetic kidney disease progression.</P>

      • Inhibition of sulfide mineral oxidation by surface coating agents: Batch and field studies

        The potential of several surface coating agents to inhibit the oxidation of metal sulfide minerals from Young-Dong coal mine and the Il-Gwang gold mine was examined by conducting laboratory scale batch experiments and field tests. Powdered pyrite as a standard sulfide mineral and rock samples from two mine outcrops were mixed with six coating agents (KH<SUB>2</SUB>PO<SUB>4</SUB>, MgO and KMnO<SUB>4</SUB> as chemical agents, and apatite, cement and manganite as mineral agents) and incubated with oxidizing agents (H<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> or NaClO). For the observed time period (8 days), Young-Dong coal mine samples exhibited the least sulfate (SO<SUB>4</SUB><SUP>2-</SUP>) production in the presence of KMnO<SUB>4</SUB> (16%) or cement (4%) while, for Il-Gwang mine samples, the least SO<SUB>4</SUB><SUP>2-</SUP> production was observed in presence of KH<SUB>2</SUB>PO<SUB>4</SUB> (8%) or cement (2%) compared to control. Field-scale pilot tests at the Il-Gwang site also showed that addition of KH<SUB>2</SUB>PO<SUB>4</SUB> decreased SO<SUB>4</SUB><SUP>2-</SUP> production from 200 to 13mgL<SUP>-1</SUP> and it also reduced Cu and Mn from 8 and 3mgL<SUP>-1</SUP>, respectively to <0.05mgL<SUP>-1</SUP> (below ICP-OES detection limits). The experimental results suggested that the use of surface coating agents is a promising alternative for sulfide oxidation inhibition at acid mine drainage sites.

        In this paper Dielectric and polarizable properties of 0.9Pb(Mg_(1/3)Nb_(2/3))O_(3)-0.1PbTiO_(3) Ceramics have been investigated as a addition of the amount of La_(2)O_(3)(0≤x≤0.05). The Temperature-dependant electrostictive characteristics of 0.9PMN-0.1PT relaxor ferroelectic system were improved by enhencing the extent of the diffuse phase transition(DPT). This was achieved using PMN-PTceramics by the partial substitution of La at the Pb site. The curie temperature and the maximum dielectic permittivity decreased by substituting La and the electic field-related hysteresis phenomena decreased with increasing La substitution amount.

      • Structural Characterizationand Catalytic Activityof Ce<sub>0.65</sub>Zr<sub>0.25</sub>RE<sub>0.1</sub>O<sub>2−δ</sub> Nanocrystalline Powders Synthesized by the Glycine-Nitrate Process

        <P>In this study, Ce<SUB>0.65</SUB>Zr<SUB>0.25</SUB>RE<SUB>0.1</SUB>O<SUB>2−δ</SUB> (RE = Tb, Gd, Eu, Sm, Nd, Pr,and La)solid solutions were successfully prepared by the glycine-nitrateprocess and tested for CO oxidation activity. The X-ray diffractionresults confirmed the formation of complete Ce<SUB>0.65</SUB>Zr<SUB>0.25</SUB>RE<SUB>0.1</SUB>O<SUB>2−δ</SUB> solid solutions.The Raman spectroscopy measurements suggested the presence of oxygenvacancies due to defective structure formation and further evidencedthe formation of solid solution. The high-resolution transmissionelectron microscopy observations showed the nanocrystalline natureof the solid solutions. From X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysisit was revealed that the cerium, terbium, and praseodymium are presentin +3 and +4 oxidation states. The UV–vis diffuse reflectancespectroscopy indicated that the Pr<SUP>3+</SUP> ions in the Ce<SUB>0.65</SUB>Zr<SUB>0.25</SUB>Pr<SUB>0.1</SUB>O<SUB>2−δ</SUB> system provoked a significant increase in the Ce<SUP>3+</SUP> fractionon the surface. H<SUB>2</SUB> temperature-programmed reduction measurementsshowed an enhanced surface reduction at much lower temperatures forCe<SUB>0.65</SUB>Zr<SUB>0.25</SUB>Pr<SUB>0.1</SUB>O<SUB>2−δ</SUB> sample compared to others, indicating increased oxygen mobilityin these samples, which enable the enhanced oxygen diffusion at lowertemperatures.       • 대학생 커플 간의 성 의사소통 양상에 따른 성 태도, 성적 자율성 및 성 만족도의 상관관계에 관한 연구

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate sexual communication among college student couples and to analyze the relationship among sexual communication, sexual attitude, sexual autonomy and sexual satisfaction. Methods: Using a descriptive correlation study design, 281 college student couples were recruited through convenience random sampling from September 18th to October 3rd, 2014. Data were analyzed using average, standard deviation, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Duncan’s test and Pearson’s correlation using the SPSS 21.0 program. Results: In both genders, it is identified that high scores for sexual communication is related to sexual openness (male: R= .347, p<0.01 / female: R=.337, p<0.01) higher sexual satisfaction (male: R= .349, p<0.01 / female: R=.336, p<0.01) and sexual autonomy (male: R= .336, p<0.01 / female: R=.364, p<0.01). The same outcome is found when each male and female are grouped as a couple. Among sub-categories of sexual attitude, sexual pleasure was related to sexual communication the most in male (R=.337, p<0.01), female groups (R=.317, p<0.01) and couples (R=.402, p<0.01). Among sub-categories of sexual satisfaction, psychological factor was related to sexual communication the most in the male group (R=.342, p<0.01) and interactive factor was related to sexual communication the most in the female group (R=.317, p<0.01) and couples (R=.402, p<0.01). Conclusion: The significance of this research is that the relations of sexual communication with the other three dependent variables among each gender and couples are shown. In addition, this study suggests the importance of sexual communication between couples which will lead to healthier and better quality of sexual relationships. However, with the lack of sufficient advanced research, there are limitations of analyzing each variables divided by demographic characteristics.

      • Physicochemical properties of Ni-loaded yttrium stabilized zirconia nanotubes for solid oxide fuel cells

        Yttrium-stabilized zirconia nanotubes (YSZNTs) were prepared using a conventional hydrothermal method, and their characteristics were compared with those of yttrium-stabilized zirconia nanoparticles (YSZNPs) synthesized in this study and with those of commercial YSZNPs (CYSZNPs). YSZNTs had widths and lengths of 20-30nm and 100-700nm respectively. The electrical conductivity of NiO (60.0wt%)-loaded YSZNTs (40.0wt%) was higher than those of NiO/YSZNPs and NiO/CYSZNPs at the same NiO loading. The zeta-potentials of YSZNTs in aqueous solution, determined by electrophoretic light scattering (ELS), indicated high positive surface charges at lower pH values, which is known to be related to surface stability, but negative values at high pH. The results of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and H<SUB>2</SUB>-temperature-programmed reduction (H<SUB>2</SUB>-TPR) confirmed that NiO(60.0wt%)/YSZNTs (E<SUB>red</SUB>=-0.445mV) were more reduced than NiO/YSZNPs (E<SUB>red</SUB>=-0.517mV) and NiO/CYSZNPs (E<SUB>red</SUB>=-0.516mV).

      • A prospective multicentre phase II study of cisplatin and weekly docetaxel as first-line treatment for recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal cancer (KCSG HN07-01)

        Background: The purpose of this phase II study was to determine the efficacy and toxicity of cisplatin and weekly docetaxel combination chemotherapy as a first-line treatment in patients with recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal cancer. Patients and Methods: Recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal cancer patients were enrolled and received a combination of weekly docetaxel (35mg/m<SUP>2</SUP> on Day1 and Day8) and cisplatin (70mg/m<SUP>2</SUP> D1) every 21days, for up to a maximum of 6 cycles. The primary endpoint was objective response rate, and the secondary endpoints included toxicity of combination chemotherapy, progression-free survival, overall survival and 1-year survival rate. Results: In total, 47 patients were enrolled and analysed, and 46 patients (97.9%) completed the planned protocol. In an intent-to-treat analysis, 6 patients (12.8%) achieved complete response (CR) and 27 patients (57.4%) showed partial response (PR), with an objective response rate of 70.2%. The median progression-free survival and overall survival were 9.6months (95% C.I. 5.7-13.5months) and 28.5months (95% C.I. 16.9-40.1months), respectively, and the 1-year survival rate was 89.9%. The common grade 3 adverse events were stomatitis (1.2%), neutropenia (0.8%), anaemia (0.8%), infection (0.8%) and diarrhoea (0.8%). Grade 4 adverse events were not observed in this study. Conclusions: The combination chemotherapy of cisplatin and weekly docetaxel is highly effective and shows favourable toxicity as a first-line chemotherapy in patients with recurrent or metastatic nasopharyngeal cancer.

        In order to suggest the proper optimal conditions of the CNC milling machining for the Thin-wall surface, some experiments were carried out. The process was applied in the aerospace industry for the machining of light alloys, notably aluminium. In recent year, however, the mold and die industry has begun to use the technology for the production of components, including those manufactured from hardened tool steels. And the end mill is an important tool in the milling process. A typical example for the end mill is the milling of pocket and slot in which a lot of material is removed from the work piece. Therefore the proper selection of cutting parameter for end milling is one of the important factors affecting the cutting cost.
