Both medical ethics and medical English are being taught in most of the premedical courses in Korea since both subjects are considered to be very important in medical education. We have taught medical ethics using English texts in medical English class of premedical course. Students were given tasks of various tests, reports, and presentations in English and part of the lectures were given in English. We have investigated the effectiveness of this type of teaching medical ethics in English using questionnaire survey to premedical students, medical students, and residents who have completed medical ethics in English class at their premedical periods. The survey questioned mainly in the following three areas; if they could understand medical ethics and it was helpful in making ethical decisions at their resident time although it was taught in English, if the class was helpful for their advanced medical ethics class at their medical course and making ethical decisions at their resident time, and if the English they have learned in the class has helped their study of medicine through the medical school and resident time. Most of them responded favorably to all the three questions. In conclusion, teaching medical ethics in medical English class in premedical course appears to be an effective way of teaching both medical ethics and medical English at the same time.
Chitosan/poly(L-lactic acid) multilayered membrane for guided tissue regeneration

<P>A chitosan/poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) multilayered membrane was prepared for the purpose of guided tissue regeneration (GTR). The membrane was composed of the outer layers of chitosan mesh and the middle layer of nanoporous PLLA membrane. The outer membranes of chitosan fibrous mesh present a highly biocompatible and rough surface for ease of cell adherence. The PLLA membrane is intended to provide mechanical strength to the membrane, thereby preventing epithelial invasion. The PLLA membrane was applied as a local drug delivery carrier for growth factors. Regular pores in PLLA membrane were generated through phase inversion of polymer solution. The membrane retained its integrity during the degradation process in vitro (for up to 8 weeks), which is a requirement for providing enough space in vivo in the GTR procedure. Osteoblasts firmly attached to broad cytoplasmic extensions along with the microfibers of the membrane. The phenotypic expression of cultured osteoblasts on the membrane was measured by a reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. New bone had formed beneath the chitosan/PLLA membrane. Internal/External Use of Dendrimer in Catalysis

Dendrimers, well-defined hyper-branched macromolecules with characteristic globular structures, have inspired chemists and chemical engineers to develop new materials and several applications have been explored. The dendritic molecule has emerged as an attractive material in the field of catalysis and various dendrimer catalysts have been applied not only to catalytic reactions but also to non-catalytic ones such as nanoscale reactor systems. This article presents a review of research work on the dendrimer-based catalysis involving the rational design of homogeneous or heterogeneous chiraldendrimer catalysts for enantioselective reactions and the synthesis of catalytically active bimetallic nanoparticles in the presence of dendrimer as a template.

This study aims to propose the application method of renewable energy systems to apartment houses in Korea and to suggest the process of integrating renewable energy systems into architectural elements. Case studies were conducted to apply various renewable systems to apartment houses according to the suggested process. Renewable systems were classified according to their characteristics, and optimum systems were proposed based on the specific conditions of apartment houses. Finally, energy performance of renewable energy systems applied to apartment houses were estimated using computer simulation. The study includes that the application of renewable energy systems to apartment houses in Korea is feasible in terms of energy consumption reduction.
