Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how strategic human resource management practices are enacted in chaebol hotels, and also to evaluate the relationship between the SHRM practices and organizational effectiveness as experienced by employees, regarding the concept of organizational justice. Design/methodology/approach: The questionnaire survey for employees served to test hypotheses which examine the relationship between SHRM and the influence of these HR practices on organizational effectiveness, using multi-regression analysis. This research encompasses a total of 450 responses collected from individuals employed at chaebol hotels in Seoul and Busan. Findings: This study revealed that chaebol hotels hired competent employees who had language capabilities, used appearance as a selection criterion, and ensured that sophisticated selection methods were well established through the HR systems of numerous subsidiary companies. Employees consider the perceived injustices in the recruitment and selection process and the perceived unfairness in promotions. Research limitations/implications: All findings support the concept that the best practice, driven by collectivism, employment legislation, trade unions, and financial considerations, plays a significant role in managing HRM in chaebol hotels. This study contributes a new SHRM framework by integrating a combination of best fit, based on quality enhancement strategy, and best practices tailored to the specific organization. Originality/value: This study contributed to explore the SHRM framework for the Chaebol hotel sector with regard to providing both high quality of service and also a high price policy. This study provides guidelines for efficient SHRM to managers and practitioners who operate deluxe hotels and offers an essential material to gain a better understanding of a new SHRM framework in service organization.

Internal Alkene Hydroaminations Catalyzed by Zirconium(IV) Complexes and Asymmetric Alkene Hydroaminations Catalyzed by Yttrium(III) Complexes

        Kim, Hyunseok,Kim, Young Kwan,Shim, Jun Hwan,Kim, Misook,Han, Mijung,Livinghouse, Tom,Lee, Phil Ho WILEY-VCH Verlag 2006 Advanced Synthesis & Catalysis Vol.348 No.18

<P>The thiophosphinic amide 2 was prepared in 68 % yield by the reaction of 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine with diisopropylchlorophosphine followed by the addition of sulfur. Attachment of the proligand 2 to zirconium was achieved by direct metalation with Zr(NMe2)4 in benzene-d6 or toluene-d8 to afford complex 3 via elimination of dimethylamine. The neutral Zr(IV) complex 3 has been shown to be an effective precatalyst for intramolecular alkene hydroaminations that provide cyclic amines in good to excellent yields. A variety of chiral ligands (20, 22, 24, and 25–30) were prepared for asymmetric internal alkene hydroaminations. Metalation of chiral ligands to yttrium was accomplished with Y[N(TMS)2]3 in benzene-d6 or toluene-d8 to give complexes. Treatment of 7 with 5 mol % of 33 in benzene-d6 (25 °C, 18 h) or toluene-d8 (25 °C, 15 h) afforded 2,4,4-trimethylpyrrolidine 14 in 95 % yield (61 % ee).</P> <B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P> <img src='wiley_img/16154150-2006-348-18-ADSC200606171-content.gif' alt='wiley_img/16154150-2006-348-18-ADSC200606171-content'> </P>

      • The Complexity of Scientific Knowledge on Socioscientific Issues: A Study of Students’ Decision Making on Local Issues in Western Canada

Mijung Kim 한국캐나다학회 2015 Asia-Pacific Journal of Canadian Studies (APJCS) Vol.21 No.2

The role of scientific knowledge in one’s decision making has been a critical question in scientific literacy for citizenship in society. This study looks into the challenges of decision making in socioscientific and environmental issues and how scientific evidences and data are perceived in the complexity of the issues. 5th year university students in western Canada participated in the discussion of local environmental issues for future actions. Distrust toward scientific evidence and uncertainty of future consequences of their decision making were evident in students’ discussions. This undermined the role of scientific knowledge in decision making on complex socioscientific issues. Scientific knowledge was not sufficient to solve the local socioscientific issues and often complexly intertwined with other domains of knowledge. This raises some concerns about the current implementation of science curriculum which focuses on the acquisition of scientific knowledge as scientific literacy.

A Monte-Carlo IntraNuclear Cascade calculation for the propagation of energetic nucleons in nuclei.

        Mijung Kim,Hyoung C. Bhang,Hyeonseo Park,Jong H. Chang,Jungho Kim,Young D. Kim 한국물리학회 2005 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.46 No.4

We report the results of a basic Monte Carlo Intranuclear Cascade (INC) simulation calculation which has been developed for nuclear reaction calculations adopting a realistic Woods-Saxon-type nuclear density in order to investigate the propagation of energetic nucleons in nuclear medium. The results of the INC calculation are compared with those of inclusive proton inelastic scattering (p,p’) and charge-exchange (p,n) reactions to study the systematics of the energy and the mass dependences of the reactions. The angle integrated (total) reaction spectra for proton inelastic scattering are very well reproduced over a wide dynamic range of emitted particles for all three of our targets, 12C, 27Al, and 56Fe. The INC calculation we have formulated reproduces the mass dependence very well without adjusting parameters. It also works successfully for the chargeexchange reaction, (p,n), but not as good as for the inelastic scattering. The energy dependence of the reaction cross-section has been checked with the charge-exchange reaction and has been eproduced reasonably well, but it began to deteriorate at the proton incident energy, 45 MeV. Overall, the INC calculation reproduces the total cross-sections of the (p,p’) and the (p,n) reactions well over a wide range of beam energies and target masses, providing nice grounds for its application to various situations in which nuclear reactions are involved.

      • Age-related alterations in mesenchymal stem cells related to shift in differentiation from osteogenic to adipogenic potential: Implication to age-associated bone diseases and defects

        Kim, MiJung,Kim, ChanWha,Choi, Yu Suk,Kim, MinHwan,Park, ChanJeoung,Suh, Yousin Elsevier 2012 Mechanisms of ageing and development Vol.133 No.5

<P><B>Highlights</B></P><P>► MSC aging is a major obstacle limiting the success of cell therapy interventions. ► MSC aging shifts the balance in favor of adipocyte differentiation than osteoblast. ► How aging makes preferential shift from osteogenic to adipogenic differentiation. ► Information from this report can be used to develop future solutions to MSC aging.</P> <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have attracted considerable attention in the fields of cell and gene therapy due to their intrinsic ability to differentiate into multiple lineages. The various therapeutic applications involving MSC require initial expansion and/or differentiation <I>in vitro</I> prior to clinical use. However, serial passages of MSC in culture lead to decreased differentiation potential and stem cell characteristics, eventually inducing cellular aging which will limit the success of cell-based therapeutic interventions. Here we review the age-related changes that occur in MSC with a special focus on the shift of differentiation potential from osteogenic to adipogenic lineage during the MSC aging processes and how aging causes this preferential shift by oxidative stress and/or energy metabolism defect. Oxidative stress-related signals and some microRNAs affect the differentiation potential shift of MSC by directly targeting key regulatory factors such as Runx-2 or PPAR-γ, and energy metabolism pathway is involved as well. All information described here including transcription factors, microRNAs and FoxOs could be used towards development of treatment regimens for age-related bone diseases and related defects based on mutually exclusive lineage fate determination of MSC.</P>

      • Precise Control of Quantum Dot Location within the P3HT-<i>b</i>-P2VP/QD Nanowires Formed by Crystallization-Driven 1D Growth of Hybrid Dimeric Seeds

        Kim, Yong-Jae,Cho, Chul-Hee,Paek, Kwanyeol,Jo, Mijung,Park, Mi-kyoung,Lee, Na-Eun,Kim, Youn-joong,Kim, Bumjoon J.,Lee, Eunji American Chemical Society 2014 JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY - Vol.136 No.7

<P>Herein, we report a simple fabrication of hybrid nanowires (NWs) composed of a p-type conjugated polymer (CP) and n-type inorganic quantum dots (QDs) by exploiting the crystallization-driven solution assembly of poly(3-hexylthiophene)-<I>b</I>-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (P3HT-<I>b</I>-P2VP) rod–coil amphiphiles. The visualization of the crystallization-driven growth evolution of hybrid NWs through systematic transmission electron microscopy experiments showed that discrete dimeric CdSe QDs bridged by P3HT-<I>b</I>-P2VP polymers were generated during the initial state of crystallization. These, in turn, assemble into elongated fibrils, forming the coaxial P3HT-<I>b</I>-P2VP/QDs hybrid NWs. In particular, the location of the QD arrays within the single strand of P3HT-<I>b</I>-P2VP can be controlled precisely by manipulating the regioregularity (RR) values of P3HT block and the relative lengths of P2VP block. The degree of coaxiality of the QD arrays was shown to depend on the coplanarity of the thiophene rings of P3HT block, which can be controlled by the RR value of P3HT block. In addition, the location of QDs could be regulated at the specific-local site of P3HT-<I>b</I>-P2VP NW according to the surface characteristics of QDs. As an example, the comparison of two different QDs coated with hydrophobic alkyl-terminated and hydroxyl-terminated molecules, respectively, is used to elucidate the effect of the surface properties of QDs on their nanolocation in the NW.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jacsat/2014/jacsat.2014.136.issue-7/ja410165f/production/images/medium/ja-2013-10165f_0008.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ja410165f'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

An Analytical Study on Research Trends in Auriculotherapy in Korea

        Kim, Mijung,Chung, Eunyoung,Jung, Mi Sook 기본간호학회 2020 기본간호학회지 Vol.27 No.4

Purpose: This study was done to analyze research articles and explore research trends in auriculotherapy between 2010 and 2019 in Korean academic journals. Methods: Domestic databases including KMbase, RISS, KISS, and NDSL were searched for studies published between 2010 and 2019. Research trends were analyzed according to The STandards Reporting Interventions in Clinical Trials of Acupuncture (STRICTA) guidelines including research design, control group type, and intervention details from a total of 78 domestic papers. Descriptive statistics were analyzed by frequency and percentage. Results: Most studies were conducted in nursing. Regarding research design, a quasi-experimental design with a no-treatment control group was most common. There were 12 conditions with 4 participant categories. The most common intervention was four-point acupuncture-buried therapy. Interventions conducted weekly with cessation of 2 days for 6 weeks were popular. Regarding dropouts, few studies reported side-effects, with personal reasons being the most frequently reported. However, 50% of the studies failed to provide adequate information regarding intervention details according to the STRICTA guidelines, such as the practitioner background, ear point used for intervention, and a flow diagram. Conclusion: Interventional studies on auriculotherapy have been steadily increasing and have included more diversified conditions. Future studies should investigate the effects of auriculotherapy with more rigorous design, and report more detailed information regarding interventions.
