A S trategic Human Resource Management Approach in Chaebol Hotels

        Mijung Kim(Mijung Kim),Yeonu Lee(Yeonu Lee) People&Global Business Association 2023 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.28 No.4

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how strategic human resource management practices are enacted in chaebol hotels, and also to evaluate the relationship between the SHRM practices and organizational effectiveness as experienced by employees, regarding the concept of organizational justice. Design/methodology/approach: The questionnaire survey for employees served to test hypotheses which examine the relationship between SHRM and the influence of these HR practices on organizational effectiveness, using multi-regression analysis. This research encompasses a total of 450 responses collected from individuals employed at chaebol hotels in Seoul and Busan. Findings: This study revealed that chaebol hotels hired competent employees who had language capabilities, used appearance as a selection criterion, and ensured that sophisticated selection methods were well established through the HR systems of numerous subsidiary companies. Employees consider the perceived injustices in the recruitment and selection process and the perceived unfairness in promotions. Research limitations/implications: All findings support the concept that the best practice, driven by collectivism, employment legislation, trade unions, and financial considerations, plays a significant role in managing HRM in chaebol hotels. This study contributes a new SHRM framework by integrating a combination of best fit, based on quality enhancement strategy, and best practices tailored to the specific organization. Originality/value: This study contributed to explore the SHRM framework for the Chaebol hotel sector with regard to providing both high quality of service and also a high price policy. This study provides guidelines for efficient SHRM to managers and practitioners who operate deluxe hotels and offers an essential material to gain a better understanding of a new SHRM framework in service organization.

      • Age-related alterations in mesenchymal stem cells related to shift in differentiation from osteogenic to adipogenic potential: Implication to age-associated bone diseases and defects

        Kim, MiJung,Kim, ChanWha,Choi, Yu Suk,Kim, MinHwan,Park, ChanJeoung,Suh, Yousin Elsevier 2012 Mechanisms of ageing and development Vol.133 No.5

<P><B>Highlights</B></P><P>► MSC aging is a major obstacle limiting the success of cell therapy interventions. ► MSC aging shifts the balance in favor of adipocyte differentiation than osteoblast. ► How aging makes preferential shift from osteogenic to adipogenic differentiation. ► Information from this report can be used to develop future solutions to MSC aging.</P> <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have attracted considerable attention in the fields of cell and gene therapy due to their intrinsic ability to differentiate into multiple lineages. The various therapeutic applications involving MSC require initial expansion and/or differentiation <I>in vitro</I> prior to clinical use. However, serial passages of MSC in culture lead to decreased differentiation potential and stem cell characteristics, eventually inducing cellular aging which will limit the success of cell-based therapeutic interventions. Here we review the age-related changes that occur in MSC with a special focus on the shift of differentiation potential from osteogenic to adipogenic lineage during the MSC aging processes and how aging causes this preferential shift by oxidative stress and/or energy metabolism defect. Oxidative stress-related signals and some microRNAs affect the differentiation potential shift of MSC by directly targeting key regulatory factors such as Runx-2 or PPAR-γ, and energy metabolism pathway is involved as well. All information described here including transcription factors, microRNAs and FoxOs could be used towards development of treatment regimens for age-related bone diseases and related defects based on mutually exclusive lineage fate determination of MSC.</P>

A Monte-Carlo IntraNuclear Cascade calculation for the propagation of energetic nucleons in nuclei.

        Mijung Kim,Hyoung C. Bhang,Hyeonseo Park,Jong H. Chang,Jungho Kim,Young D. Kim 한국물리학회 2005 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.46 No.4

We report the results of a basic Monte Carlo Intranuclear Cascade (INC) simulation calculation which has been developed for nuclear reaction calculations adopting a realistic Woods-Saxon-type nuclear density in order to investigate the propagation of energetic nucleons in nuclear medium. The results of the INC calculation are compared with those of inclusive proton inelastic scattering (p,p’) and charge-exchange (p,n) reactions to study the systematics of the energy and the mass dependences of the reactions. The angle integrated (total) reaction spectra for proton inelastic scattering are very well reproduced over a wide dynamic range of emitted particles for all three of our targets, 12C, 27Al, and 56Fe. The INC calculation we have formulated reproduces the mass dependence very well without adjusting parameters. It also works successfully for the chargeexchange reaction, (p,n), but not as good as for the inelastic scattering. The energy dependence of the reaction cross-section has been checked with the charge-exchange reaction and has been eproduced reasonably well, but it began to deteriorate at the proton incident energy, 45 MeV. Overall, the INC calculation reproduces the total cross-sections of the (p,p’) and the (p,n) reactions well over a wide range of beam energies and target masses, providing nice grounds for its application to various situations in which nuclear reactions are involved.

Comparison of viability and antioxidant capacity between canine adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells and heme oxygenase-1-overexpressed cells after freeze-thawing

        KIM, Mijung,KIM, Yongsun,LEE, Seunghoon,KUK, Minyoung,KIM, Ah Young,KIM, Wanhee,KWEON, Oh-Kyeong The Japanese Society of Veterinary Science 2016 The Journal of veterinary medical science Vol.78 No.4

<P>Allogenic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (Ad-MSCs) are an alternative source for cytotherapy owing to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Frozen-thawed allogenic Ad-MSCs can be used instantly for this purpose. However, the viability and function of frozen-thawed Ad-MSCs have not been clearly evaluated. The purpose of this study was to compare the viability and function of Ad-MSCs and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1)-overexpressed Ad-MSCs <I>in vitro</I> after freeze-thawing. The viability, proliferation, antioxidant capacity and mRNA gene expression of growth factors were evaluated. Frozen-thawed cells showed significantly lower viability than fresh cells (77% for Ad-MSCs and 71% for HO-1 Ad-MSCs, <I>P</I><0.01). However, the proliferation rate of frozen-thawed Ad-MSCs increased and did not differ from that of fresh Ad-MSCs after 3 days of culture. In contrast, the proliferation rate of HO-1-overexpressed Ad-MSCs was lower than that of Ad-MSCs. The mRNA expression levels of <I>TGF-β</I>, <I>HGF</I> and <I>VEGF</I> did not differ between fresh and frozen-thawed Ad-MSCs, but <I>COX-2</I> and <I>IL-6</I> had significantly higher mRNA expression in frozen cells than fresh cells (<I>P</I><0.05). Fresh Ad-MSCs exhibited higher <I>HO-1</I> mRNA expression than frozen-thawed Ad-MSCs, and fresh HO-1-overexpressed Ad-MSCs exhibited higher than fresh Ad-MSCs (<I>P</I><0.05). However, there was no significant difference between fresh and frozen HO-1-overexpressed Ad-MSCs. The antioxidant capacity of HO-1-overexpressed Ad-MSCs was significantly higher than that of Ad-MSCs. Cryopreservation of Ad-MSCs negatively affects viability and antioxidant capacity, and HO-1-overexpressed Ad-MSCs might be useful to maximize the effect of Ad-MSCs for cytotherapy.</P>

      • Fine mapping the UV-B resistance gene in soybean using 180K Axiom SoyaSNP assay

        Sungmin Kim,Ju Seok Lee,Sumin Park,Kyungryun Kim,Mijung Cho,Eunsil Kim,Bo-Keun Ha,Sungtaeg Kang 한국육종학회 2015 한국육종학회 심포지엄 Vol.2015 No.07

The depletion of stratospheric ozone has resulted in increased amount of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B: 280-320 nm) reaching the Earth’s surface and could cause significant biological effect in plants. In this study, putative quantitative trait loci (QTL), which is responsible to UV-B resistance in soybean, was identified using recently developed high-density 180K Axiom SoyaSNP genotyping array. A population of 115 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between susceptible Keunolkong and resistant Iksan 10 was analyzed. A total 8,970 polymorphic SNP markers were used to construct linkage map. The both parents and RILs were grown with supplemental UV-B radiation in a greenhouse condition. Three categories of UV-B induced morphological damage, degree of leaf chlorosis, leaf shape change, and total plant damage were evaluated. Using composite interval mapping analysis, one major QTL associated with all of the phenotypic traits was detected on 7.7cM of soybean chromosome 7 with 22 of LOD score accounting for about 60% of phenotypic variance. Also, the allele from Iksan 10 were responsible for the UV-B resistance. Thus, the UV-B resistance QTL on chromosome 7 from Iksan 10 was designated to qUVBR1, corresponding to 30kb on the Williams 82 genome assembly (Glyma2.0) including 7 candidate genes. This result could be useful in breeding for new foxglove aphid resistant soybean cultivars. In addition, these results provided useful information not only for marker-assisted selection for UV-B resistance soybean, but also for the future identification of putative candidate genes, responsible for UV-B resistance in soybean.

        1950년대 부산 지역미술의 리얼리즘 경향

        김미정(Kim Mijung) 한국근현대미술사학회 2011 한국근현대미술사학 Vol.22 No.-

This paper explores a stream of korean realism art focusing on the artists in Busan area post Korean war. At that time around Busan, there were some distinctive artistic inclinations to represent the humanistic reality and social issus. Kim Kyung and Kim Youngduk seems to be eminent among the 1950’s painters as a member of ‘Tobyuk [土壁]’ and ‘Chungmak [靑脈]’. After researching their life and arts, I came to a conculsion that their achieves need to be reevaluated as the realism art after korean war. Follwing the general view on Korean modern art after war, It has been insisted that korean art stream shows the locus from figurative art toward the abstract until resently. But there were radical politic voice like Muijung Art as the realistic art trends in 1980’s and two different kinds of realistic aspects as social realism at 1920-30’s and romantic history paintings of Lee Quedae during the liberation times. Furthermore the diaspora artists like Jo Yang-gyu residing in Japan was newly evaluated as expressive realistic painter. They trid to make artistic efforts to reveal the concerns of life and the social issue of historical statues. Besides I’d like to introduce some artists of Busan area at this time, who didn’t miss the concerns on society and history either. Even though the abstract and pure art dominated the korean modern art during some periods, realism has been never broken off during the whole span of korean modern art. To this goal, I examined the Busan art field microscopically, then I realized the artists from Seoul invited some animosity to the Busan arti field and the local artists felt the competition toward the visitors. So after the artists returning to their home, the local artist made efforts to make new their own group as ‘Tobyuk’ and ‘Chungmak.’ And they tried to make their own specific art tendencies. As a result they insisted the realistic art contrary to the abstract art which was exploded in Seoul art field. The specific trends in Busan area were connected to the post war Europe figurative art movement as ‘Homme Temoin’, Mexican mural paintings and German expressive prints of Kathe Kolwitz. Especially post war realistic inclination in Busan seems to be intimately associated with the Japanese post-war realism or reportage art. I think that these connections are exceptional phenomena during the post war korean art.
