Nationalism, Multiculturalism, and Translation: Translation in and of Please Look After Mom

        유재은 한국영어영문학회 2020 영어 영문학 Vol.66 No.2

In 2011, Please Look After Mom, a translation of a mega-bestseller novel in Korea, entered the American literary market with a significant commercial success. A close analysis of the translation, along with the celebration and controversy it caused on both sides of the pacific, reveal interesting and often paradoxical ideas about translation and its role in introducing cultural differences. The Korean original, Ommarul Put’akhae, employs translation to signify radical unsettling differences, and as a metaphor that epitomizes a meeting between the self and the other, translation raises questions concerning the complex relationship one has with the other. The translation of Please Look After Mom reduces critical layers of the original novel, and the reason why it was noted and read by many American readers had more to do with the U.S. than with Korea—more specifically, the cultural dilemma that the U.S. found itself in after 9/11. At the same time, however, Please Look After Mom retains and even possibly strengthens the peculiar way in which translation is thematized in the Korean source text. In other words, as a metaphor that epitomizes a contact between the self and the other, translation in and of Please Look After Mom raises important questions concerning national identities, cultural differences, international politics and interpersonal responsibilities. This article reads Please Look After Mom not only as a translated text, but also as a cultural phenomenon to examine cultural and political forces at work at the site of translation today.

Evaluation of the Automated Immunohematology Analyzer DAYMATE M

        유재은,유해인,최현유,이규형,송영선,이승옥,제갈동욱,김용구 대한진단검사의학회 2017 Laboratory Medicine Online Vol.7 No.4

Background: An automated immunohematology analyzer, DAYMATE M (DAY Medical, Switzerland), has been recently developed. The potential of this analyzer to improve test results has been evaluated. Methods: A total of 300 blood samples from Seoul St. Mary’s hospital and Incheon St. Mary’s hospital were tested for ABO and RhD typing. In addition, 336 antibody screening test (AST) samples and 82 patients treated with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) were included. AST results by DAYMATE M were compared with those obtained by a manual method using DS-Screening II (Bio-Rad Laboratories, Switzerland) and red blood cells from Selectogen (Ortho-Clinical diagnostics Inc., USA). Results: Of the 300 patients enrolled, 87, 73, 79, and 61 had type A, B, O, and AB blood, respectively. The concordance rate was 99.9% for cell typing and 97.0% for serum typing. One discordant case was classified as type B instead of AB, and six discordant serum-typing cases were type A, but classified as type AB. Among the 336 AST samples, the concordance rate was 93.2%. From 136 positive cases, six were discordant. Within the 82 HSCT-treated patients, the concordance rate for ABO blood typing was 92.2%. Among the six discordant cases, DAYMATE M typed four cases as donor type where the standard method typed them as the recipient blood type. Conclusions: The DAYMATE M automated immunohematology analyzer performs reliably for ABO and RhD typing, as well as for ASTs and on samples from patients treated with HSCT.

“The Kindness of Strangers”: Paul Yoon’s Cosmopolitan Imagination in Snow Hunters

        유재은 미국소설학회 2017 미국소설 Vol.24 No.2

This paper examines major issues in recent discussion of cosmopolitanism and analyze Yoon’s rendering of cosmopolitan interactions in Snow Hunters. The newly forming cosmopolitanism, distinct from the traditional one that was refined in Western Europe under the influence the Enlightenment, is less antagonistic to nationalism and more focused on gaps, crevices, and overlaps in the national and cultural boundaries. Its goal is to delineate basic ethical responsibility toward political and cultural others while retaining respect for their particular lives. Paul Yoon’s Snow Hunters revises the traditional western cosmopolitanism by focusing on the fluid movements between the positions of a host and a guest displayed by its diasporic main characters. Ultimately, Yoon portrays how, interspersed with and yet counteracting the painful and fragmented memories of Yohan, the traumatized protagonist of the novel, small acts of kindness from strangers and of his own sustain and then heal him.

Vol.19 No.-

Bokam-ri site was excavated from July 1996 to September 1998 and archaeologically assumed to be grouped with tombs of Mahan period. Among these groups, Tomb No. 3 had built up with stone chamber and found one pair of gilted footware near the jar coffin. This footware was severely corroded and cracked so transfered it gently with soil. Radiography film of this footware showed spike decorations on the bottom and fish-shapped ornament. Gilted footware was consolidated with soil using Paraloid B72 10%~15%solution and cleaned using small tools and microscope. SV427 and HV427 as epoxy resin and Araldite(rapid type) used for joining and restoring. The fore part of gilted footware was connected with nails and folded “L” shape to introduce the bottom material. Tortoise-shell design and flower ornaments appeared on the surface and fish-shaped ornaments, spikes and spangles on the bottom. It was found that 7 spikes and 5 fish-shaped ornaments remained well. Especially, Fish-shaped ornaments were firstly found in the gilted footware and appraised archaeologically important materials.

“Here Stands a Man”: Home and Re-membering 1950s Manhood after 9/11

        유재은 문학과영상학회 2016 문학과영상 Vol.17 No.1

This essay examines the ways in which Toni Morrison challenges the 1950s notion of manhood as it is revived in the U.S. after 9/11. In the nationalistic response to the terrorist attack, American politics and popular culture expressed strong nostalgia for the 1950s as it is generally considered to be the period of American dominance and prosperity. However, in Home, Morrison takes “the scab off the 50’s,” as she has announced in an interview. In Home, 1950s American society makes it impossible for a boy to grow up as a man. The protagonist of the novel, Frank Money, had to identify with an animal rather than a black man who was treated like a beast, but represses the memory afterward. Participating in the Korean War and then returning back to the U.S., Frank reproduces the violence he has experienced, yet tries desperately to hold on to the image of himself as a protector of women—a core element of masculinity as it is evoked in the aftermath of 9/11. The stark contrast between what he actually does and what he wants to see himself as threatens his mental health, and his suppressed memories rupture the narrative in the figure of a ghost. Through this ghost and the movie He Ran All the Way (1951), Morrison implies that it is not only Frank that has repressed memories: America has deliberately forgotten dark sides of its past and forged a false self-image. This, I argue, is a poignant comment on the cultural and political atmosphere of the time when Home was written.

Vol.22 No.-

No. 3 Tomb of Bogam-ri, in Naju City, Chollanam-do Province, was a site excavated and inspected from 1996 to 1998 and had a various grave forms, including jar-coffins, stone-chambers and stone-cists. Although most of the metal artifacts excavated from it were severely corroded, we could implement microstructure investigation by collecting samples from the iron axes, iron coffin-nails and iron clamps in which the metal parts were remained. The metal structures were inspected by using metallographic microscope and SEM, and fine components analysis was implemented by ICP. To examine the hardness differences in accordance with the structure distribution, we measured the hardness by structures with Vickers hardness testing machine. As a result of the metal structure inspection, most of them were pure iron, ferrite, and also pearlite, cementite and widmannstaten structures were displayed. We could confirm carbonization was formed on the surface of the iron axes-B, iron coffin-nails-B, and iron clamps-A. There was no carbonization in the rest of the artifacts, and it is not certain that whether the carbonized parts were peeled off through extreme corrosion or they were not carbonized when they were made. In the particular part of a blade, the quality of the material was strengthened through processing. Due to the processing re-grain was caused and fine grain particles were formed. As a result of the ICP component analysis, there were no addition atoms because pure irons were used as materials. In the mean time, No. 17 jar-coffin where the iron axes-A are excavated, is chronologically ordered as from the late-fourth century to the mid-fifth century, and No. 1 and No. 2 stone chambers, where the rest of the artifacts were excavated, as the early-sixth century. It was difficult to relate the periodic differences with the manufacture technique artifacts which we inspected because there were no distinct characteristics of the manufacture technique of the metal structures and it is impossible to conclude the artifacts and sites are at the same period although their periods are different.
