A pulse power supply using IGBTs and MPC (magnetic pulse compression) circuit was developed for a metal vapor laser. The life time of the pulse power supply is expected to be much longer than that of a vacuum tube or thyratron type pulse power supply. A series-connected IGBT array generated a long pulse of its pulse width 2 μs and then it was compressed to less than 100 ns by a three stage MPC circuit. This pulse power supply was applied to a laser plasma tube of 10 mm inner diameter and 0.5 m discharge length, and successfully operated.

An IGBT driver for serially connected pulse switching IGBTs was contructed and tested. The IGBT driver has ten output pulses with 1μ sec pulse width. Its pulse repetition-rate can adjusted from 0to20 ㎑. The output pulses was insulated from 10㎾ high voltage by a pulse transformer. Their voltage amplitude are 18V, voltage rising time 252 nsec, and voltage falling time 200 nsec when IGBT gates with 12nF input capacitance are connected.<br/> <br/>

This paper shows circuits and their output characteristics of a pulse power supply for pulsed laser diodes. The power supply is designed of its output voltages over than 100V, currents 100A, pulse repetition rates 100㎐, and pulse width 10㎲~500㎲.

The high repetition rate thyratron trigger pulse generator was constructed and tested. It consists of the pulse generator with 800 V,8 A, and 2μs pulse width, the negative bias power supply with DC(-)150V, and the keep-alive power supply with DC 200 V. For the purpose of fast riding time and high repetition rate operation, a MOSFET was used as a main switching device.
Arc Discharge Characteristics of a Long Pulse Ion Source for the KSTAR Neutral Beam Injector

A long pulse ion source (LPIS) for the neutral beam injector (NBI) has been developed for the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) superconducting tokamak. The arc discharge characteristics of the ion source were investigated on the first KSTAR neutral beam injector (NBI-1). The ion source consists of a magnetic bucket plasma generator with multi-pole cusp fields and a set of prototype tetrode accelerators with circular apertures. The inner volume of the plasma generator in the LPIS ion source is approximately 47.2 liters. Design requirements for the ion source were a 120 kV/65A deuterium beam and a 300 s pulse length. Arc discharges of the plasma generator with deuterium gases have been controlled by using the space charge-limited mode and have been operated by using a sufficient heating voltage on the cathode filaments. Stable and efficient arc plasmas up to an arc power of 70 kW have been produced by using a constantpower-mode operation of the arc power supply. The reliable operation region of the arc discharges has been investigated for various filament heating voltages, arc powers, and amounts of injected deuterium gas in the LPIS.
