How can we understand the paradox that the failure of historical avant-gardes consists in their artistic success? The key matter here must be autonomy. Is it either an ideology to be dismantled or a historical achievement to be retained? By situating John Cage in a historical context and paying special attention to the period between the historical avant-garde and the neo-avantgarde, namely Cage’s pre-chance period, I shall search for how to redeem an avant-garde music from its inherent fate. Firstly, in doing so, it will be argued that within the framework of ‘Either/Or’ an avant-garde music can only be put in the above mentioned paradox or dilemma. The reason is that although the autonomy and the heteronomy are opposite to each other, they also simultaneously continue to turn into the other. In the light of such a dialectical view, an avant-garde music must be understood as both part of modernism (insofar as it responds to the autonomy of art) and a break with modernism (for it calls into question that autonomy). The article concludes that the realization of the logic of ‘Both/And’ can furnish the way to go beyond the dilemma. 이 글은 무엇보다 역사적 맥락 속에 케이지를 놓고 보려는 시도이다. 그 밑바탕에 놓인 역사적 관심사는 “삼중의 변증법적 대립”(칼리니스쿠 1994, xviii)의 전개로 서술되는 미적 모더니티의 서사와 케이지의 관계이다. 특히 주목하는 것은 “역사적 아방가르드”(뷔르거)와 네오아방가르드 사이의 이행기, 즉 케이지의 《4분 33초》(1952)에서 분수령을 이루는 시기이다. 이 무렵 케이지의 작업에서 우리는 자기부정을 함축하는 아방가르드의 딜레마를 해소할 또 다른 논리를 찾을 수 있기 때문이다. 이로써 운명(殞命)을 운명(運命)으로 타고난 아방가르드를 살리는 법을 케이지의 말⋅글⋅음악 가운데서 찾으려는 것이 이 글의 목표이다. 이는 케이지의 후기 작업을 이해하는 데 결정적인 ‘우연성 이전 시기’에 대한 재평가와 연결될 뿐만 아니라 그의 텍스트 실천과 음악 실천 사이의 상호영향까지 확인할 좋은 기회를 마련해줄 것이다. 역사적 아방가르드의 실패가 자신의 예술적 성공에 놓여 있는 역설을 어떻게 이해해야 하는가? 문제는 자율성이다. 그것은 철회되어야 할 부르주아 이데올로기인가, 계속 유지되고 존중받아야 할 역사적 성취인가? 이것 아니면 저것인가? 양자택일은 어떤 식으로든 부정성에 헌신했으나 정작 그 자신이 기존의 긍정적 질서에 기생하거나 결탁하게 되는 일을 피할수 없다. 그 이유는 첫째 예술의 자율성은 사회와 ‘매개’된 상대적 자율성이기 때문이다. 둘째, 미적 모더니티 자체에 내재한 모순으로 인해 자율성과 타율성은 끊임없이 대립하면서 자신과 정반대되는 것으로 끊임없이 전도되기 때문이다. 이와 같은 변증법적 시각에서 볼 때 아방가르드는 예술의 자율성에 반작용하는 한 모더니즘의 일부이기도 하고 또 예술제도를 문제시하는 한 모더니즘과의 단절이기도 하다. 양자택일의 진퇴양난에 빠지지 않는 길은 바로 이 양면성의 논리를 깨닫는 것부터 시작할 수 있을 것이다.

Bi0.4Sb1.6Te3 solid solutions were synthesized by using encapsulated melting (EM) and were consolidated by using hot extrusion (HE), and their thermoelectric and mechanical properties were examined and compared with those of specimens prepared by using hot pressing (HP). The relative densities of all hot-extruded specimens were higher than 97%. The basal plane (00l) was preferentially orientated parallel, rather than perpendicular, to the HE direction. The values of the orientation factor (F) were as follows: Fmax = 0.082 for specimens hot-extruded at 723 K and Fmax = 0.115 for specimens hot-pressed at 723 K. Thus, the crystallographic anisotropy was not high. From the pole figure and the electron backscatter diffraction analyses, the microstructures and the crystallinities of the HE specimens were found to be similar and comparable to those of the HP specimens. A bending strength of 57 MPa and a Vickers hardness of 74 Hv were obtained for Bi0.4Sb1.6Te3 hot-extruded at 698 K, which were superior to the corresponding properties of the HP specimens. However, the mechanical properties degraded with increasing HE temperature owing to the occurrence of grain growth. All specimens exhibited a negative temperature dependence for the electrical conductivity, indicating a degenerate semiconductor behavior. All Seebeck coefficients showed positive signs (p-type conduction); they attained peak values at 373 K and then decreased with increasing temperature owing to intrinsic conduction. The HE specimens exhibited lower values of the power factor than the HP specimens did because of the lower electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of the former. The thermal conductivity was lower than 1.0 Wm−1K−1 at room temperature, and it increased slightly with increasing temperature. The maximum figure of merit, ZTmax = 1.04, and the average figure of merit, ZTave = 0.87, were achieved at 323 K for Bi0.4Sb1.6Te3 hot-extruded at 698 K.

Nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease (NTM-LD) is being increasingly recognized as an important condition predisposing to the development of chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA), but there are limited data on the risk factors for CPA occurring in patients with NTM-LD. We reviewed the medical records of 587 consecutive patients with NTM-LD who were treated for more than 12 months between January 2010 and June 2015. After excluding 91 patients with NTM-LD who were initially diagnosed with concurrent CPA , CPA was diagnosed 23 (interquartile range [IQR], 15-36) months after initiating treatment or NTM-LD in 41 patients. The clinical characteristics of the 41 patients who developed CPA and the 546 patients who did not, were compared and risk factors for developing CPA were assessed . On multivariate analysis, male (P = 0.005), lower body mass index (P = 0.001), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (P < 0.001), prior steroid use (P = 0.001), Mycobacterium abscessus etiology (P < 0.001), M. massiliense etiology (P = 0.003), and cavitary lesion (P < 0.001) were found to be significantly associated with developing CPA. Patients with NTM-LD who developed CPA had higher mortality rates than those without CPA (19.5% [8/41] vs. 1.6% [9/546]; P < 0.001) after a median of 24 (IQR, 17-34) months. In conclusion, some clinical characteristics were associated with the development of CPA in patients with NTM-LD during the follow-up period, and the prognosis of these patients was poor. The early diagnosis and treatment of CPA are important in patients with NTM-LD.

Tachinus (Tachinus) javanus Cameron is identified for the first time in the Korean Peninsula. Description, illustrations of habitus and diagnostic characters, and a key to the known species of Korean Tachinus Gravenhorst are provided. Tachinus (Tachinus) yezoensis Li is redescribed with male characteristics.
