Prediction of semen's fertilizing ability used in artificial insemination (AI) is one of very important factors on pig reproductive performance. In vitro fertilization (IVF) has been used for indirect evaluation of sperm's fertilizing ability and it has been showed as highly correlated index. In swine industry, increasing interest in preservation of boar semen raises questions on the sperm motility from semen used in commercial AI centers. Mitochondria in sperm mid-piece generate the energy to support motility and could be an explanation of impaired fertility. Objective of this study was to suggest usable sperm motility to farms in measuring the effect of sperm motility and sperm abnormality on in vitro production of embryo in which sperm's fertilizing ability can be determined indirectly. Semen samples were provided from local AI center and used within 3 days after collection. Semen samples were divided by 4 different motile groups (>70%; 61~70%; 51~60%; <50%) using CASA (computer-assisted sperm analysis) on the days of IVF. Developmental rate to the blastocyst stage from over 61% motile sperm group showed significantly higher rate than below 60% motile sperm group (16.5 ± 0.7~18.4 ± 0.8% vs 6.3 ± 0.8~11.5 ± 0.7%, p<0.05). In experiment to determine the relationship between sperm motility and viability and abnormality, over 61% motile sperm groups showed significantly higher viability rate compared to below 60% motile sperm groups (84.8 ± 4.0~88.1 ± 4.0% vs 69.1 ± 4.0~74.2 ±4.0%, p<0.05). On the other hand, morphological sperm abnormality showed significantly higher in over 70% motile sperm group (10.2 ± 2.2 vs 16.0 ± 2.2~21.0 ± 2.2%, p<0.05). In experiment to find the correlation between sperm motility of 4 different motile groups and amount of mitochondria, lower motility group also showed lower level of mitochondria (p<0.05). The mitochondria parameter used in this study showed another possibility to differentiate the sperm motility. Taken together, because below 60% motile semen used in AI reduce the fertility, AI centers should provide the over 60% motile sperm to the farms at the time of AI.
Genotype–phenotype correlation of Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 1E patients with PMP22 mutations

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1E (CMT1E) is a demyelinating motor and sensory neuropathy with peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP22) point mutations. The objective of this study was to identify genetic causes and determine genotype–phenotype correlation in two Korean demyelinating CMT patients based on whole exome sequencing (WES), histological examination of distal sural nerve, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of leg. WES revealed two de novo PMP22 mutations in the two demyelinating CMT patients, including one novel p.Leu82Pro (c.245T[A) mutation in one patient and one previously reported p.Ser72Leu (c.215C[T) mutation in the other patient. Both mutation sites were located in the well conserved second transmembrane domain. No control had the same mutations. The affected individual with the novel p.Leu82Pro mutation showed early onset, scoliosis, and sensory ataxia with ability to walk without assistance. Histopathological examination showed severe damage of myelin and axons. No compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) were evoked in the upper or lower limb nerves. Leg MRIs revealed mild fatty infiltration of the bilateral peronei muscles consistent with clinical manifestations. The patient with the p.Ser72Leu mutation showed developmental delay in infancy. No CMAPs were elicited. However, she was also able to walk without assistance. In spite of markedly severe electrophysiological defects, leg MRIs showed almost normal findings except slight muscle atrophies of the lower legs. Both patients presented similar clinical features including no CMAPs in electrophysiological tests and mild fatty replacement in the lower leg MRI. Therefore, there was a good genotype–phenotype correlation in both cases.

Previous studies have shown that methanol extract and its butanol fraction of Carthamus tinctorius L. Semen have the hepatoprotective effect on the CCl₄ induced hepatotoxicity. The hepatoprotective effect of the subfractions of butanol fraction has been evaluated by analyzing oxygen free radical scavenging enzyme activities and histopathological examinations. In BS-5 subfraction treated group, the activity of superoxide dismutase has been significantly increased as compared with that of CCl₄ treated rats. Antioxidant activity has been evaluated by the examination of the scavenging activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical. BS-5 subfraction has shown strong antioxidant activities. The histopathological examination showed that the treatment of BS-5 subfraction has relieved the ballooning degeneration of hepatocytes which had been generated by CCl₄. It appears that the protective effect of BS-5 subfraction would be mediated of the attenuation of lipid peroxidation by acting as a free radical scavenger, which were based on the increase of superoxide dismutase activity.

Nodular fasciitis is a benign proliferative spindle-cell lesion that presents as a rapidly growing mass with rich cellularity and mitotic activity, leading to its frequent misidentification of a sarcoma. Most cases of nodular fasciitis are diagnosed in adults aged 20-40 years and is rarely seen during the first 4-5 years of life. Because of its rapid growth and bony erosion, it often mi-mics malignancy. We report a case of an 18-month-old infant with a rapidly growing mass on the right nasolabial fold. Because of the anatomic location and CT findings, we first suspected nasolabial cyst. However, it proved to be an intramuscular type of nodular fasciitis, a very rare occurrence in infancy.

I compared the rate of rancidity by heating to the 2 kinds of marketed edible oil(sample A, sample B), and controlled these samples by adding the anti-oxidant. 1) Rate of rancidity between sample A and sample B appeared considerable gap; generally, sample B was lower. 2) Acid value increased rapidly about 6 hours after, peroxide value and carbonyl value were 2 hours after. 3) Addition of anti-oxidant resisted the rate of rancidity and it was more notable as time goes by.

Though food safety efforts of the government has been increasing, but the health hazards resulting from food does not stop and thus increases consumers' anxiety and distrust of government. For more reliable safety management, developing analysis and intake measurement methods and strengthening regulatory control with strict criteria is necessary. In addition, as not only the known hazards by now, but also unknown but obvious hazards are simultaneously ongoing in current environments, the unified risk management and health assessment for food, health food and medicines from the media is critical. As risks and damage to health may show up after a long time after exposure,preventive measures and strategies for safety control is also needed.
