We determined the complete chloroplast genome sequence of Ligustrum foliosum Nakai, an endemicspecies of Korea. The plastome was 165,731 bp long, with a large single copy (90,009 bp), a small singlecopy (11,448 bp), and a pair of inverted repeats (32,137 bp). Moreover, 113 genes were encoded, including79 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis of 18 species usingconcatenated 78 protein-coding genes (excluding one pseudogene) revealed that L. foliosum is mostclosely related to L. quihoui, having strong bootstrap values. This study is the first report of the chloro plast genome of L. foliosum and provides important information for future phylogenetic studies on Lig ustrum and distinguishing closely related species of Ligustrum.

The change of the skin are acute reaction of erythema or sunburn, and/or prolonged and accumulated exposure commonly associated with degenerative changes, skin, aging, actinic keratosis and carcinoma after exposure to ultraviolet light. Topically applied protective agents are screen or barriers, absorb light of a particular wavelength or reflect it, which protect viable cells and has been used to decrease the risk of development, to prevent exacerbation of photodermatoses, pigmentary disorders, as melasma and freckles. The purpose of the study was to evaluate and comparative the several sunscreen agents available on the human skin of 40 healthy volunteers by indoor method and sunlight. The results were as follows: 1. In the development of minimal erythema doses, the average noted 4.8 minutes in ultraviolet light-B, 12.6 minutes in ultraviolet light-A, and 15.4 minutes in sunlight. 2. The sunprotective factors of 1.7% p-aminobenzoic acid, 0.3% benzophenone in cream were 12.1 in ultraviolet light-B, 8.2 in ultraviolet light-A, 6.3 in sunlight with highest effectiveness, and that of 5% p-amino-benzoic acid in oil were 1.6, 2.4, 1.3 with lowest effectiveness. 3. 1.7% p-aminobenzoic acid, 0.3% benzophenone in cream gave protection similar to that of 5% p-aminobenzoic acid in 70% ethylalcohol. 4. In the vehicle, the effectiveness of alcohol type agent is better than that of oil type of 5% p-aminobenzoic acid.

Sargassum horneri is a sea-drifting brown macroalga often found along the coast of East Asian countries. It was recently found to be drifting from China toward Jeju Island in South Korea, causing damage to fisheries and vessels. Being considered as a marine waste, a huge amount of S. horneri was collected in the past 5 years, but an efficient and proper way to treat it has still not been found. Therefore, it is required to develop technologies to tackle this issue. Here, we conducted bioconversion of S. horneri by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae in order to utilize it as a biomass source for producing ethanol. First, S. cerevisiae was engineered to extend its substrate range to mannitol, which is one of the major components of brown algae. Activation of the native HXT17 and MAN2 genes enabled the yeast to metabolize mannitol as the sole carbon source. Impact of pretreatment conditions, the type of hydrolytic enzymes, and biomass solid loadings on the ethanol production by the yeast were evaluated. The highest ethanol productivity was obtained when the biomass was pretreated at 121 o C and ethanol concentration was the highest when the biomass loading was 24% (w/v), giving the maximum concentrations of monosaccharides and ethanol of 47.29 g/ L and 22.94 g/L, respectively. The results obtained from this study suggest possible utilization of S. horneri as a raw material for cellulosic bioethanol production.

This study was carried out to identify the vascular flora of Mt. Bonghwa in the Baekdudaegan Mountain range, located on the border between Namwon City and Jangsu Country in Jeollabuk Province and Hamyang Country in Gyeongsangnam Province and use them as basic data for the conservation of plant diversity and prevention of the spread of alien plants. Specimens deposited at the Herbarium of Korea National Arboretum (KH) were reexamined, and 15 field surveys were conducted from April 2020 to July 2023. The result revealed a total of 466 taxa, consisting of 97 families, 279 genera, 409 species, 16 subspecies, 32 varieties and 9 forms, Of which, eight taxa were endemic plants, and one taxon, Aconitum coreanum (H.Lév.), belonged to the vulnerable (VU) on the national red list species. Moreover, there were 57 floristic target species, including 1 taxon of grade Ⅴ, 9 taxa of grade III, 14 taxa of grade II, and 33 taxa of grade I, whereas there were 24 taxa of alien plants and 1 taxon of ecosystem disturbance species. In the usefulness survey, 353 taxa were for food, 3 for textiles, 71 for medicinal use, 21 for ornamental use, 108 for pasture use, 2 for industrial use, 7 for miscellaneous use, and 11 for timber plants. 본 연구는 전라북도 남원시, 장수군과 경상남도 함양군의 경계에 위치한 백두대간 봉화산의 관속식물상을 파악하여, 생물다양성 보존 및 외래식물의 확산 방지를 위한 기초자료로 활용하기 위하여 조사를 실시하였다. 국립수목원 산림생물표본관에 소장된 봉화산 표본 검토와 함께, 2020년 4월부터 2023년 7월까지 총 15회에 걸쳐 현지조사를 수행하였다. 그 결과, 본 조사 지역의 관속식물은 97과 279속 409종 16아종 32변종 9품종의 총 466분류군으로 조사되었다. 이 중 특산식물은 8분류군, 적색목록 중 취약(VU)에 속하는 종은 1분류군으로 확인되었다. 식물구계학적 특정식물종은 총 57분류군으로 Ⅴ등급에 1분류군, Ⅲ등급에 9분류군, Ⅱ등급에 14분류군, Ⅰ등급에 33분류군이 각각 발견되었으며, 외래식물은 24분류군, 그리고 생태계교란야생종은 1분류군이었다. 분류군의 유용성 조사에서 식용 353분류군, 섬유용 3분류군, 약용 71분류군, 관상용 21분류군, 목초용 108분류군, 공업용 2분류군, 잡용 7분류군, 용재용 11분류군으로 나타났다.
