N/A Gas is prone to be entrapped in the casting resulting from the reaction of molten metal with mold coating material and resin hardened sand cores during filling in gravity diecasting of aluminum alloys with complex shape. Tilted pouring is known to be one of the method to eliminate the gas defect, in which tilting speed and angle are important as operation variables. Transparent water model was employed to observe the gas entrapment and liberation during pouring of complex shaped casting in this study. As a result, slow tilting combined with movable pouring ladle is recommended to evolute gas effectively in gravity diecasting.

N/A Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy for gravity die casting is used widely of which Mg is important because of promoting the natural aging effect and machinability. Possibility of Mg loss in the form of oxide and chloride is, however, higher than that of the other elements, since standard formation free energy(ΔG°) of Mg for oxide and chloride is lower than that of the other elements. The aim of this study is to clear the reason of Mg loss and to draw up the plan of Mg protection. Two methods were chosen for protection of Mg loss; The first was addition of elements that form protective film prohibiting the oxidation of Mg/or has lower standard formation free energy for chemical compound than Mg. The second was the adoption of different degassing method to minimize the Mg loss. The variations of Mg contents with remelting, additional element and degassing process were observed and the influences of Mg on those properties-mechanical properties, gas contents and microstructures etc-were also investigated. As the number of remelting increased, Mg content decreased. Na was introduced as chloridizing inhibitor for Mg, but Na was not found to protect Mg loss. A little protective effect was found by adding large amount of Be. With using gas bubbling method, the change of Mg content, before and after degassing, was not noticeable. It was found that the latter method, in terms of Mg loss protection, were more effective than the former method(elements addition) in Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy melt for gravity die casting.

Objective: This paper aims to examine the association between painful physical symptoms (PPS) and major depressive disorder (MDD) in a naturalistic clinical practice setting within a Korean population. Methods: Patients with acute MDD that joined a multicountry, observational, three-month study in six Asian countries and regions were classified as PPS+ (mean score ≥2) and PPS-(mean score <2) using the modified Somatic Symptom Inventory. In this analysis, we report the results from the Korean subset, where depression severity was assessed using the Clinical Global Impression of Severity (CGI-S) scale and 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD17). Pain severity was measured using a visual analogue scale (VAS), while the EuroQoL (EQ-5D) assessed patient well-being. Results: Of 198 patients, 45.96% (91/198) of patients were classified as PPS+, of which 78.02% (71/91) were women. PPS+ patients had significantly more severe depression at baseline {CGI-S score, mean [standard deviation (SD)], PPS+: 5.09 [0.79]; PPS-: 4.63 [0.76]; p<0.001; HAMD17 total score, mean [SD], PPS+: 24.34 [5.24]; PPS-: 20.76 [5.12]; p<0.001} and poorer quality of life [EQ-5D overall health state, mean (SD), PPS+: 39.37 (20.52); PPS-: 51.27 [20.78]; p<0.001] than PPS- patients. Both groups improved significantly (p<0.001) in depression and pain severity outcomes, as well as quality of life by endpoint, but no significant within-group baseline-to-endpoint change wase observed. Conclusion: The frequency of PPS was common in Korean patients with MDD, and was associated with more severe depression, poorer quality of life, and a trend towards poorer clinical outcome.

This paper describes determination of optimal lubricant quantity for driving gear unit. The purpose of selecting optimal lubricant quantity is to evaluate durability of driving gear unit. Lubricant quantity of driving gear unit is important factor affecting durability. The determination methode of lubricant quantity evaluation is used calculation necessary lubricant quantity first, then selection of optimal oil quantity as a base for moving of oil temperature according to changing oil quantity.

parameters and BMD of renal transplants. Methods: Using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), we assessed total body and regional (head, arm, trunk, rib, leg, spine, and pelvis) bone mineral density. Results: 1) Total body BMD of renal transplants was significantly decreased compared with that of normal controls. 2) A separate analysis of BMD in both sexes revealed that males presented marked reduction of BMD compared with the normal controls in the majority of skeletal sites except head and pelvis. Especially, at the spine, their BMD was significantly reduced compared with that of the CRF patients on receiving dialysis in addition to the normal controls. Females also presented reduction of BMD compared with the normal controls in many skeletal sites except head and ribs. 3) The correlations between BMD values and time since renal transplantation and cumulative cyclosporine doses were statistically significant (r=0.46, 0.527, respectively, and p<0.01) in nearly all skeletal sites except head and spine. Conclusion: Our results indicate that significant falls in BMD appear to be inherent to the process of renal transplantation although it achieves the rapid correction of some of the biochemical abnormalities associated with renal failure and that therapeutic strategies to prevent or reduce this damages should be established. In addition, the present study emphasizes the need to pay attention to the further evaluation of correlations between bone loss in renal transplants and some drugs, such as glucocorticoids and cyclosporine.

N/A Shell sand is widely used to make a complex shape castings due to its good collapsibility. When molten metal is poured into the mold, various gases are generated by the thermal decomposition of binder in the shell core. Casting defects such as blow hole and blister come from these gases. If it is possible to predict the evolution of gas quantitatively, it may provide effective solutions for minimizing the casting defects. To examine the gas evolution by shell core quantitatively, casting experiment and calculation were carried out. Gas pressure and gas volume evolved by shell core were measured in the experiment, and temperature distribution in the shell core was obtained by heat transfer analysis. From the result above, prediction on the gas volume evolved during pouring was tried. As forming pressure of the shell core increased and forming temperature decreased, the gas evolution increased. There was a close relationship between the calculated gas volume evolved and the measured one. (Received July 20, 1998)

N/A Background : Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) achieves higher cure rates for cutaneous squamous cell and basal cell carcunomas than any other therapeutic modality. For a unifocal tumor, a 100% cure rate after MMS should theoretically be possible, however for primary basal cell carcinoma, 98-99% 5-year disease-free rates have been achieved. Objective : Our purpose was to investigate the pitfalls in microsscopic Interpretation of frozen sections in Mohs micrographic surgery for basal cell carcinoma which decrease the cure rate after surgery. Methods : From March 1991 to February 1998, fifty-nine patients were diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma at our department. All the tumors were removed with Mohs micrographic surgery and frozen section specimens were stained with hematoxylin-eosin. The microscopic evaluation was done by Mohs surgeon and pathologist. Results : We can summarize the matters that demand special attention during microscopic Interpretation of frozen sections in Mohs surgery as two groups. First, as false negative interpretation, there are 1) small nests of tumor scattered within areas of heavy inflammation 2) tumor present along the hair follicle, 3) tumor present along a cut edge, 4) empty space in a tissue section, 5) hair follicle-like structure of the tumor, 6) gland-like structure of the tumor, and 7) infiltrative BCC-like inflammatory cells. Second, as a false positive interpretation, there are 1) foreign body reactions or scar containing trapped pilosevaceous structures, 2) horizontal and tangential cuts through the pilosevaceous apparatus, 3) some epidermal neoplasms including solar lentigines, seborrheic leratoses, and acantholytic actinic keratoses, and 4) contamination of the tumor tissue. Conclusion : With careful attention to the examples which can affect the interpretation as mentioned above, it may be possible to detect complete removal of tumor mass and achieve higher cure rate. We could achieve a 100% of cure rate for primary basal cell carcinoma and 95% of cure rate for recurrent basal cell carcinoma after Mohs Micrigraphic surgery in our hospital from March 1991 to February 1998.
