Objectives: The morbidity and mortality of diabetes mellitus have increased with the improvement of our economy. To these days, there is no report on the cause of death associated with NIDDM in Korea, but it has been generally accepted that infection may be the leading cause of death in NIDDM patients. But recently, with the improvement of infection control technique and the clinical application of new effective antibiotics, it is suspected that the death due to infection is decreasing. And, due to improvement of skill of diabetic control, the life expectancy of the diabetics has been increased. So, we hypothesized that macrovascular diseases complicated with Diabetes Mellitus may play central role in death of diabetics, resembling in developed country. In this study, we try to confirm this hypothesis. Methods: We analysed the cause of death of 149 NIDDM patients on the basis of death certificates from major hospitals in Pusan, Korea. We compared the major cause of death such as cardiovascular disorder and infection with those of general population on the basis of the 1992's statistical mortality analysis. Results: 1) In the decreased 149 Non-insulin dependent diabetics, death from cerebrovascular disease was 24.8% (37/149), infection was 24.2% (36/149), ischemic heart disease was 12.8% (12/149), congestive heart failure was 9.4% (14/149). Death due to diabetic metabolic complications, liver disease, malignant tumor and renal failure were 6.0%, 5.4%, 4.7% and 3.3% respectively. 2) When we compared the major cause of death of non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients with that of general population by observed to expected death ratio(O/E ratio), infection was 7.8, congestive heart failure was 4.1, ischemic heart diease and cerebrovascular disease were 3.3 and 1.4 respectively. 3) When cerebrovascular disease, ischemic heart disease and congestive heart failure were defined together as cardiovascular disorder, O/E ratio was 2.0, and this is lower than that of infection. Conclusion: The large vessel disease is the most common cause of death in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in Pusan, Korea. So, not only strict glycemic control, but detecting the risk factors related to large vessel disease and its control is important. This type of management may influence the diabetic's life expectancy ultimately, Generally, infection has been thought to be decreasing in recent years but, it is still one of the major cause of death in Korea. We have to detect infection early and treat it actively in non-insulin-dependent diabetic population.

Engine control parameters were analyzed to know the influence on idle NVH characteristics. This study offers a background to improve idle NVH with optimization of several engine control parameters - engine speed, spark timing and control speed, valve timing, lambda controller - instead of engine hardware modifications.

Vehicle vibration characteristics at idle were improved when cylinder spark timing was controlled individually. New EMS logic applied to this study calculates cylinder-specific engine roughness and then advances or retards cylinder spark timing individually according to the calculated value of engine roughness. As cylinder spark timing was correcting, C0.5 vibrations at idle which are related to 1 cylinder torque imbalance were attenuating as well as overall engine roughness was. This result indicates that the new logic can be used as an effective way to reduce idle torque imbalance between cylinders at little additional cost.

Because nonspecific colonic ulcer is an unusual condition and varies markedly in clinical presentation and course, preoperative clinical diagnosis of nonspecific colonic ulcer is very difficult, But now, preoperative clinical diagnosis can he made by advent of colonofiberscopy. And, it is very important to diagnose this disease early, because late diagnosis make a poor prognosis. We report a case of nonspecific colonic ulcer diagnosed by repeated colonofiberscopy and treated with surgery.

Secondary adrenal insufficiency from pituitary macroadenoma is rare cause of hyponatremia. But elderly patients are particularly prone to hyponatremia of secondary adrenal insufficiency. We experienced a 66-year old male patient with hyponatremia as the initial manifestation of secondary adrenal insufficiency from pituitary macroadenoma. The symptoms of the patient were general weakness, headache, anorexia, and abdominal discomfort for several days. Laboratory examination indicated serum sodium/potassium 110/3.6 mEq/L. On dynamic examination of the anterior pituitary hormone, the patient had anterior pituitary insufficiency. Brain imaging was performed and the pituitary macroadenoma was discovered. Hyponatremia and symptoms were corrected by IV hydrocortisone. After substituting oral prednisolone for IV hydrocortisone, the patient was discharged.
Triglyceride의 Methyl Interesterification에 關한 硏究(第1報) : 酸觸媒의 比較

There are many papers or reports on the interesteification of triglycerides with methanol for gas-chromatography analysis. But there are few reports which compare of influences of various catalysts on the interesterification under variable conditions. In this paper it was studied that the effects of acid catalysts on the interesterification of triglycerides in solvent medium. The results are that 0.5% HCI and 0.5% H_2SO_4 based on sample are adequate as acid catalysts for interesterification and the reaction rate is accelerated in solvent medium, so the reaction time is decreased in comparisen with none solvent system. Comparing with two acid catalysts, in case of 0.5% concentration, H_2SO_4 catalyst is better than HCI catalysts, but vice versa in case of 0.3% concentration.

In order to examine the change of composition in the matrix of fire clay refractory during heating, the reaction between α-Al₂0₃ containing mullite particle and Na₂O·2SiO₂ glass was studied with varied temperatures from lhr. to 96hrs. Obtained results were as follows; 1) The dissolution process of mullite into glass is the first order reaction in the heating procedure of 3664 hrs and its activation energy was 50Kcal/ mole. In the case of longer heating time, diffusion rate of mullite particle into glass was saturated. 2) The content of α-Al₂O₃ in the particle increased slightly with the heating time. 3) In the process of reaction between mullite particle and Na₂O·2SiO₂ glass, both nephelite and carnegieite deposited. The amount of nephelite decreased with the rise of temperature, but that of carnegieite was affected by the amount of Na20.2SiO2 glass and heating temperature.

In this paper, the fatty acid composition of the domestic various vegetable oils were analyzed by Gas-Liquid Chromatography. The results are a) In any of all vegetable seed oils, there are palmitic acid as saturated fatty acid, and oleic acid and linoleic acid as unsaturated fatty acids. b) In carrots and pumpkins seed oils, it is found oleic acid to comprise more than 50% of all fatty acids of their oils. c) The vegetable seeds that in their oils contain linoleic acid more than 50% of all fatty acids of their seed oils are eggplants, red pepers, tomatos, lettuces, water mellons, Indian millets, Chrysanthemum coronariums, spinachs, Indian corns, cucumbers, burdocks, turfs, millets, sesames, melons, Welsh onions, and grape seeds etc. Especially, in the seed oils of eggplants, red pepers and Chrysantheum coronariums, it is found linoleic acid to comprise more than 50% of total fatty acids of their seed oils. d) In linseed and perilla seed oils it is found linolenic acid to comprise more than 50% of total fatty acids of their oils. e) Carrots contain considerable amount of low fatty acids in its seed oil. f) In rapeseed oils, there are much more erucic acid than any other vegetable seed oil that there are no detectable amount of it.
