We have examined radical scavenging effects, tyrosinase inhibition activities and anti-allergic activities on the methanol extracts of Opuntia ficus-indica cultivated in Cheju island. By the comparison of the four samples, methanol and 50% methanol extracts of respective fruits and stems of Opuntia, the most desirable activities were obtained in the sample of the stem's methanol extracts. Based on this analysis, further study to identify the active components in this sample is warranted.

N/A Background: This study was designed to determine the distance from skin to lumbar epidural space in obstetric parturients and whether weight, height, or PI(ponderal index, kg/m) might influence the epidural depth. Methods: 7l obstetric patients undergoing elective cesarean section during epidural anes- thesia in L2-3 level were partitioned into groups according to their prepregnant BMI(body mass index), and in each group weight, height, PI, epidural depth were measured. Results: All patients were classified as underweight(n=l8), normal(n=49), overweight(n= 4) and no one was partitioned into obese group. The distance from skin to lumbar epidural space was found to be 3.7 cm(underweight), 4. l cm(normal), 4.7 cm(over weight) and total mean distance was found to be 4.0cm. The epidural depth had correlations with weight and height in underweight, and weight and PI in normal, but had no correlation with any measurements in overweight group. Conclusion: These results suggest body weight may be a useful parameter for predicting the distance from skin to lumbar epidural space in underweight and normal weight obstet- ric parturients.

The National Agrobiodiversity Center of the RDA, Korea, has more than 22,700 accessions of global wheat genetic resources, includingKorean wheat cultivars and landraces. Despite the numerous efforts to develop high-quality, hard winter wheat, the employment of new geneticresources into Korean wheat breeding programs is still hampered by the different growing environments. To overcome this limitation, 200germplasms that were screened using the Genebank Management System (GMS) were evaluated in three different regions in Korea. In the2018-2019 trial, 55 lines that showed superior field performance and high protein content were selected from among the 200 germplasms. These lines were re-evaluated in the 2019-2020 trial, and 24 lines that had suitable traits for growth, grain yield, and grain protein contentin three locations were finally selected. These winter wheat germplasms also showed high yield stability throughout the three different environmentsin Korea. Preliminary screening using GMS information, consecutive regional tests, and quality tests could be effective procedures for thedevelopment of hard winter wheat in Korea. Therefore, introduction breeding could be a favorable breeding method aiming to improve quality,where useful genetic resources are limited.
개에서 기절심근의 기능 회복에 미치는 고농도 Fentanyl 단독마취와 Propofol-Fentanyl 혼합마취의 영향

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of propofol-fentanyl anesthesia in comparison with fentanyl alone on the functional recovery of postischemic reperfused myocardium and on the incidence of ischemia-reperfusion arrhythmia in an open-chest canine model. Methods: Dogs were subjected to l5 minutes of left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) occlusion followed by 3 hour of reperfusion during fentanyl (n=12) or propofol plus fentanyl (n=ll) anesthesia. Regional myocardial contractility was evaluated using systolic shortening (%SS), the preload recruitable stroke work slope (Mw), intramyocardial pressure (IMPs), and regional stroke work area (RSWA). Results: Dogs anesthetized with propofol-fentanyl had a significantly lower regional (%SS, Mw, IMPs, and RSWA) and global myocardial contractility (cardiac index, mean aortic pressure and left ventricular dP/dt) than fentanyl anesthetized dogs during pre-occlusion baseline. LAD occlusion produced a significant reduction in the regional contractile functions (%SS, Mw, IMPs, and RSWA) in both groups. During reperfusion, gradual return of the regional contractile functions (%SS, Mw, IMPs, RSWA) toward their respective baselines were observed without any differences between the groups. However, ventricular fibrillation associated with LAD occlusion was lower in the propofol-fentanyl group than in the fentanyl group (zero vs 33%, p$lt;0.05). Conclusion: Propofol supplementation over moderate-dose fentanyl reduces reperfusion arrhythmia during coronary occlusion and subsequent reperfusion but does not improve functional recovery of post-ischemic, reperfused myocardium compared with high-dose fentanyl anesthesia in dogs.
하지수술환자에서 지주막하차단에 미치는 척추경막외 병용마취의 효과

Background : Combined spinal epidural anesthesia(CSE) often produces a more extensive spinal block than expected. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of CSE on subarachnoid block in patients undergoing lower extremity surgery. Methods : Thirty-three patients who undergone lower extremity surgeries were randomly allocated to three groups of 11 patients each. Using needle through needle technique, all patients received a subarachnoid injection of hyperbaric 0.5% bupivacaine 1.6∼2.0 ml through a 25G Whitacre spinal needle. Group 1 received no extradural injection for 25min, but group 2 and 3 received extradural saline 10 ml and bupivacaine 10 ml 5min after the subarachnoid injection, respectively. Levels of sensory and motor block were assessed at 4, 6, 8, 10, 15, 20, and 25 min after subarachnoid injection. Results : The median values of maximum sensory block level were T7 in all groups. Levels of sensory blockade and the time to onset of maximum sensory blockade were similar among the three groups There was no significant difference in the degree of motor block among three groups. Conclusions : This study suggests that extradural saline 10 ml or 0.5% bupivacaine 10 ml which injected 5min after subarachnoid injection does not significantly influence the level of subarachnoid block in lower extremity surgical patients. However, further study is required to declare the safety or optimal dose of extradural injection during CSE. (Korean J Anesthesiol 1997; 33: 686∼691)
