The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of desensitization and flooding on the behavior of dogs during grooming, focusing on their response to the sound and skin stimulation while using a clipper. A total of 20 adult dogs over two years of age with complete personality formation were included in the study. Ten dogs, of which three were Bichons (average weight 5 kg), four were Poodles (average weight 5 kg), and three were Malteses (average weight 4 kg), were subjected to the desensitization process. The remaining 10 adult dogs were subjected to the flooding experiment, and were of the same breed and average weight as the adult dogs used in the desensitization process. The desensitization and the flooding were performed three times a day (approximately 1 min per session) for 10 days. For desensitization, statistical significance was observed only on the fifth day, when compared by breed (p<0.05). Overall, when compared by measurement day, the results of desensitization for Bichon, Poodle and Maltese dogs were statistically significant (p<0.05). The results for the Bichon, Poodle, and Maltese dogs that were subjected to flooding were found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). There was a significant difference in the results of the flooding on the second and ninth days (p<0.05); however, flooding had no effect on the other days (p>0.05). Desensitization using the clipper, a beauty tool, was faster than flooding in achieving stabilization. In conclusion, desensitization and flooding showed positive results on the stress relief and emotions of dogs during grooming, with respect to cosmetic fear response.

Gout is the most common crystal-associated arthropathy. Gout is caused by deposition of monosodium urate crystals within the joints, and it is often associated with hyperuricemia. Acute gout involves the first metatarsophalangeal joint (podagra) in approximately 50% of cases and its peak incidence occurs in middle age. Although the clinical features can help with making the diagnosis of gout, many inflammatory diseases such as cellulitis, pseudogout and septic arthritis can mimic or coexist with it. The definitive diagnosis requires polarized light microscopy of the fluid aspirated from the involved joint and this shows needle-shaped, negative birefringent monosodium urate crystals. However, joint aspiration can be technically difficult, and none of the conventional imaging modalities for gout specifically identifies the chemical composition of uric acid. The advent of Dual-Energy CT (DECT) is a noninvasive method that has the potential to confirm gout and monitor the response to treatment. DECT scan can show monosodium urate deposition by using color coding. The authors performed DECT scans for detecting uric acid deposition and confirming the gout noninvasively.

To elucidate the incidences and the clinical characteristics of glomerular diseases in our hospital, we reviewed the clinical records and histological findings of the 117 cases, which were diagnosed as one of the glomerular disease in renal biospy for about 6 years since 1991. In these 117 cases, 74 cases (63.2 %) fell into primary glomerulonephritis(GN), 18 cases (15.4%) into secondary GN, 2 cases (1.7 %) into end stage kidney, 4 cases (3.4%) into tubulointerstitial disease and the biopsy samples were inadequate for diagnosis in 19 cases. In primary glomerular diseases, most common pathologic diagnosis was IgA nephropathy (36.5 %}, followed by minimal change nephrotic syndrome (29.7%). The incidence of IgA nephropathy would be increased if we had biopsied every asymptomatic urinary abnormality (AUA) patients. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) . hepatitis B accounted for most of secondary GN in our cases. One case of progressive scleroderma was included in this secondary GN. Minimal change nephrotic syndrome (22 cases) was the most common cause of nephrotic syndrome, followed by membranous GN (9 cases) and IgA nephropathy (8 cases). 2 cases of primary amyloidosis were presented with nephrotic syndrome. Nephrotic syndrome as presenting symptom in our IgA nephropathy patients was higher than in other studies, which may be due to indication bias for renal biopsy. We suggest that renal biopsy should be done in adult nephrotic syndrome and in SLE, because various kind of glomerular diseases can develop nephrotic syndrome in adult, renal biopsy can affect the treatment and prognosis in each patients and renal biopsy also determines the extent of renal involvement in SLE on which the treatment depends. In AUA urinary patients, renal biopsy could be reserved for the patients who show declining of GFR or rising of proteinuria. Because IgA nephropathy account for most of AUA. and there is no specific treatment for IgA nephropathy, and renal biopsy in those cases is helpful in ruling out the patients who need no treatment.

We have retrospectively examined the relationship of serum albumin and creatinine in 96 hemodialysis patients to determine the risk factors for mortality. Other variables studied includied age, diabetes and dialysis time and frequency. Observed survival was computed by the Kaplan Meier method. Cox's proportional hazards model was used to determine risk predictors for mortality. Old age, diabetes, low level of creatinine, shorter dialysis time and less dialysis frequency were higher mortality risk predictors in hemodialysis patients. These findings suggest that adequate hemodialysis and improved nutrition are important in survival of patients maintained on hemodialysis.
