Diabetes is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, with atherosclerosis responsible for most associated morbidity and mortality. Atherosclerosis often causes acute thrombotic events through plaque rupture and formation of platelet-rich thrombi. The principal clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis are coronary artery disease, ischemic stroke, and peripheral arterial disease. Endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and low-grade inflammation are key features in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. Diabetes is also associated with hypercoaguable states and endothelial injury. Hyperactivated platelets at injured endothelial surfaces act together due to the increased availability of thrombotic precursors and diminished fibrinolysis. Advances in the understanding of the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis associated with diabetes have yielded new hypotheses regarding the links between risk factors and the cellular and molecular alterations that underlie cardiovascular disease. Recently, there has been increasing interest in utilizing novel biomarkers of cardiovascular disease risk that have the potential to be useful indicators for better risk assessment, diagnosis, and prognosis. However, to date, most conventional and emerging biomarkers have only modest predictive values, and there remains a need to identify additional biomarkers using new biological approaches. This review highlights the clinical implications of emerging biomarkers associated with cardiovascular disease in patients with diabetes and recent developments in new technologies for the identification of biomarkers. This study was used the Mesocosm which presumes the movement of the nutrient substance (especially PO<sub>4</sub>-P) of the wetland it was executed. After set up the Mesocosm inside the wetland and adding the PO<sub>4</sub>-P, Observationed the movement of the PO<sub>4</sub>-P follows at hour. It analyzed the factor which is the possibility of causing an effect in PO<sub>4</sub>-P consistency of the wetland - Flora, Zooplankton, Phytoplankton, Absorbing rate of Algae, Settling rate, Release rate. Before adding The Consistency of the PO<sub>4</sub>-P inside reed texture was average 3.44 mg/gDW, after adding it wad 2.91 mg/gDW with 36% reduced. The Algae is more sensitive than the plant in absorption of the nutrient. The Phytoplankton increased suddenly after PO<sub>4</sub>-P adding. After adding the PO<sub>4</sub>-P, almost there was not change of the Algae.

Background/Aims: In Korea, few studies have examined primary cardiac tumors, which have a reported incidence of 0.0017~0.19% in autopsy series. This study surveyed the status of primary cardiac tumors over the past 7 years in one region. Methods: A retrospective review examined all patients with primary cardiac tumors, except for confirmed thrombus, using hospital medical records from 2000 to 2006 at six community hospitals. Identified cases undergoing biopsy and surgery were selected for the study. Results: The operative mortality was 7.7%. Of the 71 patients (26 males) with identified primary cardiac tumors, 65 (91.5%) tumors were benign and 6 (8.5%) were malignant. The benign tumors were myxoma (78.9%), rhabdomyoma (4.2%), fibroelastoma (2.8%), fibroma (1.4%), and leiomyoma (1.4%). Two of the myxomas were present at multiple locations. The malignant tumors included sarcomas (67%) and lymphomas (33%). Most of the tumors were located in the left atrium (76%). The majority of patients presented with chest pain and dyspnea. During follow-up for an average of 26.8±21.3 months, all but one patient with benign tumors was alive; one myxoma patient died perioperatively (1.5%). Four of the patients with malignant tumors (67%) died. Conclusions: Cardiac myxomas and sarcomas were the most common primary benign and malignant tumors, respectively. Benign tumors had excellent postoperative survival rates, while malignant tumors had high mortality. (Korean J Med 79:271-276, 2010)

A chronic expanding hematoma (CEH) in the thorax is a rare and specific condition of chronic empyema. CEHs in the thorax are often associated with tuberculosis and/or previous surgical procedures. While the incidental detection of a pleural mass and dyspnea are common clinical manifestations, a few cases present with hemoptysis. We encountered a case of CEH in the thorax. This case is unique in that it developed without a prior history of tuberculosis or surgery and presented with massive hemoptysis accompanied by bronchopleural fistula. We report the third case of CEH in the thorax in Korea with a summary of the clinical characteristics of previous cases. (Tuberc Respir Dis 2008;65:216-221)

This survey was conducted to evaluate the microbial contamination level of butcher`s shops in Seoul, Korea. For microbial inspections, a total of 584 samples (146 cotton work gloves, 146 utensils and equipments, 154 beef samples, 138 pork samples) were collected from butcher`s shops. E. coli and pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Yersinia enterocolitica, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella spp., and E. coli O157:H7 were tested in the samples. As a result, the level of aerobic plate count (APC) ranged ≤104 CFU/cm2 from utensils and equipments, 101∼109 CFU/glove from cotton work gloves and ≤106 CFU/g from meat. The APC level of E. coli ranged ≤101 CFU/cm2 from utensils and equipments, ≤105 CFU/glove from cotton work gloves, and ≤103 CFU/g from meat, respectively. Staphylococcus aureus was detected in 2 beef samples, 1 pork sample, and 10 used cotton work gloves. Yersinia enterocolitica was detected in 3 beef samples, 1 pork sample, and 3 used cotton work gloves. Listeria monocytogenes was detected in 2 used cotton work gloves. In order to improve the sanitation status of butcher`s shops, application of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) or SSOP (Sanitation Standard Operating Procedure), regular hygiene education, and continuous monitoring for microorganisms will be required.
