Coxiella burnetii is the causative agent of Q fever which is a zoonosis occuring in both humans and animals worldwide. The purpose of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence of C. burnetii in Korean native goat in Gyeongnam province, Korea. A total of 1,365 goat blood samples from 273 farms in Gyeongnam province were collected between 2018 and 2019. Among them, 177 (13.0%) samples out of 71 (26.0%) farms were seropositive for C. burnetii by ELISA. Seroprevalence were 15.4% and 10.9% in 2018 and 2019, respectively. According to the region, seroprevalence in western, central, eastern, northern and southern areas of Gyeongnam province were 16.6%, 17.8%, 8.0%, 11.6% and 10.8%, respectively. Seroprevalence was increased with breeding scale (Head<10:7.0%, 10≤Head<50:8.7%, 50≤Head<100:13.6%, 100≤Head:28.8%). Seroprevalence according to the season showed highest in summer (18.9%) and lowest in winter (9.4%). These results indicated that C. burnetii infection is widespread among Korean native goats of Gyeongnam province in Korea and further study needs to prevent the circulation of other livestock with Korean native goat.

This study was performed to identify the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis in diarrhea feces of Korean native calves raised in Gimje, Jeollabuk-do, with a rapid diagnostic kit. The prevalence of both diseases were classified according to the age of calf, season of sampling period, and sampled farm where diarrheic calf is commonly observed. In diarrhea feces of 431 calves, cryptosporidiosis had a high incidence rate between 1 and 3 weeks of age, whereas giardiasis showed a high incidence between 4 and 6 weeks of age. It is thought that the incidence of protozoan diseases is markedly influenced by the calf’s postnatal age. Regarding with the sampling season, the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis in calves was significantly higher in spring and summer than in autumn and winter (P<0.05). Among the sampled farms where both diseases are commonly observed, cryptosporidiosis was more frequently detected than giardiasis in calves. Particularly, in farms where cryptosporidiosis is common, it tends to be a disease that is difficult to eradicate as it occurs continuously throughout the year. Hygiene management such as regular cleaning and disinfection of the livestock and the surrounding environments is considered necessary to reduce and prevent damage from these protozoal diseases.

Although many swine farms continuously vaccinated to sow to prevent Porcine epidemic diarrhea(PED), PED has occurred annually in swine herds in Jeonbuk province, Korea. In the present study, the small intestine and feces samples from 17 farms where severe watery diarrhea and death of newborn piglets occurred in 2019 were collected, amplified by RT-PCR and determined the complete nucleotide sequences of the spike (S) glycoprotein genes of nine Jeonbuk PEDV isolates. The spike (S) glycoprotein is an important determinant for molecular characterization and genetic relationship of PEDV. These nine complete S gene isolates were compared with other PEDV reference strains to identify the molecular diversity, phylogenetic relationships and antigenicity analysis. 9 field strains share 98.5∼100% homologies with each other at the nucleotide sequence level and 97.3∼100% homologies with each other at the amino acid level. The nine Jeonbuk PEDV isolates were classified into G2b group including a genetic specific signal, S-indels (insertion and deletion of S gene). In addition, comparisons the neutralizing epitopes of S gene between 9 field strains and domestic vaccine strains of Korea mutated 12-15 amino acids with SM-98-1 (G1a group) and mutated 0-3 amino acids with QIAP1401 (G2b group). Therefore, the development of G2b-based live vaccines will have to be expedited to ensure effective prevention of endemic PED in Korea. In addition, we will need to be prepared with periodic updates of preventive vaccines based on the PEDV variants for the re-emergence of a virulent strain.

Caseous lymphadenitis, caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis has been a predominant disease among small ruminants on farms, causing significant losses for farm producer in the larger part of goat rearing nations across the world, for over a century. However, the control measures have not been very effective due to the chronic and usually subclinical nature of the infection. This has caused significant financial losses due to chronic ill-thrift, carcass condemnation, decreased meat yields and low reproduction as well as animal welfare. The current status of caseous lymphadenitis, with updated reseach information to the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs, identification, prevalence, prevention and vaccination are delineated in the review.

A 23-month-old Holstein cattle showed excess salivation and reluctance of walking and suddenly died after forced sudden movements. Grossly, numerous fibrous adhesions were present within cranial abdominal cavity including the reticulum and diaphragm and thoracic cavity involving lungs, pericardial sac, and heart. A perforation made by a 10 cm-long sharp-ended wire was detected in the reticulum. Histopathologically, fibrous suppurative epicarditis and myocardial necrosis were observed. Fibrosis with neovascularization were found in lungs, spleen, and liver. And granulomatous reticulitis was observed. For differential diagnosis, no pathogenic bacteria were detected through microbiological tests and PCR results were also negative for bovine susceptible pathogenic antigens. Based on the gross and histopathological examination, we diagnosed this case as chronic traumatic pericarditis. Cattle are inquisitive and prone to swallow various kinds of metallic foreign bodies since they do not use their lips. Therefore, avoiding ingestion of metallic objects in animal feed and animal areas by careful environmental management of farms is required and farmers should give the adequate minerals and vitamins into the feeds not to lick or shallow foreign bodies in case of mineral deficiency. For veterinary practitioners, physical examination, blood tests, and diagnostic imaging (X-ray and Ultrasonography) are required for an exact diagnosis. Furthermore, placing the magnets in rumen would be effective for prophylactic administrations.

Rabbit infectious hemorrhagic fever has been reported in rabbits worldwide. The disease is also frequently reported on Korean rabbit farms, and the pathological study of 9 rabbits on such disease-occurring farms was attempted to identify the pathogen. Clinical signs were torticollis and ear ulceration. Most rabbit died with bloody nasal discharges. At necropsy, multiple hemorrhages and inflammation were observed in heart, lung, liver and uterus. The main histopathologic features were hemorrhagic suppurative meningoencephalitis, fibrinous bronchointerstitial pneumonia, bacteremia, liver cell necrosis, multifocal hemorrhages in kidney and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. The viral VP60 gene of RHDV was identified by Reverse Transcriptase PCR. Pasteurella multocida organisms were cultured, identified by biochemical test and serotyped as A by multiplex capsular typing PCR. In conclusion, the fatal hemorrhagic disease was due to combined infection with both RHDV and P. multocida in rabbits. To our knowledge, this is the first case report about co-infection with both RHDV and P. multocida in rabbits in Korea.

Q fever is a worldwide zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii. Domestic ruminants are considered to be major source of human infection. The aim of this survey was to investigate seroprevalence of C. burnetii in ruminants in Gwangju area. A total of 1,000 samples (serum and lactoserum) were collected from 987 Korean native cattle, 5 Korean native goats, 2 beef cattle, 6 bulk-tank milk from each dairy farm in Gwangju area from January to October 2020 and analyzed by ELISA. The seroprevalence of C. burnetii in bulk-tank milk from each dairy farms was 50.0%. Korean black goat and beef cattle had negative antibody test results for C. burnetii. The seroprevalence of C. burnetii in Korean native cattle in Gwangju area was 7.1% and was higher in female (7.8%) than in male (3.4%) (P=0.024). The seroprevalence of C. burnetii in Korean native cattle appeared to increase with age (3.8% in 1 year-old, 7.1% in 3 year-old, and 10.7% in more than 5 year-old) (P<0.001). The seroprevalence of C. burnetii of Korean native cattle increased in spring and May was the highest in particular (P<0.001). As the distribution and density of tick-habitat are expected to increase due to climate crisis, this survey highlights the need for monitoring C. burnetii in domestic ruminants, including surveillance of C. burnetii infection in people working for livestock industry.

The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial resistance among Pseudomonas (P.) aeruginosa isolated from dogs and cats. A total of 45 (6.2%) P. aeruginosa was isolated from 710 dogs and 21 cats with clinical signs. Resistance to one or more of the antimicrobials tested was observed in 26 (57.8%) P. aeruginosa. Resistance to cefepime was the most frequent (44.4%), followed by ofloxacin (22.2%), levofloxacin (17.8%), norfloxacin (8.9%), ciprofloxacin (6.7%), ceftazidime, aztreonam, colistin, polymixin B and gentamicin (4.4%, respectively), while resistance to piperacillin/tazobactam, imipenem, tobramycin and amikacin was 2.2%, respectively. All isolates were susceptibility to doripenem and meropenem. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing should be a crucial step in selection of appropriate antimicrobial therapy in veterinary medicine. Also, the prudent use of antimicrobials and continuous monitoring for companion animals are required.

Senecavirus A (SVA), previously known as Seneca Valley virus, can cause vesicular disease and neonatal losses in pigs that is clinically indistinguishable from foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). After the first case report in Canada in 2007, it had been restrictively identified in North America including United States. But, since 2015, SVA emerged outside North America in Brazil, and also in several the Asian countries including China, Thailand, and Vietnam. Considering the SVA occurrence in neighboring countries, there has been a high risk that Korea can be introduced at any time. In particular, it is very important in terms of differential diagnosis in the suspected case of vesicular diseases in countries where FMD is occurring. So far, several different molecular detection methods for SVV have been published but not validated as the reference method, yet. In this study, seven different molecular methods for detecting SVA were evaluated. Among them, the method by Flowler et al, (2017) targeted to 3D gene region with the highest sensitivity and no cross reaction with other vesicular disease agents including FMDV, VSV and SVD, was selected and applied further to antigen surveillance of SVA. A total of 245 samples of 157 pigs from 61 farms submitted for animal disease diagnose nationwide during 2018 were tested all negative. In 2018, no sign of SVA occurrence have been confirmed in Korea, but the results of the surveillance for SVA needs to be continued and accumulated at a high risk of SVA in neighboring countries.
