        웹기반 및 모바일 블로깅을 활용한 웹 환경에서의 쓰기 효과

        This study aims to examine the effects of web-based and mobile bloggings on Korean learners` English writing. A total of 28 university students were assigned to two different groups according to different types of writing settings. They wrote five essays, and they were given one week to write each essay. A pretest was given in Week 7, and the treatments lasted for 7 weeks from Week 8 through Week 14. A posttest was administered in Week 15 to assess the learners` writing progress. The results of the posttest showed that the mobile blogging group performed significantly better than the web-based blogging group regarding holistic assessment. However, the mobile blogging group did not perform significantly better than the web-based blogging group when T-unit was analyzed. Moreover, no significant effect was identified in the posttest when dependent clause ratio was analyzed. Thus, no significant differences were observed in syntactic complexity between the two different groups. In conclusion, it may be inferred that the mobile blogging is more effective than the web-based blogging in promoting learners` writing ability in holistic assessment.

        공학인증 프로그램에서 플라잉팝콘을 이용한 효과적인 영어어휘학습

        Within the ABEEK program, it is a vital task to plan an English course as a liberal arts curriculum suitable to the learning styles of engineering majors. This study aims to find an effective way to promote vocabulary learning for the engineering majors in a university level. For this purpose, this paper examines the effectiveness of Web-based vocabulary learning program called Flying Popcorn and cooperative learning activities on vocabulary acquisition. The subjects were 78 Korean EFL students in the ABEEK program. The study was conducted throughout two semesters employing two variables: Flying Popcorn and group/pair work. The results show that the Web-based vocabulary learning program is more effective than the traditional vocabulary learning methods. It was also found that the subjects preferred the pair work to the group work regarding the type of collaboration.

        Early English Education in Korea - With Reference to CPH and Bilingual Education

        English has become one of the regular subjects in elementary schools in Korea as of March 1997. And now, a growing number of parents are more concerned than ever about their children"s English education. At present, English is taught to children from third grade and on, but increasing number of children are taught English at private preschools or at private institutions called "HakWon" before they enter elementary schools, and as a result there would be a big gap in-between. This study attempts to approach this problem by reviewing the relevant theories and examining the current status of early English education in Korea. Although the Critical Period Hypothesis (CPH), one of the major theoretical basis for starting English education in elementary schools in Korea, is still a controversial issue, fully convincing counter-example has not been presented. And many recent researches support the "younger-is-better" Position in second language acquisition, at least in the area of pronunciation. And considering the myths about bilingualism will enable us to dispel some common misconceptions and may reveal the possibility of adapting effective bilingual programs to early English education in Korea In fact, many private English institutions for children have already implemented bilingual immersion programs. Based on these, it seems desirable to start English education earlier in Korea from preschools in both public and private.

        The Relative Effectiveness of Authentic Web-based Homework and Pedagogical Dictation Homework on Enhancing EFL Learners` Listening Performance

        The present study examines the effects of authentic web-based homework vs. pedagogical dictation homework on EFL learners` listening performance. A total of 75 university students were randomly assigned to three different groups: Group A (web-based homework), Group B (dictation homework), and Group C (control). The listening tasks in the classroom were kept constant in the three groups. In addition to the listening exercises in the textbook, Group A had authentic web-based, or Internet-based, homework and Group B had pedagogically tailored dictation homework each week throughout the semester. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and post hoc test. The experimental groups which had extra listening homework outperformed the control group on the posttest. Moreover, as hypothesized, the results revealed that authentic web-based homework group improved significantly more than the pedagogical dictation homework group. The overall results of this study showed greater gains for the web-based homework group in terms of both performance and improvement, which reflects the beneficial role of authentic listening materials on enhancing EFL learners` listening performance.

        영어 학습자의 읽기 능력 향상에 효과적인 과제 유형 연구

        본 논문은 다른 종류의 읽기 과제가 외국어 학습자의 읽기 능력 발달에 미치는 영향을 ‘기초영어’ 수업을 수강하는 138 명의 대학생을 대상으로 고찰하였다. 과제의 유형에 따라 다섯 그룹으로 나뉘었고 동일한 교재를 사용하여 같은 방식으로 수업을 받았다. 다섯 분반 모두 매주 해석 과제를 하였고 네 개의 실험반은 그 외에 각각 들으면서 읽기, 음독, 듣기, 묵독 과제를 매주 실시하였다. Ancova 결과 소리내어 읽기, 들으면서 읽기, 듣기 분반 순으로 높은 점수를 보였다. 그리고 소리내어 읽기 분반이 묵독 분반보다, 들으면서 읽기 분반이 듣기 분반보다 더 높은 성취도를 보였다. 이는 외국어 학습자의 독해능력 발달을 위해 두 가지 이상의 언어기능이 결합된 통합적인 과제가 효과적일 수 있음을 시사한다고 볼 수 있다. This study examined the effects of different modes of weekly homework on EFL learners` reading performance. It aimed to determine which mode of reading homework is most effective for developing learners` reading proficiency. The participants in the research were 138 low-intermediate level college students taking ‘Basic English’ course. While all students used the same textbooks and followed the same procedure in the classroom, each was randomly assigned into five different groups based on different types of homework. The control group was restricted to translation homework each week. In addition to translation, the learners in the other four treatment groups were assigned reading-while-listening, reading out loud, listening only, and silent reading homework, respectively. The analysis of covariate (ANCOVA) results revealed that the reading out loud group showed the greatest performance followed by reading-while-listening group and listening only group after controlling for the pretest scores. Furthermore, the reading out loud group performed significantly better than the silent reading group, and the reading-while-listening group outperformed listening only group. These findings seem to support the current trend toward skill integration, namely, Brown`s (2007) notion that reading ability will be developed best in association with other language skills and integrating two or more skills will lead to better reinforcement.(Paichai University)

      • The Subset Principle and UG in L2 Acquisition : the acquisition of reflexives by Korean students learning English

        The Subset Principle and UG in L2 Acquisition: the acquisition of reflexives by Korean students learning English. The fact that children learn which setting is appropriate for the language they are acquiring from the positive evidence rather than from negative evidence suggests that L1 acquisition should be achieved with positive evidence only. However, children may encounter a situation where they need negative evidence for disconfirmation. To overcome s problem, a learning principle called Subset Principle is proposed, and its potential application can be illustrated through a parameter-setting framework for Binding Principle called Governing Category Parameter(GCP) proposed by Wexler and Manzini(1987). This study examines whether the Subset Principle operates in L2 acquisition of reflexives by Korean students learning English as in L1, and if not what other factors are involved. The result shows that the Subset Principle does not seem to operate in their L2 acquisition, causing students to create interlanguage grammar placed somewhere between the superset L1 and subset L2. This suggests that teachers should provide sufficient and adequate evidence to help that resetting to take place successively.

        교원의 교원능력개발평가 결과, 인구학적 특성과 전문성 인식의 관계

        This study aimed to provide useful information by investigating the relationships between the results of teacher evaluation for professional development, teachers’ demographic characteristics, and their perception of expertise. Among those who participated in the survey asking teachers’ perception of the 2014 teacher evaluation for professional development, the data from 1,622 teachers in the upper and lower limits of one standard deviation of teacher peer evaluation and student satisfaction were used. Study findings were as follows. First, statistically significant and positive correlations existed between teacher evaluation results and teachers’perception of expertise. Second, female teachers, those whose career spanned 5-15 years, elementary teachers perceived their expertise higher than those of male teachers, those whose careers did not span 5-15 years, and middle and high school teachers. Third, mean scores of expertise perception of teachers who had high scores on peer evaluation and student satisfaction were higher than those of other groups. Last, providing information to parents and appropriate evaluation were the key factors distinguishing those who had high scores on teacher evaluation and student satisfaction from those had high scores on teacher evaluation and low scores on student satisfaction. In addition, providing information to parents was the key factor differentiating those who had high scores on teacher evaluation and student satisfaction from those who had low scores on both teacher evaluation and student satisfaction. The significance of these study results was discussed along with limitations and suggestions for future research studies.

      • Vibrio fluvialis에 의한 위장관염 1 예

        V. fluvialis는 해양 및 담수 서식 세균으로서 드물게 인체에서 위장감염을 일으킨다. 현재까지 외국에서 보고된 예는 있으나 국내에 보고된 예는 없었다. 저자들은 여름철에 조개(고막)를 먹은 후 심한 복통과 설사 및 탈수증 등의 증상이 1주일간 지속된 55세의 간경변 남자 환자에서 대변배양 검사상 확진된 V. fluvialis에 의한 위장관염 1예를 적극적인 항생제 치료를 하였으나, 간경변 합병증으로 사망한 증례를 경험하였기에 이에 보고하는 바이다. V. fluvialis is a gram-negative, oxidase-producing, halophilic bacterium. It is normally found in coastal waters and seafoods. There have been a few reports on Vibrio fluvialis gastroenteritis in other countries, whereas as there has been no previous report of V. fluvialis infections in Korea. Reports from other countries showed that V. fluvialis was isolated mostly from infants and children. We experienced a race case of gastroenteritis due to V. fluvialis in a 55-year-old man with liver cirrhosis who ate an ark shell. He was admitted due to mild abdominal pain and severe watery diarrhea followed by rapidly progressive dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and hepatorenal syndrome for a week. This patient was not improved by intensive care and antibiotic therapy.
