Tetanus is a bacterial infection by Clostridium tetani. Its neurotoxin causes spastic paralysis and autonomic dysfunction. Intrathecal infusion of baclofen has been suggested as a pertinent treatment for generalized spasm. Our case describes a patient who had a severe generalized form of tetanus, and was effectively treated with intrathecal baclofen infusion. He showed cerebral and brainstem dysfunction during baclofen infusion, which were reversed without sequelae when baclofen was discontinued.

Effects of Persimmon-Vinegar on Lipid Metabolism and Alcohol Clearance in Chronic Alcohol-Fed Rats

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of persimmon-vinegar supplementation on lipid pro-files, carnitine levels, and alcohol clearance in chronically alcoholic rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups:the normal control group (NC), the ethanol-administered group (EC) (4 g/kg of body weight), the ethanol plus low-dose per-simmon-vinegar-administered group (EVL) (1 mL/kg of body weight), and the ethanol plus high-dose persimmon-vinegar-administered group (EVH) (2 mL/kg of body weight). In this study, we found that persimmon-vinegar supplementation sig-nificantly decreased serum triglyceride and total cholesterol and liver total cholesterol levels compared to those of the ECgroup. The liver nonesterified carnitine level was significantly elevated in the persimmon-vinegar-administered groups as com-pared to that of the EC group. The blood ethanol concentration tended to be the lowest in the EVH group. There was a trendfor the level of hepatic acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase mRNA to be decreased and hepatic carnitine palmitoyltransferase-ImRNA to be increased with increasing doses of persimmon-vinegar. These results suggest that supplementation of persim-mon-vinegar prevents metabolic disorders induced by chronic administration of alcohol.

한국어 학습자의 정의적 요인과 전화한국어 만족도 연구

목적 본 연구는 전화한국어를 이용한 한국어 학습자들의 만족도를 알아보고자 하였다. 방법 이를 위해 전화한국어를 이용한 한국어 학습자 39명을 대상으로 전화한국어의 만족도를 알아보기 위한 설문을 조사하였다. 전화한국어를 이용한 후 가장 큰 효과를 본 언어적 영역이 무엇인지 조사하여 다중 응답 빈도 분석을 실시하였다. 그 이후 학습자들의개인적 요인인 불안, 흥미, 태도, 효능감과 만족도의 상관관계를 살펴보았다. 그 이후 회귀 분석을 통해 만족도와 가장 높은 상관관계를 가진 요인과 만족도가 어느 정도의 영향력이 있는지 파악하였다. 결과 설문 결과, 학습자들은 ‘듣기, 읽기, 말하기’ 영역 중에서 ‘말하기’가 가장 많이 향상되었다고 느끼며, 말하기 중에서도 발음 부분에 가장 많은 도움을 받았다고 응답하였다. 또한 학습자들의 개인별적 요인 중 효능감과 만족도와의 상관 관계가 가장 높았으며, 효능감이 만족도에 영향력을 준다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 결론 이를 통해 전화한국어라는 플랫폼(platform)은 학습자들의 말하기 영역 중에서도 발음의 학습에 가장 도움이 된다는 것을알 수 있었다. 또한 학습자들의 효능감이 높을수록 전화한국어의 만족도가 높은 것으로 보아, 이후 학습자들의 수업에서 효능감을높이는 교수가 이루어져야 함을 미루어 알 수 있었다.

유정성 효과가 사동문 습득에 미치는 영향: 영어권 한국어 학습자들을 대상으로

This study addresses how English speakers who are learning Korean acquire Korean causatives that mostly involve animate subjects. 30 native speakers (NK) and 60 English-L1 learners (29 Intermediate level learners and 31 High level learners) participated in the experiment. Participants were required to undertake the Acceptability Judgement Task to examine how English-L1 learners acquire the knowledge of the causative structure ‘-key hata’ according to the types of animate subjects and inanimate subjects. The result shows there is no explicit difference among the three groups of participants in the usage of causative sentences with animate subjects. However, Korean speakers and English-L1 learners have different tendency of using inanimate subjects in causative sentences due to the influence of English. This observation implies explicit grammatical explanation is needed for learners to identify the preference of animate subjects in Korean causative sentences. (Sungkyul University)

2002년 7월 20일은 귀여운 딸, 예진이의 두돌이 되는 날이다. 비록 많이 갖추어서 생일잔치를 해주진 못했지만, 식구들과 학사교구장님, 간사님을 모시고 즐거운 저녁식사를 하면서 예진이의 생일을 축하해 주었다. 축복을 받은 지 얼마나 지났는지, 그 햇수도 잊어버릴 만큼 이제는 끈끈한 가시버시 정으로 맺어진 우리 부부에게도 행복과 더불어 시련도 있었다.

Image Analysis of a Lateral Flow Strip Sensor for the Detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7

Purpose: This study was performed to develop a lateral flow strip sensor for the detection of pathogenic Escherichia coli O157:H7 in various samples. Also, feasibility of using an image analysis method to improve the interpretation of the strip sensor was evaluated. Methods: The lateral flow strip sensor has been fabricated based on nitrocellulose lateral-flow membrane. Colloidal gold and E. coli O157:H7 antibodies were used as a tag and a receptor, respectively. Manually spotted E. coli O157:H7 antibody and anti-mouse antibody on nitrocellulose membrane were used as test and control dots,respectively. Feasibility of the lateral flow strip sensor to detect E. coli O157:H7 were evaluated with serially diluted E. coli O157:H7 cells in PBS or food samples. Test results of the lateral flow strip sensor were measured with an image analysis method. Results: The intensity of the test dot started to increase with higher concentration of the cells were introduced. The sensitivities of the sensor were both 104 CFU/mL Escherichia coli O157:H7 spiked in PBS and in chicken meat extract,respectively. Conclusions: The lateral flow strip sensor and image analysis method could detect E. coli O157:H7 in 20 min,which is significantly quicker than conventional plate counting method.

체육 전공 대학생과 비체육 전공 대학생의 쓰기 비교 연구

목적: 본 연구의 목적은 체육 전공 대학생(이하, 체대생)과 비체육 전공 대학생(이하, 비체대생)의 설명적 글쓰기에 유의한 차이가 있는지 살펴보는 것이다. 방법: 본 연구의 연구 대상은 강원도 소재 대학의 체대생 40명과 비체대생 40명이고, 설명문 작문 과제를 수행하도록 하였다. 작문 자료에 대한 분석은 ‘내용’, ‘구성’, ‘적절성’, ‘정확성’, ‘어문 규정’의 하위 영역으로 나누어 수행하였다. 두 집단의 쓰기에 대한 분석적 평가 점수의 차는 독립표본 t-검정으로 확인하였다. 결과: 첫째, 체대생과 비체대생의 작문은 분석적 평가의 모든 항목에서 유의한 차이가 없었다. 둘째, 전공과상관없이 설명적 글쓰기의 장르적 속성에 대한 이해와 글의 구조, 어문 규정에 대한 지식이 부족함을 알 수있었다. 결론: 글쓰기 능력은 체육 전공 여부에 따라 차이를 가지지 않았으며 이는 체육 전공생들은 쓰기 능력이 좋지 않다는 선입견과 편견이 타당하지 않음을 보여준다. 또한 전공과 관계없이 현 학부생들에게 설명문의 장르적 속성과 글의 구조, 어문 규범에 대한 교육이 필요함을 확인하였다. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine whether there are significant differences in explanatory writing between university students majoring in physical education (hereafter, PE majors) and those not majoring in physical education (hereafter, non-PE majors). Methods: The study subjects were 40 PE majors and 40 non-PE majors from a university in Gangwon Province, who were given an explanatory writing task. The analysis of the writing samples was conducted in the subdomains of 'content', 'structure', 'appropriateness', 'accuracy', and 'conformity to language norms'. Differences in analytical evaluation scores between the two groups were assessed using an independent samples t-test. Results: First, there were no significant differences between the writing of PE majors and non-PE majors in any of the analytical evaluation categories. Second, participants with lower writing scores, regardless of major, showed a lack of understanding of the genre characteristics of explanatory writing, as well as deficiencies in the structure of their writing and knowledge of language norms. Conclusion: Writing ability did not differ based on whether students were PE majors or not, which challenges the stereotype that PE majors have poor writing skills. Additionally, it was confirmed that education on the genre characteristics of explanatory writing, writing structure, and language norms is necessary for current undergraduates, regardless of their major.
