The Juam reservoir, hydrological investigations on the catchment environment and pollutants inflow have been carried out simultaneously. The average COD in 1992 observed in Juam reservoir was 2.3㎎/ℓ, and reached to 2.9㎎/ℓ which is increased 0.6㎎/ℓ for 10 yeas. Following this trend, the water quality is expected to deteriorate down to the second-grade water quality exceeding the 3㎎/ℓ limit. In terms of chl-a, which is closed related with COD(correlation between COD and Chi-a, y=0.0732x+2.5953 ; r2=0.8141), the concentration exceeding the value of 46.5㎎/㎥ will not guarantee the water quality better than 3rd-grade drinking water resource. This result will help control the algal growth in the future by taking into account the expected value as a monitoring target.

The reduction of organic loading in waste water is the one of the chief purposes of waste water treatment processes. In this study, we measured the movement of organic matter continuously during the treatment process and monitored its concentration by using online TOC analyzer. Using this method, we attempted to evaluate the effectiveness organic matter management using with a online TOC analyzer. We also attempted to develop waste water treatment monitoring technology. Wastewater treatment plants that processed waste from basic petrochemical compound manufacturing facilities using chemical and biological treatments, that resulted in acidic or alkaline waste waters were investigated. Two kinds of inlet waters and one kind of mixing water were studied to monitor the movement of organic matter. Waste water influx and settling tank, aeration tank, and filter were used to monitor three kinds of water remotely. Laboratory and online measurement results were compared periodically to verify the reliability of the test results. After real-time monitoring, the movement of organic materials in inlet water and the impact of organic matter on loading changes were verified during the waste water treatment process. This monitoring was carried out twice over six weeks. The first attempt focused on quality control and adjustment of the measurement conditions and the second one focused on the actual monitoring. Due to insufficient pH control due to the influx of unknown alkaline samples, abnormal results were estimated in the first attempt, and reliable results were only obtained in the second attempt. More than 10 times the expected amount of abnormal results were obtained ; these can be attributed to high wastewater tank cleaning and process work. In conclusion, we were able to determine the effectiveness of real-time monitoring of organic matter movement in waste water treatment plants and suggest improvements for long term monitoring and automatic treatment of waste water.

In analysis of total organic carborn (TOC), efficiency of organic oxidation is critical. There are two most well-known methods to oxidize TOC in the analysis. They are the thermo-oxidation method, and the UV-persulfate oxidation. In the thermo-oxidation method, organics in water samples is thermally oxidized to CO2 which is sequentially analyzed. In the UV-persulfate oxidation, organic material in water samples is photo-oxidized in the presence of persulfate. In this study, oxidation efficiencies of these two different methods for TOC quantification were compared by applying them to a number of water samples; some of them contained easily degradable organic carbon and some of them did hardly-degradable organic carbons. As a result, the TOC values quantified by the UV-persulfate method were about 10-20% smaller than those quantified by the thermo-oxidation method. When the water samples with large amount of organics were analyzed for TOC, the difference became larger.

Jehovah's Witness comprise a unique obstetric population. Their refusal of blood stems from an interpretation of a literal translation of the Bible, and it is this belief that puts them at an increased risk of morbidity and mortality if hemorrhage occurs. We report two cases of a Jehovah's Witness who bled massively due to obstetric hemorrhage, refused blood transfusion and had profound anemia. The patients were treated with recombinant human erythropoietin, parenteral iron and oxygen. And they were treated on an intensive care unit with intermittent positive pressure ventilation. We reviewed with literature considering the therapy for acutely anemic patients who refuse transfusion to decrease the duration of the most severe anemia.
