Development of Microbial Fuel Cells Using Proteus vulgaris

Microbial fuel cells comprising the microorganism P. vulgaris, thionin as a mediator, and various mono- and disaccharides in an anodic compartment have been developed. A cathodic compartment containing a Pt electrode and Fe$(CN)_6^{3-}$ was separated from an anode by the Nafion membrane. From absorbance-time measurements, it was found that the absorbance of thionin was not altered by the addition of P. vulgaris, even in the presence of sugars. However, thionin was effectively reduced when P. vulgaris was present. These results differ substantially from the case of safranine O, a phenazine-derivative, indicating that thionin takes up electrons during the metabolic oxidation processes of carbohydrates. Maximum fuel cell efficiency was observed at 37 $^{\circ}C$, optimum temperature for the growth of P. vulgaris, and 0.5 V cell voltage was obtained, which indicates that the metabolism of the microorganism directly affects the efficiency. Thionin concentration was closely related to cell performance. When the charging-discharging characteristics were tested with glucose, galactose, sucrose, maltose, and trehalose as carbon sources, galactose was found to give the highest coulombic efficiency. Cell performance was almost fully recovered with only small degradation when glucose and sucrose were used in the repetitive operation. Current was maintained nearly twice as long for sucrose than in the case of glucose.
사례 비교분석을 통한 CM 적용 다양화 방안 - 발주자 특성 및 사업특성을 중심으로 -

1996년 국내에 CM 제도가 도입된 이후 지금까지 많은 발전을 이루어 왔고, 그 수요와 계약 또한 꾸준히 증가하고 있다. 또한 향후 CM 시장은 미래 성장 가능성이 있다는 점에서 CM 산업이 지금보다 한 단계 발전하고 해외 경쟁력 향상을 위해서는 발주자의 요구사항과 프로젝트 특성을 반영한 다양한 CM 적용을 위해 산업 공동의 노력이 필요하다. 이에 본 연구는 4가지의 다양한 CM 적용 형태별 사례들을 '업무비중' 및 '업무심도'를 업무기능을 중심으로 분석하고, 사례별로 CM '시장유형' 및 '업무형태'별 유형을 정의하였다. 사례 비교 분석 결과, 각 사례별로 CM 시장 및 적용 업무 유형별 업무 비중과 심도는 다양하게 나타났고, 국내 공공 사례에서 국내 민간 사례, 그리고 해외 민간 사례로 갈수록 시공단계의 품질관리 중심에서 기획, 설계관리, 공정관리 등 사업초기 단계 업무들의 비중과 심도가 높아지면서 전 생애주기 단계에 걸쳐 교과서적인 CM 업무를 수행한 것으로 나타난다. 그러나 현재 대부분의 국내 공공 CM 사업은 시공단계의 감리 업무에 집중된 제도로 인해 CM 적용 다양화를 위한 전 생애주기관점에서 기술경쟁력 강화에 어려움을 겪고 있다는 문제점을 도출하였다. 이에 본 연구는 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해 제도, 산업, 그리고 기업차원에서 CM 적용 다양화 방안을 제시하였다. Domestic CM market has continued to grow since the enactment of CM policies in 1996. In addition, future CM market is forecasted to have potential high growth. Therefore, it is necessary to apply various CM business models reflecting the owner's requirements and characteristics in order to improve in the CM industry and to strengthen the competitiveness in the overseas construction market. In this context, the purpose of this study is to suggest strategies of various CM applications based on comparison of 4 cases analyzed by 'business weight' and 'business depth' in terms of business function as well as by the types of 'CM market' and 'CM practice'. Result of this comparative analysis shows that each case presents differences in terms of type, business weight, and business depth of CM practice. However, domestic public CM services are currently being challenged to strengthen capability throughout the project life-cycle against the limitation of government's CM policies focused on the construction supervision. 사업관리 관점의 FEED 업무 프로세스 구조 및 항목 평가 - 화력발전소를 중심으로 -

FEED (Front End Engineering and Design) is the key area that determines the competitiveness of procurement and construction in the EPC contracts especially in terms of the added value. Nevertheless, previous researches in FEED have been limited to the process and deliverable of design work or the particular management business function (e.g. System Engineering, collaboration, information etc.). In this context, the purpose of this study is to propose a comprehensive FEED structure and its functions from the project management perspective throughout the whole project life-cycle for thermal power plants. Proposed FEED business procedures are classified into three levels; First level is the classification of FEED business phases, the second level defines major FEED management functions, and the third level is detailed FEED functions. A survey using proposed FEED functions and assessment variable was conducted in order to analyze the current status and the areas for future improvement. It is expected that the proposed structure, functions, and evaluation methodology for FEED management will contribute to effective practice of FEED as well as to improvement of competitive capability for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies. 해외 플랜트 사업에서의 고부가가치를 창출하기 위해서는 기획 타당성조사, 프로젝트종합관리, FEED 및 기본설계 등 분야의 기술경쟁력 강화가 시급하다. 특히, FEED 업무는 프로젝트 전체에 대한 영향력이 절대적이고, 또한 기자재 및 패키지 산업의 경쟁력 강화에도 결정적 역할을 한다. 그럼에도 불구하고, FEED 관련 선행연구들은 설계업무 중심의 프로세스 및 성과물을 위한 연구가 대부분이며, 프로젝트 전체에 영향을 미치는 관리적 관점의 FEED 업무에 대한 연구는 미흡한 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 발전플랜트 중 화력발전소를 대상으로 사업관리 관점의 FEED 업무 프로세스 구조 및 항목을 제안하였다. 도출된 FEED 관리 업무는 3개의 레벨로 나누어진 계층적 구조를 가지고 있으며, 업무 항목에 대한 전문가 검증을 실시하였다. 또한 FEED 관리 업무에 대한 평가지표별 평가를 통해 결과를 분석한 결과 설계 중심의 업무들은 역량이 높지만 중요도가 높은 관리적 관점의 FEED 업무들의 역량은 부족한 것으로 나타났다. 그러므로 본 연구에서 제안한 FEED 관리업무 프로세스 구조는 FEED 역량 강화를 위한 가이드라인이 될 것이라 기대한다.

1) 목적(Objectives):The warm needle acupuncture techniques (WNAT) combines the acupuncture effects and heat generated by moxibustion. Although stainless steel needles have been used empirically for WNAT, stainless steel needle has extremely low thermal conductivity and may not deliver designable heat to acupuncture points. The present study compared thermal conductivity of several types of needles made from iron, silver or stainless steel and developed a method enhancing thermal conduction in stainless needle. 2) 방법(Methods):We measured temperatures reaching at 1cm or 2.5 cm from moxa using a digital thermometer (DT-3891F, CEM, Shenzhen, China). and the types of iron, silver or stainless steel needles were compared. Effects of insulation paints on thermal conduction of stainless steel needles were also explored. 3) 결과(Results) 및 결론(Conclusions):Silver needle and traditional needle showed high thermal conductivity while marked heat loss was seen in stainless steel needles. Objectives:This study aimed to investigate the factors affecting the quality of life(QOL) of community-dwelling elderly with cognitive impairment Methods:This was a community-based, cross-sectional study that included 490 elderly subjects aged ≥60 years. Subjects completed a questionnaire that encompassed sociodemographic characteristics, health behavior, and chronic medical illness. Korean MMSE in the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer’s Disease(CERAD) assessment packet(MMSE-KC), the Korean version of Quality of Life-Alzheimer’s Disease(KQOL-AD) and the Short Form of Geriatric Depression Scale(SGDS) were also evaluated. Cognitive impairment was defined as having a test scores 1.5 SD below MMSE-KC norms adjusted for age, gender, and education. A stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was performed to determine factors associated with QOL. Results:The participants were allocated into cognitive impairment group(mean age=73.07, N=127) and no cognitive impairment group(mean age=72.51, N=363). The mean score for self-rated KQOL-AD was 26.45 in the former and 28.62 in the latter. The SGDS score(β=−0.741, p<0.001) was significantly associated with QOL in the former. SGDS score(β=−0.711, p<0.001), education(β=0.136, p<0.001), and living conditions(β=0.117, p=0.001) were factors significantly associated with QOL in the latter. Conclusion:Self-rated symptoms of depression were significantly associated with QOL in both groups of community- dwelling elderly. Thus, appropriate psychiatric management of depression in elderly is needed to enhance QOL.
