A Questionnaire Survey of Amur Gorals in the DMZ of Gangwon Province, South Korea

This questionnaire survey was conducted to obtain basic information about the Amur goral with the cooperation and assistance of the Korean army in the demilitarized zone (DMZ) of Gangwon province, South Korea in June 2004. Most of the Amur gorals were observed for less than 30 minutes at one time and they formed groups of 2-4 individuals. They appeared mostly in spring and summer, preferred deciduous and mixed forests, and were found in stony slopes, grasslands and valleys. To understand the ecology of Amur gorals, further research on the behaviour and habitat use pattern is necessary. However, there is still no monitoring system for Amur gorals in the DMZ. The development of an action plan based on field data is needed for the conservation and protection of that species in the Korean DMZ.
도로로부터 거리가 다른 지역에서 번식기 조류군집의 차이

도로의 건설로 인해 산림생태계의 단절이 발생한 백두대간의 진부령, 진고개, 삽당령, 백복령, 화방재, 이화령, 덕산재, 여원재 등 8개 국도 지역에서 번식기 조류군집을 대상으로 2002년 4월부터 6월까지의 기간동안 도로로부터 거리가 다른 지역별 번식기 조류군집의 특성을 파악하였다. 도로로부터 가까운 지역보다 먼지역에서 관찰된 종수와 개체수가 많았다. 또한 길드 구조의 분석 결과 도로의 인접지역이 도로로부터 멀리 떨어져 있는 지역보다 나무구멍 둥지자원과 수관층 먹이자원을 이용하는 조류의 종수와 개체수가 적었다. 이는 도로의 건설로 인해 조류의 서식지 환경이 변화하게 되고 그 결과 조류군집 구조에 영향을 주는 것으로 판단된다. This study was conducted to clarify the influence of national road construction on breeding bird community from April to June 2002 in 8 fragmented forest areas of Baekdudaegan mountain ranges, Korea. There were more observed birds in 50∼100m areas than in 50m areas from road. Guild structures were different between both areas. Number of species and individuals belong to hole nesting and canopy foraging guilds were lower in 50m areas than in 50∼100m areas from roads. Habitat structure of breeding bird community would be changed by road construction.

This study was conducted to identify the road effect on small rodent populations within fragmented forest areas around the road from June to September 2002, in 9 study sites of Baekdugdaegan mountains, Korea. Two species of small rodents, Korean field mouse Apodemus peninsulae and striped field mouse Apodemus agrarius, were captured in this study. Korean field mouse preferred forest area, and striped field mouse generally has been found edge area around road. Mean body weight of Korean field mouse was significantly different, but that of striped field mouse was not between both distance from road. Korean field mouse is forest-dwelling species and their distribution is limited in forest area. In contrast, striped field mouse has wide distributional range around road. The effects of road is different in each small rodent species and their habitat preferences.

This study was conducted to estimate population size and investigate habitat characteristics for the conservation and management of Amur goral Nemorhaedus caudatus raddeanus in DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) of Gangwon Province in South Korea from November 2003 to May 2004. The Amur gorals counting were carried out by assistance of military soldiers who guards the southern boundary of DMZ. Four hundred sixty individuals were estimated as total population size in DMZ of Gangwon Province. Deciduous forest, rocky area and coniferous forest were dominant land cover types in habitat of Amur goral. DMZ and its vicinity of Gangwon Province are very important areas for the conservation of this species. It is needed to establish management plan for the conservation of Amur goral and their habitats in DMZ.
Importance of taxonomic research for biodiversity of Korea

In 2012, the NIBR started publishing the Journal of Species Research (JSR) as an international specialized journal of biological taxonomy focusing on taxonomic research. JSR Volume 5 Number 3, to be published in October 2016, has been planned as a ‘Special Edition on New and Unrecorded Species of Invertebrates in Korea’, and so it consists of the reports of 149 new and unrecorded invertebrate species (including protozoa) discovered in Korea. In future, the JSR should further accelerate the use of such methods to generate valid data for new species and effectively support the compilation of ‘National List of Species of Korea’. In this way, it will contribute significantly to enrich for biodiversity in Korea.
Differences in Field Sign Abundance of Mammal Species Around the Road in Baekdudaegan Mountains

This study was conducted to obtain the information of distribution, protection and management for mammal species in fragmented forest areas around the road from June 2002 to May 2003 in 9 study sites of Baekdugdaegan mountains, Korea. Field signs of twelve mammals, moles Molera robusta, Korean hares Lepus coreanus, Manchurian chipmunk Tamias sibiricus, red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris, Korean racoon dogs Nyctereutes procyonoides, Siberian weasels Mustela sibirica, badgers Meles meles, otters Lutra lutra, Bengal cats Felis bengalensis, wild boars Sus scrofa, water deer Hydropotes inermis and roe deer Capreolus pygargus were recorded in this study. There were no differences in total number of species between 50 m areas and 50-100 m areas from road in snow and non-snow season. Number of mammals' field signs were different in non-snow season between both areas. Red squirrels and Siberian weasels were more abundant in 50 m areas, and Korean hares and Manchurian chipmunks were in 50-100 m areas. Habitat using pattern of mammal species may be affected by the road. Reasonable road construction and maintenance would be needed for protection and management of wildlife and their habitats.

1. This is a part of the second nation-side survey of natural environment by the Ministry of Environment of Korea in 1997 and the Amphibians and Reptiles were surveyed in the area of Daegu and Dalsung. 2. The survey area was divided into 6 parts and the survey was carried out by the visiting and inquiry method. 3. The Amphibians surveyed were calssified into 2 orders, 6 families and 9 species, and Reptiles were classified into 2 orders, 6 families and 14 species, respectively. 4. Among the 23 species, 16 species, were surveyed at all the 6 parts. And among the surveyed species, 10 were rare or endangered species. 5. The result showed that several species decreased because of the destroy of habitat by the deforestation, overcatching for the materials of Korean medicine, and especially the prey by introduced foreign species-Rana catesbiana. 6. Elaphe schrenckii distributed in some areas and Gekko japonicus, having been reported extinct after 1920, distributed in Mt. Pi-suhl, Chung-ryong, and Choi-jung.
