        In this study, new moment-resisting precast concrete beam-column joint is proposed for moderate seismic regions. It has the connection reinforcing bars, penetrated the joint and lap-spliced with the bottom bars of precast U-beam. An experimental study was carried out to investigate the joint behavior subjected to reverse cyclic loading and constant axial compressive load. Three precast beam-column interior were tested. The variables examined were the type of connection reinforcing bars and presence of transverse reinforcement in joint. Joint performance is evaluated on the basis of connection .strength, stiffness, energy dissipation, and drift capacity. Based on the test results, the precast connection is capable of matching or exceeding the performance of the monolithic connection and thereby provides the sufficient moment-resisting behavior to be applicable for moderate seismic regions.

      • 라미부딘 내성 만성 B형 간염 환자에서의 아데포비어의 치료 효과

        Backgrounds/Aims : Adefovir dipivoxil(ADV) has been shown to be effective against lamivudine resistant strain of hepatitis B virus. But continuation of lamivudine therapy or switching to Adefovir dipivoxil in patients with viral breakthrough after long term lamivudine therapy are controversial. To find efficacy of adefovir dipivoxil, we retrospectively assessed clinical course after lamivudine resistance in patients who changed adefovir dipivoxil and continued lamivudine therapy. Methods : 58 patients with lamivudine resistant HBV mutants after at least 6 months of lamivudine treatment were included in this study. 24 of the 58 patients were treated with ADV and rest of them were continued the lamivudine therapy after lamivudine resistance. The continuous lamivudine treatment group (n=34) was divided into two groups according to ALT count (ALT≧40, n=19 vs ALT<40, n=16) The clinical course and the biochemical and virological response of the switching adefovir group were compared with those of continuing lamivudine group. HBV genotypes and YMDD mutation site was anaylzed by TRUGENE HBV Genotyping. Results : At twelve months, the levels of median serum HBV DNA and ALT was decreased and albumin was improved significantly(P<0.01) in adefovir switching group compared with lamivudine sustained group, especially ALT was elevated more than 40. There is no significant differences between adefovir switching group and lamivudine sustained group (ALT<40, n=15). This study showed that adefovir dipivoxil reduces HBV replication and improves not only biochemical markers of disease activity, but also liver function. HBV genotypes of 58 patients were all C and rtM204I/V mutant was the most common. Conclusion : This study provides an evidence that adefovir dipivoxil can be effective in the treatment of lamivudine-resistant HBV mutants, especially ALT elevated.

        Discriminative detection of indoor volatile organic compounds using a sensor array based on pure and Fe-doped In<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> nanofibers

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Representative indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, xylene, toluene, formaldehyde, and ethanol need to be detected in a highly sensitive and discriminative manner because of their different impact on human health. In this study, pure and 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 at% Fe-doped In<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning and their gas sensing characteristics toward the aforementioned VOCs were investigated. The doping of In<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nanofiber sensor with 0.05 and 0.1 at% Fe shifted the temperature to show the maximum responses to benzene, xylene, and toluene, and reduced responses to ethanol and formaldehyde, thus demonstrating changed gas selectivity. The gas sensing characteristics of 0.5 at% Fe-doped In<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nanofiber sensor were substantially different from those of the other sensors. Significantly different gas sensing patterns of pure and Fe-doped In<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> sensors could be used to discriminate between the five different VOCs at 375 °C and to distinguish between the aromatic and non-aromatic gases at all sensing temperatures.         Effect of inorganic mesoporous carriers on 1-palmitoyl-2-linoleoyl-3-acetyl-<i>rac</i>-glycerol-loaded solid self-emulsifying drug delivery system: Physicochemical characterization and bioavailability in rats

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of inorganic mesoporous carriers on the physicochemical properties and oral bioavailability of 1-palmitoyl-2-linoleoyl-3-acetyl-<I>rac</I>-glycerol (PLAG)-loaded solid self-emulsifying drug delivery system (solid SEDDS). Numerous PLAG-loaded solid SEDDS formulations were prepared by spray drying technique with sodium laurylsulfate (SLS), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and inorganic mesoporous materials as a surfactant, antioxidant and solid carrier, respectively. The mesoporous materials, such as calcium silicate, silicon dioxide and magnesium aluminosilicate were used as the solid carriers. Their physicochemical properties, solubility, dissolution and pharmacokinetic studies in rats were performed compared with drug alone. Three solid SEDDSs composed of PLAG/BHA/SLS/mesopous carrier at the weight ratio of 1:0.0002:0.25:0.5 resulted in a small emulsion droplet and excellent drug loading efficiency. The solid SEDDS formulations prepared with calcium silicate and silicon dioxide showed a rough-surfaced irregular shape and rough-surfaced spheres, respectively. Magnesium aluminosilicate generated a sticky powder, due to its relatively low specific surface area, resulting in insufficient adsorption of PLAG. These solid SEDDSs improved the solubility, dissolution and oral bioavailability of PLAG. Ultimately, the solid SEDDS prepared with silicon dioxide resulted in the best drug loading efficiency, shape, solubility, dissolution and oral bioavailability due to its great specific surface area. Therefore, mesoporous carriers with different specific surface areas markedly influenced the physicochemical properties, solubility, dissolution and oral bioavailability of PLAG-loaded solid SEDDS.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The effect of mesoporous carriers on PLGA-loaded solid SEDDS were assessed. </LI> <LI> Numerous PLGA-loaded solid SNEDDS were prepared using spray drying technique. </LI> <LI> Calcium silicate, silicon dioxide and magnesium aluminosilicate were used as the mesoporous carriers. </LI> <LI> The solid SEDDS prepared with silicon dioxide gave most excellent loading efficiency and bioavailability. </LI> <LI> Mesoporous carriers markedly influenced the physicochemical properties and bioavailability of solid SEDDS. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Background: Gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) is an enzyme mainly produced from the cells of the hepatobiliary tract. And, It has been introduced as a biomarker for oxidative stress by smoking as well as alcohol consumption. This study was performed to evaluate the association between smoking and serum GGT concentration Methods: The effect of cigarette smoking on serum activities of the enzyme, GGT was investigated using the data of the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (5th KNHANES, 2010 to 2012); a cross-sectional survey in the general population of Korea. Results: We analyzed 11,670 subjects (age> 19 years) who had the data about smoking status and serum GGT levels. Subjects comprised 4,597 subjects who are cigarette smokers and 7,073 who do not smoke, which serves as control. The mean ± standard deviation (S.D) of serum GGT levels in cigarette smokers and non-smokers were 48.74± 69.35 U/L and 23.18± 24.03 U/L respectively, showing a significant increase in serum level of GGT (P<0.001) when compared with controls. GGT levels showed a significant positive correlation with amount of smoking (r=0.249, P<0.001). Cigarette smoking produced a significant increase in GGT activity irrespective of low to moderate alcohol consumption Conclusions: The levels of serum GGT was significantly associated with the status and amount of smoking. Smoking should be taken into account when assessing the significance of GGT activities.

      • Stress-induced expression of the sweetpotato gene <i>IbLEA14</i> in poplar confers enhanced tolerance to multiple abiotic stresses

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins are small, highly hydrophilic proteins that act as protectors of macromolecules and increase abiotic stress tolerance in plants. We previously reported that overexpressing sweetpotato <I>IbLEA14</I> under the control of the <I>CaMV 35S</I> promoter increased osmotic and salt stress tolerance in transgenic sweetpotato calli. In this study, we generated transgenic poplar plants (<I>Populus alba × P. glandulosa</I>) expressing <I>IbLEA14</I> under the control of the oxidative stress-inducible <I>SWPA2</I> promoter (referred to as SL plants). Among the 15 SL plants obtained, three lines (SL2, SL7, and SL12) were established based on <I>IbLEA14</I> transcript levels, tolerance to salt stress and Southern blot analysis. The SL plants exhibited less damage in response to methyl viologen-mediated oxidative stress than non-transgenic (NT) plants. SL plants also showed enhanced tolerance to drought, salt, and heat stress, which was associated with higher photosystem II efficiency and lower malondialdehyde levels compared with NT plants. Furthermore, SL plants had higher levels of monolignol biosynthesis-related gene transcripts under drought stress compared with NT plants. Finally, SL plants exhibited increased tolerance to heat stress, which is associated with the high thermostability of IbLEA14 protein. SL plants might be useful for reforestation on global marginal lands, including desertification and reclaimed areas.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> <I>IbLEA14</I> gene was transformed into poplar plants. </LI> <LI> Transgenic poplars exhibit increased tolerance to MV-mediated oxidative, drought, salt and heat stress. </LI> <LI> Overproduction of IbLEA14 affects lignification and thermostability of transgenic poplars. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • A WD40 Domain Cyclophilin Interacts with Histone H3 and Functions in Gene Repression and Organogenesis in Arabidopsis.

        <P>Chromatin-based silencing provides a crucial mechanism for the regulation of gene expression. We have identified a WD40 domain cyclophilin, CYCLOPHILIN71 (CYP71), which functions in gene repression and organogenesis in Arabidopsis thaliana. Disruption of CYP71 resulted in ectopic activation of homeotic genes that regulate meristem development. The cyp71 mutant plants displayed dramatic defects, including reduced apical meristem activity, delayed and abnormal lateral organ formation, and arrested root growth. CYP71 was associated with the chromatin of target gene loci and physically interacted with histone H3. The cyp71 mutant showed reduced methylation of H3K27 at target loci, consistent with the derepression of these genes in the mutant. As CYP71 has close homologs in eukaryotes ranging from fission yeast to human, we propose that it serves as a highly conserved histone remodeling factor involved in chromatin-based gene silencing in eukaryotic organisms.</P>

      • Involvement of heme oxygenase-1 induction in the cytoprotective and immunomodulatory activities of 6,4′-dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavanone in murine hippocampal and microglia cells

        <P>6,4'-Dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavanone (DMF), a biologically active compound, was isolated from the heartwood of Dalbergia odorifera T. Chen (Leguminosae). The present study proposed to examine the role of DMF as an anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory home oxygenase-1 (HO-1) inducer in mouse hippocampal HT22 cells and BV2 microglia cells. The effect of DMF on cell viability was determined by MIT assay and the effects of DMF on pro-inflammatory enzymes and cytokines were analyzed by western blot and ELISA. Parameters such as DMF induced HO-1 protein immunocontents, HO activity and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) activation were also measured. DMF increased cellular resistance to oxidative injury caused by glutamate-induced cytotoxicity in HT22 cells, via JUN N-terminal kinase (JNK) pathway dependent HO-1 expression. Furthermore, DMF suppressed the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced expression of pro-inflammatory enzymes and inflammatory mediators in BV2 microglia. DMF suppressed production of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE(2)), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (INF-alpha) and interleukin-1 beta(IL-1 beta), through extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway dependent HO-1 expression. This study indicates that DMF effectively modulates the regulation of anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory action, via up-regulation of HO-1 in HT22 cells and BV2 microglia. These results suggest that DMF possesses therapeutic potentials against neurodegenerative diseases that are induced by oxidative stress and neuroinflammation. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V.         Treatment of (dichloromethyl)benzenes with CO (1 atm) in the presence of catalytic amount of $Co_2(CO)_8,\;Fe(CO)_5$ and BTEAC under two phase systems with NaOH(_{aq}) and $PhCH_3$ containing small amount of alcohol for 20 hours at 80$^{\circ}$C gives phenylacetic acids in moderate yields.
