Egypt has been known as the light house of science and innovation not only in the Middle East but to the world across ages. Recently, there have been many ups and downs that positioned Egypt in a lower rank that it actually deserves according to its long history. This review entitles the current condition of science, technology and innovation in Egypt and the consequent setting up of best practices of science and technology parks (STPs) experiences. Egypt's science, technology and innovation (STI) system is highly centralized and dominated by the public sector, with R&D happening mostly in state-run universities and research centers supervised by the Ministry of Higher Education and Ministry of Scientific Research. R&D indicators state that Egypt ranking is 40th worldwide for the published articles (around 10,000 papers in 2011), while the numbers of issued patents (350 local and 50 international in 2011) is still far beyond expected. STPs in Egypt are addressed in this review by three examples; smart village in Cairo, Investment zone in Borg El-Arab City and Technology Valley in Ismailia. The three models are discussed in details and a suggested road map for developing more STPs is estimated.

Abdel-Ghany, Basma E.,Abdel-Hady, Bothaina M.,El-Kady, Abeer M.,Beheiry, Hanan H.,Guirguis, Osiris W. Techno-Press 2015 Advances in materials research Vol.4 No.4
Contamination by bacterial strands is a major problem after bone replacement surgeries, so there is a great need to develop low cost biocompatible antibacterial bioactive scaffolds to be used in bone tissue engineering. For this purpose, nano-zinc doped hydroxyapatite with different zinc-concentrations (5, 10 and 15 mol%) was successfully prepared by the wet chemical precipitation method. The prepared powders were used to form porous scaffolds containing biodegradable Ca-cross-linked alginate (5%) in order to enhance the properties of alginate scaffolds. The scaffolds were prepared using the freeze-gelation method. The prepared powders were tested by X-ray diffraction; transmission electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared analyses, while the prepared scaffolds were investigated by Fourier transform infrared analyses, thermogravimetric analyses and measurement of the antibacterial properties. Best results were obtained from scaffold containing 15% mol zinc-doped hydroxyapatite powders and 5% alginate concentration with ratio of 70:30.
Ac and Dc conductivities of polyaniline/poly vinyl formal blend films
Shaker Ebrahim,Abdel-Hady Kashyout,Moataz Soliman 한국물리학회 2009 Current Applied Physics Vol.9 No.3
The synthesis and characterization of polyaniline (PANI)/poly vinyl formal (PVF) blend films were carried out in this work. Polyaniline base was doped using dodecylbenzene sulfonic acid (DBSA). These blend films were characterized by UV–Visible, FTIR spectra and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate their optical, structural and morphological properties. It was found that the percolation threshold of these blends is 4.4 wt% of PANI. The dc and ac conductivities of these blend films have been measured at a temperature range from 300 to 100 K in the frequency range of 10 kHz to 1 MHz. The electrical conductivity of the blend films enhanced with the increase of polyaniline amount up to a value of 2.5 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 65 wt% of polyaniline. The dc conductivity of the PANI/PVF blend films follows the three-dimension variable range hopping. Temperature variation of frequency exponents in this blend suggests that ac conduction is attributed to be correlated barrier hopping. The effect of yield stress on the free convective heat transfer of dilute liquid suspensions of nanofluids flowing on a vertical plate saturated in porous medium under laminar conditions is investigated considering the nanofluid obeys the mathematical model of power-law. The model used for non-Newtonian nanofluid incorporates the effects of Brownian motion and thermophoresis. The governing boundary-layer equations are cast into dimensionless system which is solved numerically using a deferred correction technique and Newton iteration. This solution depends on yield stress parameter Ω, a power-law index n, Lewis number Le, a buoyancy-ratio number Nr, a Brownian motion number Nb, and a thermophoresis number Nt. Analyses of the results found that the reduced Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are decreasing functions of the higher yield stress parameter for each dimensionless numbers, n and Le, except the reduced Sherwood number is an increasing function of higher Nb for different values of yield stress parameter.

4-Arylazo-3-phenyl-5-aminopyrazoles (5a, b) and substituted hydroxythiazoles 8a, b were synthesized from the reaction of 4a, b with hydrazine hydrate and mercaptoacetic acid respectively. Compounds 5a, b and 8a, b were also obtained from coupling of 2a, b with 6 and 7, respectively. 4H-1, 4-Benzothiazine 11 was prepared from 1 and 10. The resaction of the diazonium salts 2a-c with diethyl 3-amino-2-cyanopenet-2-en-1, 5-dicarboxylate 12 was also reported.

Adriblastina, a cancerostatic anthracycline antibiotic, causes considerable oxidative damage to DNA molecules. The interaction of this compound with DNA was investigated using Osteryoung square wave stripping voltammetry (OSWSV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) at an in situ mercury film electrode. It was found that the equilibrium constant of the bonded oxidized form of the drug was 63 times bigger more important than that of the bonded reduced form. Copper forms 1 metal: 2 drug stoichiometry complex which is highly stable compared to ssDNA-drug interaction and consequently inhibited the drug biochemical damaging effects. Copper complex offered sub-nanogram determination of adriblastina in aqueous and urine media.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a major cause of cancer mortality worldwide. The outcome of HCC depends mainly on its early diagnosis. To date, the performance of traditional biomarkers is unsatisfactory. Talins were firstly identified as cytoplasmic protein partners of integrins but Talin-1 appears to play a crucial role in cancer formation and progression. Our study was conducted to assess the diagnostic value of serum Talin-1 (TLN1) compared to the most feasible traditional biomarker alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) for the diagnosis of HCC. Methods: TLN1 was detected using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in serum samples from 120 Egyptian subjects including 40 with HCC, 40 with liver cirrhosis (LC) and 40 healthy controls (HC). Results: ROC curve analysis was used to create a predictive model for TLN1 relative to AFP in HCC diagnosis. Serum levels of TLN1 in hepatocellular carcinoma patients were significantly higher compared to the other groups (p<0.0001). The diagnostic accuracy of TLN1 was higher than that of AFP regarding sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value in diagnosis of HCC. Conclusions: The present study showed for the first time that Talin-1 (TLN1) is a potential diagnostic marker for HCC, with a higher sensitivity and specificity compared to the traditional biomarker AFP.
Molluscicidal Activity and Clinico-pathological Effect of Agave lophantha
El-Sayed, M.M.,Abdel-Hadi, M.,El-Nahas, H.A. The Pharmaceutical Society of Korea 1991 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.14 No.1
Dry powder and different extracts of Agave lophantha were tested against Biomphalaria alexandrina. The results showed that the butanol extract has high molluscicidal activity. The activity of the dry powder has been found to be stable under the effect of some simulated field conditions. Also the toxicological effect of the plant on mice was tested through determination of certain parameters such as total protein, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase enzymes as well as histopathological study on liver and kidney.
