This study investigates the performance of the reinforced concrete frame with the steel plate slit damper. The test was carried out to investigate the structural behavior between the reinforced concrete bare frame and the reinforced concrete frame with the steel plate slit damper. The test results showed that the energy absorption capacity of the damped-frame was several times larger than that of the bare frame. For the damage by the input energy is concentrated on the steel plate slit damper, the ductilities of the former structure were increased and the damaged frame can be reused after exchange the steel plate slit damper.

The novel PWM(pulsewidth modulation) strategy of three-phase voltage source inverter in the overmodulation range is proposed. Generally, the space vector PWM strategy in the overmodulation range is widely utilized due to its simple and effective digital implementation and increased voltage transfer ratio. A unique algorithm manages the transition form the onset of overmodulation to six-step operation. This proposed technique maximizes the utilization of the dc-link voltage and maintain the voltage linearity between the reference and output voltages, and it decreases the necessary memory quantity for the look-up table of the angle.

Recently residential tall buildings have been prosperous in Korea with the type of multi-used building since late 1990s. Although 6 buildings ranked in world tallest building Top 200 have been built in Seoul, over 100-stories building isn't presented yet. The characteristics of Korean super-tall buildings are described; ① located in Seoul city, Kyung-gi do Sung-nam city, and Busan city ② the height between 100m and 200m ③ multi-used building. The purpose of this study is to find out the behavior of tall building in point of displacement contribution factor calculated by the principle of virtual work. Consequently present the most effective members for controling lateral drift control by analysis using computer programs on a real structural model.
Development and Selection of GM Cabbage Resistant to Diamondback Moth

Bt gene derived from the B. thuringiensis has been used for developing GM crops, and corn, cotton and soybean producing B. thuringiensis toxins have been on the market for last 17 years or so creating a huge GM seed industry. One of the notorious pests in brassica crops is diamondback moth (DBM). In order to protect the insect plague of crops from DBM, 4-5 billion dollars have been wasted annually for applying integrated measures in worldwide. Major prevention is use of pesticides that may build the contamination level of chemicals in the ground and this practice threats the environment and ecosystem. An alternative is to develop GM brassica crops and therefore we have developed GM cabbages resistant DBM using bt gene. Lots of T0 cabbages were tested for resistance and independent GM cabbages resistant to DBM were selected. Molecular analysis was conducted to find if GM cabbage holds one copy transgene and intergenic insertion. We found an independent GM cabbage and it contained a singly copy of the transgene without disturbing the insertion site. This one called C95 line with an status of event have been self-crossed for two generation (T2). Also we are working the development of GM cabbage with different vector that contains bar gene as a selection marker. So far 17 T0 cabbages have been obtained by bar selection.

The omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is known to induce apoptosis and cell cycle arrest via the induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in many types of cancers. However, the roles of DHA in drug-resistant cancer cells have not been elucidated. In this study, we investigated the effects of DHA in cisplatin-resistant gastric cancer SNU-601/cis2 cells. DHA was found to induce ROS-dependent apoptosis in these cells. The inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate receptor ($IP_3R$) blocker 2-aminoethyl diphenylboninate (2-APB) reduced DHA-induced ROS production, consequently reducing apoptosis. We also found that G-protein-coupled receptor 120 (GPR120), a receptor of long-chain fatty acids, is expressed in SNU-601/cis2 cells, and the knockdown of GPR120 using specific shRNAs alleviated DHA-mediated ROS production and apoptosis. GPR120 knockdown reduced the expression of ER stress response genes, similar to the case for the pre-treatment of the cells with N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), an ROS scavenger, or 2-APB. Indeed, the knockdown of C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP), a transcription factor that functions under ER stress conditions, markedly reduced DHA-mediated apoptosis, indicating that CHOP plays an essential role in the anti-cancer activity of DHA. These results suggest that GPR120 mediates DHA-induced apoptosis by regulating $IP_3R$, ROS, and ER stress levels in cisplatin-resistant cancer cells, and that GPR120 is an effective chemotherapeutic target for cisplatin resistance.

In this study, the cause of piping phenomenon is reviewed by model tests for extension embankment in permeability foundation due to limit flow velocity and limit hydraulic gradient to be calculated by laboratory testing, and is examined seepage behavior characteristics according to the piping phenomenon due to a case study happened in embankment field, and it is the purpose of suppling basic data to determine design criterion. Based on this experimental and analytical study, the following conclusions were induced. The result comparing the distribution tendency of seepage line by theoretical method and FEM for flood level, is examined that Mononobe's method show many differences due to permeability coefficient variety, and Casagrande's method shows the similar tendency with FEM result. In the result of examining the piping safety, because the safety factor is different due to calculated methods such as limit flow velocity, limit hydraulic gradient, and seepage pressure, the piping safety must estimate to consider a minimum safety factor of the calculated methods. In the case of extending by soil with a large permeability coefficient in a extension embankment, it shows that the safety factor for piping decreases. Therefore, the possibility of piping must be reviewed due to the distribution of seepage line and a safety factor for piping in the case of extending embankment.
Growth of Issatchenkia orientalis in Aerobic Batch and Fed-batch Cultures

The aerobic batch growth of Issatchenkia orientalis DY252 with glucose and fructose medium was investigated at 32$\^{C}$ and pH 5.0. Aerobic ethanol production was evident with yeast I, orientalis. A diauxic lag of about 1 h between growth on glucose and growth on ethanol during batch culture was observed. However, no diauxic growth occurred with fructose. As the incubation temperature was increased from 32 to 39$\^{C}$, viability at the end of each batch culture declined significantly, from 93 to 43%, Unlike the effect of temperature, viability was not greatly affected by incubation pH, and cell yield values in a range of 0.45-0.48 were obtained. In order to overcome overflow metabolism, a fedbatch culture under glucose limitation was carried out. Compared with aerobic batch culture, about 10% improvement in cell yield was achieved with a fed-batch culture in optimal conditions.
