Regulatory Role of Hypoxia Inducible Factor in the Biological Behavior of Nucleus Pulposus Cells

Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is implicated as a major cause of low back pain. The alternated phenotypes, reduced cell survival, decreased metabolic activity,loss of matrix production and dystrophic mineralization of nucleus pulposus (NP) cells may be key contributors to progressive IVD degeneration. IVD is the largest avascular structure in the body, characterized by low oxygen tension in vivo. Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) is a master transcription factor that is induced upon hypoxia and directs coordinated cellular responses to hypoxic environments. This review summarizes relevant studies concerning the involvement of HIF in the regulation of biological behaviors of NP cells. We describe current data on the expression of HIF in NP cells and further discuss the various roles that HIF plays in the regulation of the phenotype, survival, metabolism, matrix production and dystrophic mineralization of NP cells. Here, we conclude that HIF may be a promising target for the prevention and treatment of IVD degeneration.

Due to habitat fragmentation, the loss of species diversity has been extensively studied. On the contrary, the effects of habitat fragmentation on functional diversity is still poorly understood. In the Thousand Island Lake, we conducted studies of insect functional diversity on a set of 29 isolated islands. We used 10 functional diversity indices from three aspects (functional richness, functional evenness and functional divergence) to respectively describe functional diversity of insects on sample islands. We found the following results: (i) The functional indices selected could reflect the functional diversity of sample islands and it is further proved that in general, three components of functional diversity were independent of each other; (ii) Sample islands could be divided into two categories, island JSD and the remaining islands; (iii) Functional richness increased with island area and shape index, but had no significant correlation with isolation. Likewise, both functional evenness and functional divergence had no significant correlation with island attributes. The conclusion to emphasize from our research is that: (i) habitat fragmentation reduced the biological functional diversity to some extent, further demonstrating the importance of habitat continuity in biodiversity protection; and (ii) for functional diversity protection of insects in a fragmented landscape, an island which has high approximate shape index values of at least hundred hectare magnitude order has a critical promoting effect.
Risk Factors for Recurrent Colorectal Polyps

The recurrence of colorectal polyps is caused by various factors and leads to the carcinogenesis of colorectal cancer, which ranks third in incidence and fourth in mortality among cancers worldwide. The potential risk factors for colorectal polyp recurrence have been demonstrated in multiple trials. However, an article that pools and summarizes the various results is needed. This review enumerates and analyzes some risk factors in terms of patient characteristics, procedural operations, polyp characteristics, and dietary aspects to propose some effective prophylactic measures. This review aimed to provide a reference for clinical application and guide patients to prevent colorectal polyp recurrence in a more effective manner.
Interval grey number of energy consumption helps task offloading in the mobile environment

The mobile device has been widely used in many areas. Task offloading is always used to overcome the limitation of processing ability and energy-supply of the mobile devices in the mobile cloud environment. Most researches suppose we know the detail of task (number of instructions) of every sub-task. But most of time, to get the detail of a task is very difficult. This paper uses the grey number to express that uncertain information and propose method to evaluate the performance of offloading tasks. Simulations show that our method selects the solution with the lowest energy consumption.
Discrimination of neutrons and gamma-rays in plastic scintillator based on spiking cortical model

In this study, a spiking cortical model (SCM) based n-g discrimination method is proposed. The SCMbased algorithm is compared with three other methods, namely: (i) the pulse-coupled neural network (PCNN), (ii) the charge comparison, and (iii) the zero-crossing. The objective evaluation criteria used for the comparison are the FoM-value and the time consumption of discrimination. Experimental results demonstrated that our proposed method outperforms the other methods significantly with the highest FoM-value. Specifically, the proposed method exhibits a 34.81% improvement compared with the PCNN, a 50.29% improvement compared with the charge comparison, and a 110.02% improvement compared with the zero-crossing. Additionally, the proposed method features the second-fastest discrimination time, where it is 75.67% faster than the PCNN, 70.65% faster than the charge comparison and 38.4% slower than the zero-crossing. Our study also discusses the role and change pattern of each parameter of the SCM to guide the selection process. It concludes that the SCM's outstanding ability to recognize the dynamic information in the pulse signal, improved accuracy when compared to the PCNN, and better computational complexity enables the SCM to exhibit excellent n-g discrimination performance while consuming less time.
Compatibility of Neural Stem Cells with Functionalized Selfassembling Peptide Scaffold In vitro

In this study, we evaluated the behavior of neural stem cells (NSCs) using a new peptide hydrogel scaffold named IKVAVmx, which was made by mixing self-assembling peptide RADA16 and designer peptide RADA16-IKVAV solutions. NSCs derived from rat cerebral cortex were culture-expanded in neuorobasal medium and seeded on the RADA16 and IKVAVmx hydrogels. Cells could penetrate the hydrogels and form a 3D cellular network. Compared to pure RADA16 scaffold, we found that IKVAVmx scaffold significantly promoted cell proliferation and stimulated cell migration into the 3D scaffold. Moreover, Immunocytochemistry and Western blot analysis indicated that the differentiation ratio of neurons from NSCs in IKVAVmx scaffold was higher than that in pure RADA16 scaffold. These results suggested that this new hydrogel scaffold provided an ideal substrate for NSCs 3D culture and suggested its further application for neural tissue engineering.
