Objective: To investigate the expression pattern of transforming growth factor-β-inducible gene-h3 (βig-h3) within rheumatoid synovial tissue and the regulation of βig-h3 synthesis in fibroblast-like synoviocyte (FLS). Methods: Synovial tissues obtained from patients with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis were obtained during joint replacement surgery. βig-h3 expression was evaluated with immunohistochemical stain. FLS was isolated from synovial tissues and stimulated with cytokines including TGF-β, TNF-α, IL-1β, IFN-γ, IL-6, IL-4, and IL-10. βig-h3 synthesis was measured using semiquantitative RT-PCR, ELISA, immunofluorescence stain, and flow cytometry. Results: Expression of βig-h3 was diffuse and abundant in both lining and sublining layers of rheumatoid synovium, which was more prominent than those of osteoarthritis. Production of βig-h3 in FLS was regulated by TGF-β1 in a dose-dependent manner and was highest at 5 ng/mL of TGF-β1. TNF-α and IL-1β upregulated the production of βig-h3 from FLS synergistically with TGF-β1 but other cytokines such as IL-4, IL-6, IL-10 did not affect. βig-h3 synthesis was efficiently inhibited by dexamethasone at higher dose (100 nM) but not by cyclosporine-A. Conclusion: Production of βig-h3, which is highly upregulated in rheumatoid synovitis, is differentially regulated by inflammatory cytokines.
세라믹/고분자 1-3형 복합압전체 초음파 트랜스듀서를 사용한 근접거리변동 측정용 레벨Limit스위치에 관한 연구

In this study, an ultrasonic transducer is fabricated with 1-3 type composite resonators. Pulse-echo responses of an ultrasonic transducer are investigated in underwater dependent on the variable designated water-level. LED Output signals of a level limit with changing a water level are obtained by the 1-3 type self-made ceramics/polymer composite transducer and electric measuring unit. LED is turned on at above the up-limit level with increasing a water level, and LED is turned on at less level than the down-limit level with decreasing a water level. There was good agreement between the virtual water level and output LED signal by using the self-made water-detecting system.
글라스 아이오노머와 레진수복물 변연의 우식내성에 관한 비교실험연구

Standardized cavities were prepared on 60 permanent teeth which had been selected according to inherent fluoride ion content of enamel and several glass ionomers and composite resins were restored. After classification and deposition for 1, 2 and 3 weeks, artificial caries was made on these specimens and resulting histologic appearances and depths of the lesions were observed by a polarizing microscope. Then caries resistant effects of each materials were compared and analyzed. In groups of Ketac-Fil and Fuji Ⅱ, the depth of lesion was increased markedly as the distance had been far away from the margin of restoration materials, wherease in the control group(Silux Plus), lesion depth was deeper than the experimental group and uniform depth of lesion was made despite of the distance from the margin. Fluoride ion content released in solution was higher in Ketac-Fil, Fuji Ⅱ, Silux Plus by descending order and statistically significant difference between groups could be found.

In brain tissue, astrocytes play defensive roles in central nervous system integrity by mediating immune responses against pathological conditions. Type I phosphatidylinositol 4-phosphate 5-kinase ${\alpha}$ ($PIP5K{\alpha}$) that is responsible for production of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate ($PI[4,5]P_2$) regulates many important cell functions at the cell surface. Here, we have examined whether $PIP5K{\alpha}$ is associated with astrocyte inflammatory responses. Gangliosides are releasable from damaged cell membranes of neurons and capable of inducing inflammatory responses. We found that treatment of primary cultured astrocytes with gangliosides significantly enhanced $PIP5K{\alpha}$ mRNA and protein expression levels. $PI(4,5)P_2$ imaging using a fluorescent tubby (R332H) expression as a $PI(4,5)P_2$-specific probe showed that ganglioside treatment increased $PI(4,5)P_2$ level. Interestingly, microRNA-based $PIP5K{\alpha}$ knockdown strongly reduced ganglioside-induced transcription of proinflammatory cytokines IL-$1{\beta}$ and $TNF{\alpha}$. $PIP5K{\alpha}$ knockdown also suppressed ganglioside-induced phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of NF-${\kappa}B$ and the degradation of $l{\kappa}B-{\alpha}$, indicating that $PIP5K{\alpha}$ knockdown interfered with the ganglioside-activated NF-${\kappa}B$ signaling. Together, these results suggest that $PIP5K{\alpha}$ is a novel inflammatory mediator that undergoes upregulation and contributes to immune responses by facilitating NF-${\kappa}B$ activation in ganglioside-stimulated astrocytes.
간경변증 환자에서 도플러 초음파를 이용한 신저항 계수(RI)의 임상적 의의

Cirrhotic patients may exhibit circulatory derangement and renal dysfunction during the clinical course. Renal dysfunction on cirrhosis can occur without specific causative factors. This functional renal failure in cirrhosis is considered as a consequence of renal vasoconstriction. These alteratons of renal hemodynamics are already present in the early phase of the disease, even in the condition that the conventional kidney function tests are normal. A new method for noninvasive evaluation of arterial tone is duplex Doppler sonography. Among the various sonographic indices proposed, the renal resistive index(RI) is the most widely used for the estimation of intrarenal arteriolar vascular resistence. This study was performed to evaluate the role of Doppler sonography in early detection of renal dysfunction and to assess the clinical significance of RI. In 25 cirrhotic patients without overt kidney failure and ten control subjects, the RI of the acurate artery in both kidneys was measured by Doppler sonography. The mean RI of cirrhotic group was significangly higher than that of control subjects(0,68±0.08 vs -0.62 ±0.05,p<0). Accordiing to Child class, the RI showed increasing tendency from A to C, through witout statistical significance. In this study, the RI was significantly inversely correlated with 24hr urinary sodium amount(r=-0.39, p<0,05)and correlated with serum creatinine(r=6.60,p<0.01). This study indicates that the measurement of RI is a sensitive method to assess intarenal hemodynamics and to detect early changes of the renal dysfunction in cirrhotic patients.

Castleman' s disease is a rare, reactive lymphoid proliferation of unknown cause and pathogenesis. Depending on histololgic findings, it has been divided into two distinct histologic subtypes that include hyaline-vascular type(90%) and plasmacell type(10%). This disease occurs most commonly in mediastinal lymph nodes and cervical lymph nodes, inguinal lymph nodes respectively. But occurs rarely in retroperitoneum. We report a case of hyaline-vascular type asymptomatic Castleman' s disease of the retroperitoneum in a 47-year-old man.
