Study on the Focusing Position Effects in a Diode End-pumped Nd:YAG Laser

A multi-kHz high-repetition-rate laser-diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser was developed, and its lasing properties were demonstrated for laser optimization. The dependence of the output power on the pump beam’s focusing position in the Nd:YAG crystal was determined. The optimum focusing position of the pump beam for efficient extraction of the diode’s pump energy was confirmed to be 1 mm inside the laser crystal from the surface of the Nd:YAG. This focusing position is independent of the length of the laser crystal. The beam quality factor, M2, was decreased from values of 2.8 ∽ 2.9 to less than 1.3 in both the CW and the pulsed modes by insertion of a 500 ∽ 600 µm aperture inside the laser cavity. In second harmonic generation (SHG), we found that the output power and the pulse width were very sensitive to the LBO operating temperature. We confirmed that controlling the LBO crystal’s temperature was very important for efficient and stable operation of the 532 nm laser.
Bacillus subtilis 균주의 기능성 분석 및 이를 활용한 고추 흰가루병 방제

The multi-function of 18 Bacillus subtilis isolates collected from agricultural extension centers of local government and National Academy of Agricultural Science was investigated by measuring their antifungal activities against five plant pathogens, such as Rhizoctonia solani, Colletotrichum acutatum, Fusarium oxysporum, Magnaporthe oryzae and Phytophthora capsici, phosphorus solubilization ability, production of indole acetic acid (IAA) and siderophore, and nitrogen fixation. The B. subtilis isolates showed antifungal activity against several plant pathogens and nitrogen fixation activity, and produced siderophore and IAA. They could control pepper powdery mildew (Leveillula taurica), but there was no difference in control efficacy among the B. subtilis isolates. In fields, the control efficacy of B. subtilis R2-1 (108 cells/ml) was compared with two microbial fungicides, Q-pect and Topsid. In 2009, the control efficacy of B. subtilis R2-1 (37.7%) was lower than that of Topsid (47.6%), but higher than that of Q-pect (25.7%). In 2010, the control efficacy of B. subtilis R2-1 (83.3%) was higher than that of Topsid (67.9%). In order to elucidate mode of action of B. subtilis R2-1 for controlling pepper powdery mildew, spore germination rates of pepper powdery mildew pathogen collected on treated leaves was investigated when suspensions of B. subtilis R2-1 and two microbial fungicides (Q-pect and Topsid) were foliar-sprayed. They highly suppressed spore germination of the pathogen with inhibition values of 84.2% for B. subtilis R2-1, 97.9% for Q-pect and 94.7% for Topsid. Further study on the mass-culturing method and formulation is needed for development of a microbial fungicide. 0
Saliency Score-Based Visualization for Data Quality Evaluation

Data analysts explore collections of data to search for valuable information using various techniques and tricks. Garbage in, garbage out is a well-recognized idiom that emphasizes the importance of the quality of data in data analysis. It is therefore crucial to validate the data quality in the early stage of data analysis, and an effective method of evaluating the quality of data is hence required. In this paper, a method to visually characterize the quality of data using the notion of a saliency score is introduced. The saliency score is a measure comprising five indexes that captures certain aspects of data quality. Some experiment results are presented to show the applicability of proposed method.
『母を恋うる記』-타나토스(Thanatos)와 에로스(Eros)의 대립양상-

エロス(Eros)とタナトス(Thanatos)に関する本格的な論議は、ジークムント⋅フロイト(Sigmund Freud)と共に始まったと思われる。『母を恋うる記』は夢という二つの本能がすれ違う状態で始まり、二つの空間で設定される。タナトス的様相を表すものとして、「暗黒の世界」、「沼」、「カサカサしている蓮」、「老いて醜いおばさん」などが挙げられ、エロス的様相を表すものとして、「月」、「海」、「三味線の音」、「狐」、「若くて美しい母」などが挙げられる。「沼」は地でもなく、水でもなく、また、川でも海でもない、中間形態の空間である。それは、清く透明でないものであり、固くて固着化した性質を持っていない、流動体の状態を意味する。それとは違い、「海」は地上と天上、誕生と消滅、明るさと暗さなどの象徴的意味を持っている。「沼」が悲しみの情緒ならば、「海」はその悲しみを積極的に受容し、拡大することにより、悲しみを絶望ではなく、復活の空間として昇華させる役割をする空間と見られる。『母を恋うる記』に登場する二人の女人の中で、エロスを代表する人物として「若くて美しい母」、タナトスを代表する人物として「老いて醜いおばさん」が挙げられる。エロスとタナトスの存在が一つであるように、作品の中の二人の女人の存在は、結局同一人物であり、否定したい母と、永遠に保ちたい母の姿を表現したものとされる。生と死、美しいものと醜いもの、希望と絶望などの二項対立構成は、結局、エロスとタナトスの内的分裂における対極構造なのだ。
