Understanding Taiwanese Women's Decisional Experiences Regarding Prenatal Screening Procedures And Diagnostics: A Phenomenological Study

        Mei-Man Chen,Bi-Hua Cheng 한국간호과학회 2020 Asian Nursing Research Vol.14 No.4

Purpose: This study sought to understand Taiwanese women’s decisional experiences regarding prenatalscreening procedures and diagnostics. Methods: A hermeneutic phenomenological design guided semistructured interviews with 33 womenwho were 36 weeks pregnant. Data were collected between February and October 2016. Verbatimtranscripts were analyzed following hermeneutic circle to cocreate an understanding of Taiwanesewomen’s decision-making in prenatal screening and diagnostics. Results: Women’s existential experiences were derived from their decision-making process on prenatalscreening procedures and diagnostics for chromosomal aneuploidy. These decisional experiences werecaptured by four theme clusters and eight themes, which were inductively derived from 16 meaningunits: (1) accessing health information; (2) considering what was best for my baby; (3) consideringfamily finance; and (4) feeling anxiety posttest. Conclusion: Participants made informed choices on several prenatal screening procedures, ostensibly, based on their personal values and considerations. During the decision-making process, often-citedbenefits of genetic screenings were emphasized, but test limitations were often unheeded. A fundamentalneed for supportive information in decision making was further identified with recommendedstrategies. Hence, a revision of traditional genetic counseling approaches is recommended. As genomicstechnologies are increasingly available during antenatal services, women should be sufficiently educatedabout them to support decision making.

Associations of HSP90AA2 gene polymorphisms with disease susceptibility, glucocorticoids efficacy and health-related quality of life in Chinese systemic lupus erythematosus patients

        Man Zhang,Su‑Su Li,Qiao‑Mei Xie,Jian‑Hua Xu,Xiu‑Xiu Sun,Fa‑Ming Pan,Sheng‑Qian Xu,Sheng‑Xiu Liu,Jin‑Hui Tao,Shuang Liu,Jing Cai,Pei‑Ling Chen,Long Qian,Chun‑Huai Wang,Chun‑Mei Liang,Hai‑Liang Huang,Ha 한국유전학회 2018 Genes & Genomics Vol.40 No.10

Although the current glucocorticoids (GCs) treatment for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is effective to a certain extent, the difference in therapeutic effect between patients is still a widespread problem. Some patients can have repeated attacks that greatly diminish their quality of life. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between HSP90AA2 polymorphisms and disease susceptibility, GCs efficacy and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in Chinese SLE patients. A case–control study was performed in 470 SLE patients and 470 normal controls. Then, 444 patients in the case group were followed up for 12 weeks to observe efficacy of GCs and improvement of HRQoL. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of HSP90AA2 were selected for genotyping: rs1826330 and rs6484340. HRQoL was assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire. The minor T allele of rs1826330 and the TT haplotype formed by rs1826330 and rs6484340 showed associations with decreased SLE risk (T allele: PBH = 0.022; TT haplotype: PBH = 0.033). A significant association between rs6484340 and improvement of HRQoL was revealed in the follow-up study. Five subscales of SF-36 were appeared to be influenced by rs6484340: total score of SF-36 (additive model: PBH = 0.026), physical function (additive model: PBH = 0.026), rolephysical (recessive model: PBH = 0.041), mental health (dominant model: PBH = 0.047), and physical component summary (additive model: PBH = 0.026). No statistical significance was found between HSP90AA2 gene polymorphisms and GCs efficacy. These results revealed a genetic association between HSP90AA2 and SLE. Remarkably, HSP90AA2 has an impact on the improvement of HRQoL in Chinese population with SLE.

      • A Correlation Research of Moral behavior in Physical Education Learning Process of College Students in Shanghai

( Si Man Lei ),( Yan Xiu Cai ),( Mei Jun Teng ),( Chen Song Wang ) 한국체육학회 2015 국제스포츠과학 학술대회 Vol.2015 No.1

Purpose: The study was to explore the relationship between physical education, moral education and moral behaviors, and the difference of moral behaviors among college students in Shanghai. Method: The targeted voluntary participants were 399 college students in Shanghai. Data were collected through administering self-report scale of Moral behavior in Physical Education was used, which with Cronbach`s alpha is .983. It is designed to investigate the relationship between individual`s demographic background (age, gender, grade, self-perceived academic performance, socioeconomic status and self-esteem), participating sports types, and the seven moral behaviors (self-directed learning, motivation of sport participation, individual goal orientation, responsibility, respect, leadership and caring). For group differences, correlation study and regression investigation were interpreted through data analysis in SPSS 20.0. Result: 1) It can be found having no time is the main reason for not participating in extracurricular physical activities. 2) The moral education, physical and mental health, compliance and equality, integrity and diligence and self-improvement and cooperation were correlated significantly. 3) There was gender difference on active participation. 4) Physical and mental health, active participation, self-orientation, leadership were positively correlated with the overall moral behavior scale. Conclusion: College students who participate more in exercise have better performance on moral behavior. Therefore college students should do more exercises. Considering that integrity and diligence, self-improvement and cooperation, and offering help that sport club participants scored higher than non-participants, we should encourage college students to participant in more sport clubs. Changing traditional teaching model, searching for new methods in improving moral education and further promoting the integration of physical and moral education is needed. A relevant curriculum could be established in future teaching program.

Structure-based design, structure–activity relationship analysis, and antitumor activity of diaryl ether derivatives

        Shao-Mei Yang,Fu-Nan Li,Zhi-Ning Huang,Zhong-Shi Zhou,Jin Hou,Man-Yi Zheng,Li-Juan Wang,Yu Jiang,Xin-Yi Zhou,Qiu-Yue Chen,Shan-Hua Li 대한약학회 2015 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.38 No.10

To identify novel therapeutic agents to treatcancer, we synthesized a series of diaryl ether derivatives. Structure–activity relationship studies revealed that thepresence of a chlorine or hydroxyl at the para-position onthe phenyl ring (5h or 5k) significantly enhanced antitumoractivity. Compound 5h had stronger growth inhibitory activityin HepG2, A549, and HT-29 cells than compound 5k,with IC50 values of 2.57, 5.48, and 30.04 lM, respectively. Compound 5h also inhibited the growth of other cells lines, including Hep3B, PLC/PRF5, SMMC-7721, HeLa, andA375, with IC50 values of 2.76, 4.26, 29.66, 18.86, and10.21 lM, respectively. The antitumor activity of compound5h was confirmed by a colony forming assay. Further, our results indicated that the antitumor activity ofcompound 5h may be mediated by enhancing expression ofp21 and cl-caspase3, and leading to apoptosis of cancercells.

      • Decreased Expression of FADS1 Predicts a Poor Prognosis in Patients with Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

        Du, Yong,Yan, Shu-Mei,Gu, Wan-Yi,He, Fan,Huang, Li-Yun,Li, Mei,Yuan, Yan,Chen, Ren-Hui,Zhong, Qian,Li, Man-Zhi,Li, Yong,Zeng, Mu-Sheng Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.12

FADS1 (fatty acid desaturase 1) plays a crucial role in fatty acid metabolism, and it was recently reported to be involved in tumorigenesis. However, the role of FADS1 expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) remains unknown. In the current study, we investigated the expression and clinical pathologic and prognostic significance of FADS1 in ESCC. Immunohistochemical analyses revealed that 58.2% (146/251) of the ESCC tissues had low levels of FADS1 expression, whereas 41.8% (105/251) exhibited high levels of FADS1 expression. In positive cases, FADS1 expression was detected in the cytoplasm of cells. Correlation analyses demonstrated that FADS1 expression was significantly correlated with tumor location (p=0.025) but not with age, gender, histological grade, tumor status, nodal status or TNM staging. Furthermore, patients with tumors expressing high levels of FADS1had a longer disease-free survival time (p<0.001) and overall survival time (p <0.001). Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that, along with nodal status, FADS1 expression was an independent and significant predictive factor (p<0.001). In conclusion, our study suggested that FADS1 might be a valuable biomarker and potential therapeutic target for ESCC.

Preclinical Study of Novel Curcumin Analogue SSC-5 Using Orthotopic Tumor Xenograft Model for Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma

        Lai Nar Tung,Senchuan Song,Kin Tak Chan,Mei Yuk Choi,Ho Yu Lam,Chung Man Chan,Zhiyong Chen,Hector K. Wang,Hoi Ting Leung,Simon Law,Yanmin Huang,Huacan Song,Nikki P. Lee 대한암학회 2018 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.50 No.4

Purpose Tumor xenograft model is an indispensable animal cancer model. In esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) research, orthotopic tumor xenograft model establishes tumor xenograft in the animal esophagus, which allows the study of tumorigenesis in its native microenvironment. Materials and Methods In this study, we described two simple and reproducible methods to develop tumor xenograft at the cervical or the abdominal esophagus in nude mice by direct injection of ESCC cells in the esophageal wall. Results In comparing these two methods, the cervical one presented with more clinically relevant features, i.e., esophageal stricture, body weight loss and poor survival. In addition, the derived tumor xenografts accompanied a rapid growth rate and a high tendency to invade into the surrounding structures. This model was subsequently used to study the anti-tumor effect of curcumin, which is known for its potential therapeutic effects in various diseases including cancers, and its analogue SSC-5. SSC-5 was selected among the eight newly synthesized curcumin analogues based on its superior anti-tumor effect demonstrated in an MTT cell proliferation assay and its effects on apoptosis induction and cell cycle arrest in cultured ESCC cells. Treatment of orthotopic tumor-bearing mice with SSC-5 resulted in an inhibition in tumor growth and invasion. Conclusion Taken together, we have established a clinically relevant orthotopic tumor xenograft model that can serve as a preclinical tool for screening new anti-tumor compounds, e.g., SSC-5, in ESCC.
