The acquisition of an 18F-FDG PET-CT scan in patients with suspected paraneoplastic cerebellar syndrome can be helpful in determining the origin of a neoplasm because of its high sensitivity and also helps guide the neurological development course depending on the degree of incorporation of 18F-FDG to the cerebellar parenchyma when compared with the rest of the brain.

Study Design: Retrospective comparative clinical study. Purpose: This study aimed to assess paraspinal muscle atrophy in patients who underwent minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MI-TLIF) and unilateral pedicle screw fixation using a novel contralateral intact muscle-controlled model. Overview of Literature: The increased incidence of paravertebral lumbar muscle injuries after open techniques has raised the importance of implementing minimally invasive spine surgical techniques using tubular retractors and minimally invasive screw placement. The functional cross-sectional area (FCSA) represents the lean muscle mass; furthermore, FCSA is a useful marker of the contractile ability of a muscle following a spine surgery. However, the benefits of unilateral fixation and MI-TLIF on paraspinal muscles have not been defined. Methods: We performed a retrospective imagenological review on eleven patients who underwent unilateral MI-TLIF and unilateral transpedicular screw lumbar placement. FCSAs of the multifidus and erector spinae were measured 1 year after surgery at adjacent levels and were compared to the contralateral intact muscles. Measurement differences between the surgical and nonsurgical sites were compared. The interobserver reliability was calculated using an intraclass correlation coefficient. Results: The mean FCSA at the surgical site was 20.97±5.07 cm2 at the superior level and 8.89±2.87 cm2 at the inferior level. The mean FCSA at the contralateral nonsurgical site was 20.15±5.95 cm2 at the superior level and 9.20±2.66 cm2 at the inferior level was. The superior and inferior FCSA measurements showed no significant difference between the surgical and nonsurgical sites (p =0.5, p =0.922, respectively). Conclusions: Using a mini-open tubular approach through the sulcus between the longissimus and iliocostalis, MI-TLIF and unilateral pedicle screw instrumentation produced minimal paraspinal muscle damage at the superior and inferior adjacent levels.

Expression of recombinant proteins in Escherichia coli often leads to formation of inclusion bodies (IB). If a recombinant protein contains one or more disulfide bonds, protein refolding and thiol oxidation reactions are required to recover its biological activity. Previous studies have demonstrated that molecular chaperones and foldases assist with the in vitro protein refolding. However, their use has been limited by the stoichiometric amount required for the refolding reaction. In search of alternatives to facilitate the use of these folding biocatalysts in this study, DsbA, DsbC,and the apical domain of GroEL (AD) were fused to the carbohydrate-binding module CBDCex of Cellulomonas fimi. The recombinant proteins were purified and immobilized in cellulose and used to assist the oxidative refolding of denatured and reduced lysozyme. The assisted refolding yields obtained with immobilized folding biocatalysts were at least twice of those obtained in the spontaneous refolding, suggesting that the AD, DsbA, and DsbC immobilized in cellulose might be useful for the oxidative refolding of recombinant proteins that are expressed as inclusion bodies. In addition, the spontaneous or assisted refolding kinetics data fitted well (r2 > 0.9) to a previously reported lysozyme refolding model. The estimated refolding (kN)and aggregation (kA) constants were consistent with the hypothesis that foldases assisted the oxidative refolding of lysozyme by decreasing protein aggregation rather than increasing the refolding rate.

Muscovite mica is a widely accepted substrate for scanning probe microscopy (SPM) investigations. However, mica has intrinsic properties that alter samples and obstruct their analysis due to free charges build-up, ionic exchange and water adsorption taking place at the surface. In addition to interfacial phenomena, there is a growing interest in electrostatic charges on insulators as they are crucial in diverse applications. Despite the high demand for studies of this nature, experimental set-ups capable of resolving charge build-up at the micro-scale are still scarce and technically limited. Here, we report the imaging of surface charge dissipation on freshly cleaved mica by Kelvin-probe Force Microscopy (KPFM). A local electrostatic charge micro-domain was generated by friction between an atomic force microscope (AFM) tip and mica, and its decay was tracked by twodimensional mapping using KPFM. We found time-dependent charge dissipation, which is attributed to the adsorption of water molecules on mica surface.

Stroke is a major health problem worldwide. Its pharmacological management includes thrombolytic therapyfor the acute phase and antiplatelet drugs for stroke recovery and prevention. Statins can help in the acute phase and in pre-venting stroke in secondary prevention patients. Policosanol is a cholesterol-lowering drug with concomitant antiplatelet ef-fects, with protective effects in stroke models. This observational study investigated the effects of policosanol (20 mg/day)with antiplatelets and vitamins. After hospital discharge, patients were followed up every 3 (first year) and 6 (thereafter)months. Neurological improvement was assessed with the modified Canadian Neurological Scale. Adverse events wererecorded. Fifty patients were included; all completed the study. Neurological score improved throughout the study. No pa-tient died, and most [40 (80.0%)] did not experience new vascular events; only one (2.0%) suffered a new stroke, and two(4.0%) suffered more than one transient ischemic attack. The time to the first recurrent event was 46.2 months. Policosanolpersistently lowered serum total cholesterol, with such reduction correlating with the neurological improvement (R.chemic stroke treated with aspirin and vitamins showed good results on neurological outcomes and recurrent events. Thisstudy, however, has limitations, since it was open and uncontrolled, and patients also consumed aspirin and vitamins. Newrandomized, controlled studies are needed to assess the usefulness of policosanol in stroke management.

CDK16 (also known as PCTAIRE1 or PCTK1) is an atypical member of the cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) family that forms an active complex with cyclin Y (CCNY). Although both proteins have been recently implicated in cancer pathogenesis, it is still unclear how the CDK16/CCNY complex exerts its biological activity. To understand the CDK16/ CCNY network, we used complementary proteomic approaches to identify potential substrates of this complex. We identified several candidates implicating the CDK16/CCNY complex in cytoskeletal dynamics, and we focused on the microtubule-associated protein regulator of cytokinesis (PRC1), an essential protein for cell division that organizes antiparallel microtubules and whose deregulation may drive genomic instability in cancer. Using analog-sensitive (AS) CDK16 generated by CRISPR-Cas9 mutagenesis in 293T cells, we found that specific inhibition of CDK16 induces PRC1 dephosphorylation at Thr481 and delocalization to the nucleus during interphase. The observation that CDK16 inhibition and PRC1 downregulation exhibit epistatic effects on cell viability confirms that these proteins can act through a single pathway. In conclusion, we identified PRC1 as the first substrate of the CDK16/CCNY complex and demonstrated that the proliferative function of CDK16 is mediated by PRC1 phosphorylation. As CDK16 is emerging as a critical node in cancer, our study reveals novel potential therapeutic targets.

The effect of duckweed (DW) supplementation was evaluated on dry matter intake (DMI), presence and duration of estrus, percentage of ewes repeating estrus and pregnancy rate, as well as the concentration of progesterone ($P_4$) in multiparous crossbred ewes from Pelibuey, Dorper, and Katahdin breeds, fed with Taiwan grass hay (TWH). Eighteen ewes with $39.7{\pm}4kg$ mean body weight, kept in individual pens, were randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: $T_1$: TWH, $T_2$: TWH plus 200 g DW, $T_3$: TWH plus 300 g DW. The ewes were synchronized with 40 mg fluorogestone acetate (FGA) and 400 UI equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG). Data were analyzed as a completely randomized design using the GLM procedure. DW supplementation had no effect on dry matter intake (p>0.05); however, a slight decrease of TWH intake was observed as DW supplementation increased. No differences (p>0.05) were found in the beginning of estrus, percentage of ewes presenting it, its duration, or pregnancy rate. There were no differences (p>0.05) on $P_4$ concentration among treatments, or $treatment{\times}period$ interaction (p>0.05). However the period was significant (p<0.01), since the $P_4$ levels increased as time increased after the removal of the FGA device and eCG application.

We study a bivariate response regression model with arbitrary marginal distributions and joint distributions using Frank and Clayton's families of copulas. The proposed model is used for fitting dependent bivariate data with explanatory variables using the log-odd log-logistic Weibull distribution. We consider likelihood inferential procedures based on constrained parameters. For different parameter settings and sample sizes, various simulation studies are performed and compared to the performance of the bivariate odd-log-logistic-Weibull regression model. Sensitivity analysis methods (such as local and total influence) are investigated under three perturbation schemes. The methodology is illustrated in a study to assess changes on schoolchildren's oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in a follow-up exam after three years and to evaluate the impact of caries incidence on the OHRQoL of adolescents.
