Background/Aims: Colonic ischemia is recognized as the most common vascular disorder of the intestines in the elderly. The severity of the disease may vary considerably with the prevalent benign transient forms, being amenable to conservative treatments and the severe gangrenous forms, requiring surgery. Correct diagnosis is usually made after the ischemic episode is over and colonic ischemia is frequently misdiagnosed. The aim of this study is to identify the clinical patterns and prognostic factors of ischemic colitis. Methods: We found 60 patients with nonoccusive ischemia of the large intestine, We analyzed age, sex, symptoms, signs, associated disease, location, endoscopy, hematologic, histologic, radiologic finding and treatment, retrospectively. Results: The mean age was 60.2±6.3 years. The most common symtoms were abdominal pain or bloody diarrhea. The most common sign was diffuse abdominal tenderness. The most common hematologic findings were anemia and leukocytosis. Associated medical illnesses wer diabetes, rhematoid arthritis and cerebrovascular accident, et al. Both computed tomography (CT) and endoscopy were useful diagnostic tools. The most common involved site was sigmoid colon. 46 patients were treated conservatively and 14 patients were managed surgically. Conclusions: Male gender, those with rebound tenderness, severe anemia, right or total colon involvement as well as rheumatoid arthritis had a poor prognosis. Both CT and endoscopy were useful in predicting prognosis.
Design of a Pot-Shaped Monopole Antenna with Dual Band Notched Characteristics for UWB Application
Kwang Yun Mok,Young Chul Rhee,Joong Han Yoon 한국전자파학회JEES 2017 Journal of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science Vol.17 No.1
A compact planar microstrip-fed ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with a dual band-notched for UWB application is presented and analyzed. By inserting a U-shaped slot and inverted U-shaped slot into the pot-shaped radiator, two notched bands are achieved. By optimizing the width and length of the U-shaped slots and inverted U-shaped slot, a desired bandwidth of voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) less than 2.0 can be achieved, ranging from UWB bands with notched dual bands. The proposed antenna is fabricated on an inexpensive FR-4 substrate with overall dimensions of 28.0 mm × 39.5 mm. The measured results confirm that the proposed antenna covers from 1.775 to over 13.075 GHz with two rejection bands of around 3.325–3.925 GHz and 5.3125–6.025 GHz. In addition, the proposed antenna showed good radiation characteristics and gains in the UWB bands.

This paper proposes a dual band VCO with a standard 0.35l m CMOS process to generate 1.07 and 2.07 GHz. The proposedVCO architecture with 50% duty cycle circuit and a half adder (HA) is able to produce a frequency two times higher than that of theconventional VCOs. The measurement results demonstrate that the gain of VCO and power dissipation are 561 MHz/V and 14.6mW, respectively. The phase noises of the dual band VCO are measured to be)102.55 and)95.88 dBc/Hz at 2 MHz oset from 1.07and 2.07 GHz, respectively..

Background: We evaluated the long-term effects of domiciliary noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation (NIPPV) usedto treat patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: Databases were searched to identify randomized controlled trials of COPD with NIPPV for longer than 1 year. Mortality rates were the primary outcome in this meta-analysis. The eight trials included in this study comprised datafrom 913 patients. Results: The mortality rates for the NIPPV and control groups were 29% (118/414) and 36% (151/419), suggesting astatistically significant difference (risk ratio [RR], 0.79; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.65–0.95). Mortality rates werereduced with NIPPV in four trials that included stable COPD patients. There was no difference in admission, acuteexacerbation and quality of life between the NIPPV and control groups. There was no significant difference in withdrawalrates between the two groups (RR, 0.99; 95% CI, 0.72–1.36; p=0.94). Conclusion: Maintaining long-term nocturnal NIPPV for more than 1 year, especially in patients with stable COPD,decreased the mortality rate, without increasing the withdrawal rate compared with long-term oxygen treatment.
Extracts of Polygonum multiflorum Inhibit RANKL-mediated Osteoclast Differentiation
Kwang-Jin Kim,Yongjin Lee,Kyung-Yun Kang,Yun-Ho Hwang,Sung-Tae Yee,Sang-Jip Nam,Young-Jin Son 대한약학회 2018 약학회지 Vol.62 No.2
Osteoporosis is a disease caused by decreased bone density. The number of patients with osteoporosis is increasing, and the cost of medical treatment is rising because of the increase in fracture patients. Treatment of osteoporosis is important to prevention of bone loss. One treatment for osteoporosis is inhibition of osteoclast formation. Osteoclasts, which are multinucleated cells that absorb bone, are greatly increased and over-activated in bone disorders, including oste-oporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. In this study, we investigated whether extracts of P. multiflorum (PME) influence RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation. The PME significantly inhibited RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation by inhibiting transcriptional and translational expression of NFATc1, an essential element of RANKL-mediated osteoclast for-mation. Furthermore, it inhibited the mRNA expression of TRAP, DC-STAMP, and cathepsin K, which are all related to osteoclast differentiation and function. Thus, our results suggest that PME has the potential for use as a functional food and therapeutic substance for the treatment of osteoporosis.
Effects of Replacing Pork with Tuna Levels on the Quality Characteristics of Frankfurters
Kwang-Il Ahn,Jae-Yun Shim,Tae-Kyung Kim,Ji-Hun Choi,Hyun-Wook Kim,Dong-Heon Song,Young-Boong Kim,Ki-Hong Jeon,Yun-Sang Choi 한국축산식품학회 2018 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.38 No.4
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of pork and tuna levels on the quality characteristics of frankfurters and to establish a suitable percentage of added tuna. The levels of pork meat (PM) and yellow-fin tuna (YFT) in the test frankfurters were as follows: 100% PM (control), 90% PM+10% YFT (T1), 80% PM+20% YFT (T2), 70% PM+30% YFT (T3), 60% PM+40% YFT (T4), and 50% PM+50% YFT (T5). The pH of the frankfurter batters significantly decreased with increasing tuna levels, because the pH of the tuna is lower than that of the pork. The water holding capacity did not differ significantly in frankfurters containing up to 30% tuna, whereas that of the 40% tunacontaining frankfurter was significantly lower than the control. Cooking loss did not differ significantly. At up to 10% tuna, apparent viscosity did not differ significantly, whereas at 20% tuna, it was significantly lower than the control. Fat separation and total expressible fluid separation at up to 30% tuna did not differ from the control; however, when more than 30% was added, higher losses were observed. The hardness of frankfurters containing more than 40% tuna was lower than that of the control, but there was no significant difference in springiness. The overall acceptability of frankfurters manufactured with up to 30% tuna did not differ significantly from the control. These results suggest that the addition of 30% tuna does not affect the quality of frankfurters made from pork.

Kwang-Woo Kim,Jehan Kim,Young Duck Yun,Hyungju Ahn,Byoungseok Min,Na Hyung Kim,Seungyu Rah,Hyo-Yun Kim,Chae-Soon Lee,In Deuk Seo,Woul-Woo Lee,Hyeong Joo Choi,Kyeong Sik Jin 한국구조생물학회 2017 Biodesign Vol.5 No.1
BL4C SAXS at the Pohang Light Source II is a small-angle X-ray scattering beamline based on an in-vacuum undulator insertion device, Si(111) DCM, and toroidal focusing mirror. The beamline normally provides high-flux synchrotron radiation X-ray sources with energies from 10.3 to 20.6 keV and a 100 µm (vertical) × 300 µm (horizontal) full width at half-maximum focal spot. The analysis of the SAXS data would be facilitated by means of useful ancillary equipment. The design of the beamline, the key components, and its role are described.
