Central diabetes insipidus(DI) is a polyuric disorder characterized by a deficiency of circulating antidiuretic hormone. It may be resulted by any conditions that cause damage to neurohypophyseal system. Idiopathic cases constitute the major group of primary diabetes insipidus but one can postulate that perhaps the lack of reliable methods to investigate hypothalamus is responsible for this fact. Fourty patients with central diabetes insipidus were evaluated clinically, radiological ly and endocrinologically at Yonsei University Severance Hospital during the past 8 years and following results were obtained. 1) The male to female ratio was 1.2:1 and the highest incidence of central diabetes insipidus was in the third and fourth decades. 2) Daily mean urine output was 2~81, urine specific gravity 1.004±0.002, urine osmolarity 190±122mOsm/kg and serum osmolarity 297±41mOsm/kg, 3) The water deprivation test was performed in 22cases, among which 20cases(90.1%) had complete diabetes insipidus and 2cases(9.9%) haartial diabetes insipidus. 4) Of the 8cases who underwent sella coronal CT scan, 5cases(62.5%) had abnormal mass densities on the suprasella area. 5) Among 7 cases with suspicious idiopathic diabetes insipidus, basal serum prolactin levels were elevated in 4cases(57.1%), 6) Causes of central diabetes insipidus were idiopathic in 20cases(50%), surgery of the hypothalamopituitary area in 9 cases(22.5%), neoplastic or infiltrative lesions in 5cases(12.5%), and head injuries in 4cases. In conclusion, in cases with suspected idiopathic diabetes insipidus by conventional diagnostic methods, sella coronal CT scan might be useful to detect underlying minute lesions.

Background: Despite many reports on the skin aging factors using non-invasive methods, there is a need to identify reliable skin aging factors obtained in sufficient subjects and in a properly controlled environment. Objectives: To investigate the characteristics of facial skin of eight Asian countries and to confirm the aging parameters of 20- to 50-year-old Asians. Methods: The subjects consisted of 5,205 healthy males and females ranged from 20 to 59 years-old in South Korea, Mongolia, Taiwan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey, the Philippines, and China. Skin hydration, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), pore area, pH, elasticity, wrinkles, and skin color on the face were measured under the environmental conditions of specific relative temperature and humidity, controlled and maintained identically for each volunteer. Results: Elasticity, pore area, wrinkles, skin color, and TEWL on the face were correlated with age, but skin hydration and pH were not correlated with age. Elasticity, pore, and wrinkles parameters showed higher r-values than others. The r-value of elasticity was -0.740 in R2, -0.436 in R5, and -0.539 in R7 (p <0.01). The r-value of pores and wrinkles were 0.523 and 0.502, respectively. Conclusion: The present study suggests that the aging parameters of the facial skin that are highly correlated with early aging in 5,205 subjects are elasticity, area of pores, and wrinkles.

The elderly people are often afflicted with chronic illnesses of which depression and dementia comprise substantial proportion. The authors tried to figure out the impact of depression and dementia on the quality of life of elderly. 1,300 community residents over 65 years of age were selected by random sampling. Using Geriatric Mental State-Automated Geriatric Examination for Computer Assisted Taxonomy, the authors selected 3 groups of subjects, namely dementia group (N=113), depression group (N=157), normal control group (N=289). The 3 groups of subjects were examined with General Health Questionnaire 12-Quality of Life, Geriatric Depression Scale, Mini-Mental State Exam-K, and Physical Self-Maintenance Scale. The results were compared between groups and the correlations of each scales were examined. The quality of life was lower in the older, female, lower educational groups. The quality of life was significantly lower in dementia group and depression group than in normal elderly group. The subjective quality of life of depressed elderly got lower with increasing severity of depression. Demented elderly had low quality of life but no correlation was found between subjective quality of life and severity of depression. The score of Mini-Mental State Exam-K was found to have significant correlation with the quality of life in demented group. The quality of life of normal elderly and those with dementia had significant correlation with Physical Self-Maintenance Scale. Conclusively, the quality of life was decreased in both normal elderly group and dementia group. The severity of depressive symptoms were correlated with the decrease of quality of life in depression group, whereas the degree of cognitive impairment had significant correlation with quality of life in dementia group. Therefore, the subjective quality of life must be considered in the treatment of the depression and dementia, and further study about the relation between psychopathology and the various aspects of living and the quality of life in the elderly is needed.

Similar to macromolecular crystallography (MX), radiography uses X-rays to reveal structures, however, of macro objects, which can be several orders of magnitude larger in size than the subjects of MX. Beamline 6C Bio Medical Imaging of the Pohang Light Source-II (PLS-II) utilizes synchrotron radiation X-rays to implement parallel beam projection radiography. Major applications are virtual anatomy of small animals and plants, non-invasive physiological monitoring and 3D histology in biology and medicine. Uses in material science and defect analysis of industrial products are also becoming popular. In this review, the use of the beamline is introduced including sample preparation, data acquisition and a workflow for 3D image reconstruction, visualization and analysis. For biologists who are familiar with MX, a brief comparison has been made between the two techniques. The mechanisms for spatial resolution determination and contrast formation in the parallel beam projection radiography are also presented.
