Objectives:The study was performed to evaluate the effects of ElectroMagnetic Therapy treatment for patients suffering from cervicogenic headaches. Methods:After receiving medical examination at the Department of Oriental Rehabilitation Medicine, College of Oriental Medicine, Dong-Guk University from November 1, 2006 to June 5, 2007, 34 patients with cervicogenic headache were devided into two groups(experimental vs control).Experimental group(n=18) was treated with both Pulsed ElectroMagnetic therapy(PEMT) and acupuncture, control group(n=16) was treated with acupuncture only. Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) was measured as a primary outcome measure, and was statistically analyzed using t-test.Results:Experimental group was effective than control group in pain intensity using VAS, because PEMT plus acupuncture was more effective than acupuncture only(p<0.05).Conclusions:The results indicate that the pulsed electromagnetic therapy is effective on treating cervicogenic headaches.

Behcet`s disease is a recurring illness characterized by the triple symptom complex of aphthous stomatitis, genital ulceration, and uveitis. The disease is multisystemic disorder with involvement of skin, gastrointestinal tract, blood vessels, central nervous system, joints, and epididymis. Vascular involvement of Behcet`s disease affects both arteries and veins and blood vessels of all sizes. Periosteal new bone formation is one feature of hypertrophic osteoarthropathy. Other features are clubbing and arthritis. Periosteal new bone formation on the bones of the lower extremities without other features of hypertrophic osteoarthropathy has been reported in patients with varicose veins, vitamin A intoxication, infantile cortical hyperostosis, tuberous sclerosis, congenital syphilis and chronic renal failure with hyperparathyroidism, and chronic venous insufficiency. However, periosteal new bone formation has not, to our knowledge, been described in patients with Behcet`s disease yet although similar findings are occasionally noted in polyarteritis nodosa. We report a case of Behcet`s disease complicated by leg swelling with periosteal new bone formation of right lower leg.

Background/Aims: The Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) cagA, vacA, and ieeA are considered to be important virulence factors that have been implicated in the development of duodenal ulcers. It was reported that the presence of IS605 elements might be respon

Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) is an interleukin-7-like cytokine that is an important trigger and initiator of many allergic diseases. TSLP promotes a T-helper type 2 (Th2) cytokine response that can be pathological. A relationship is formed both at the induction phase of the Th2 response through polarization of dendritic cells to drive Th2 cell differentiation and at the effector phase of the response, by promoting the expansion of activated T cells and their secretion of Th2 cytokines and TSLP. In transgenic mice with TSLP overexpression, it has been reported that TSLP leads to the development of mixed cryoglobulinemic membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis. In addition, TSLP can play an important role in the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy and systemic lupus erythematosus-related nephritis. From our knowledge of the role of TSLP in the kidney, further studies including the discovery of new therapies need to be considered based on the relationship between TSLP and glomerulonephritis.

Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon severe soft tissue infection characterized by extensive necrosis of superficial fascia with widespread involvement of the surrounding tissues and concurrent systemic toxicity. It is accompanied by local pain, fever and systemic toxicity and is rapidly progressive and destructive infection and is often fetal if not promptly recognized and aggressively treated. It is usually caused by mixed aerobic-anaerobic bacteria. It can affect any part of the body but is most common on the extremities, perineum and abdominal wall, especially the leg. Predisposing factors include diabetes mellitus, alcoholism, intravenous drug abusers, abdominal surgery, perineal infection. Tissue damage and systemic toxicity are believed to result from the release of endogenous cytokines and bacterial toxins. Early recognition, broad-spectrum antibiotics coverage and adequate debridement has been associated with improved survival. We report a case of necrotizing fasciitis caused by E. coli after operation.

We analysed 20 cases of clavicular nonunions, treated by internal fixation with plate and bone graft at the Pohang St. Marry's Hospital between 1993 and 1997. Among them, sixteen patients had been treated with conservative method and four with surgery initially. Radiologically, seventeen nonunions were atrophic and three hypertrophic. Interposition of the injured soft tissue, inadequate reduction and insecure fixation were etiologic factors of nonunion in this study. The complete unionswere achieved in eighteen by plating with iliac bone graft and in two by intramedullary fixation with S-pin or Rush-pin each The average time for union was 14.2 weeks. The average length of follow-up was 16.5 months. The complications were limitation of motion in three patients and brachial plexus injury in one. Associated symptoms of the nonunion including pain disappeared in all patients. In this study, we discuss the cause and treatment of clavicular nonunion with specific attention to the rigid internal fixation and the outcome of treatment. We concluded that symptomatic nonunion of the clavicle could be treated by operation, and rigid internal fixation with plate and bone grafts are thought to be a reliable treatment for the nonunion of the clavicle.
