This study was conducted to determine whether low intensity regular exercise following steroid treatment could attenuate steroid-induced muscle atrophy. Thirty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 165~175g were divided into six groups;control group(C), dexamethasone administration group(D), sedentary after normal saline administration group(C+Se), exercise after normal saline administration group(C+Ex), sedentary group after dexamethasone administration(D+Se), exercise group after dexamethasone administration(D+Ex). Either dexamethasone(5mg/kg) or normal saline was injected for 7days accordingly. Exercise was started at 10m/min on the 10?grade treadmill and gradually increased up to 15m/min by the 7th day for 60minutes/day(20min×3). The data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test using the SPSS WIN 9.0 program. Body weight, muscle weight and myofibrillar protein content of both plantaris and gastrocnemius, Type I, II muscle fiber cross-sectional area of plantaris, and Type II muscle fiber cross-sectional area of gastrocnemis in D group were significantly lower than those of C group(p<.05) respectively. Hindlimb muscle weight, myofibrillar protein content of both plantaris and gastrocnemius, Type I muscle fiber cross-sectional area of soleus and Type I, II muscle fiber cross-sectional area of plantaris in D+Ex group tended to increase compared to those of D+Se group. Myofibrillar protein content of both plantaris and gastrocnemius, Type I muscle fiber cross-sectional area of plantaris in D+Ex group tended to increase compared to those of C+Se group. Based on these results, it is suggested that regular low-intensity exercise during recovery period after steroid treatment might facilitate the recovery from steroid-induced muscle atrophy.

Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the status of dental care in underserved areas of Korea. Methods: This study targeted 229 cities in Korea. The analytical index was revised and supplemented with variables related to dental care, and the “oral health level” indexes were further selected to provide a total of 20 analytical indexes. All selected indexes were converted into T scores (cited by the Korea Health Promotion Institute) and subjectively weighted. Finally, the regional oral health indices and areas were derived. PASW Statistics 25.0 (SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL, USA) was used to analyze descriptive statistics. Results: Gyeongbuk Cheongsong-gun had the highest dental underserved index. The city with the highest regional oral health underserved index was Jeonnam Shinan-gun. Daegu Jung-gu had the lowest dental underserved index and regional oral health underserved index. Regional gaps existed between dental care and the regional oral health underserved index according to the city province (p<0.001). Conclusions: To continuously evaluate oral health conditions and projects centered on vulnerable areas, it is necessary to develop indicators to derive vulnerable areas for dental care and to develop effective public dental policies.

Nine cattle among 18 in a native Korean herd died or were euthanized within 3 days. The affected cattle showed cowshed. The pigs and dogs had been fed leftover food originating from nearby restaurants, and the cattle could presumably reach the contaminated food in the pig troughs. Necropsy revealed a few chicken bones and red pepper pieces as well as large amounts of grain and rice straw hay mixed in the rumen. Botulism type D was isolated in the ruminal contents of one of the cattle. We speculated that the outbreak was associated with the cattle incidentally eating presumably contaminated leftover food from the pig trough.

목적 : 최근 전세계적으로 지역사회획득 메티실린내성 황색포도알균(community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, CA-MRSA)의 보고가 증가하고 있다. 하지만, 우리나라에서는 CA-MRSA 감염증에 대한 증례보고만 있을 뿐 아직까지 체계적인 연구결과가 없는 실정이다. 저자들은 국내에서 CA-MRSA의 빈도, 감염증의 임상적 양상, 분리된 균주의 항균제내성 양상을 조사하였다. 재료 및 방법 : 2005년 1월부터 2005년 6월까지 7개 병원에서 MRSA가 분리된 환자의 명단을 파악한 후 의무기록지와 건강보험심사평가원의 자료를 검토하였다. 외래나 응급실에서 혹은 입원 후 72시간 이내에 균주가 분리되고 MRSA 획득과 관련된 위험인자가 없는 경우 CA-MRSA로 정의하였으며, 분리된 균주의 임상적 의미에 따라 원인병원체(pathogen), 집락화(colonizer), 미결정(undetermined)으로 분류하였다. Penicillin과 oxacillin을 제외하고 3개 이상의 다른 계열 항균제에 내성이면 다제내성으로 정의하였다. 결과 : 연구기간동안 총 3,251주의 황색포도알균이 분리되었으며, 이 중 MRSA는 1,900주(58.4%)였다. MRSA 가운데 CA-MRSA는 114주(6.0%) 였으며, 이들이 분리된 부위는 귀(62주), 비뇨기계(14주), 피부 및 연부조직(11주), 호흡기계(10주), 혈액(3주) 등이었다. CA-MRSA 균주 가운데 집락균은 22주, 원인병원체는 22주였으며, 나머지 균주에 대해서는 그 임상적 의미를 결정할 수 없었다. 항균제 감수성 검사를 시행한 73균주 중 47주(64.4%)는 다제내성이었다. CA-MRSA 감염증 22예 중 피부 및 연부조직 감염(9예)과 중이염/외이도염(9예)이 가장 흔하였다. 침습적 감염증(invasive infection)은 4명(원발성 균혈증 3예, 감염성 관절염 1예)에서 확인되었지만, CA-MRSA 감염증으로 사망한 환자는 없었다. 결론 : 병원내 감염증에서는 MRSA가 심각한 문제이지만, 아직까지 지역사회 감염증에서 CA-MRSA는 흔하지 않았다. Background : Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection has emerged in patients who do not have the established risk factors. In Korea, little is known about the epidemiology and clinical features of community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA). Material and Methods : Clinical microbiology laboratory databases of 7 hospitals were reviewed to identify the patients from whom MRSA was isolated during the period of January to July 2005. Only one isolate per patient was enrolled. In order to identify the risk factors of MRSA acquisition, the medical records and the Health Insurance Review Agency databases were reviewed. CA-MRSA was defined as MRSA isolated from patient without established risk factors. We analyzed patient demographics, underlying medical conditions, characteristics of infection, and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles. Results : Of total 3,251 S. aureus isolates, 1900 (58.4%) were MRSAs. Of the MRSA isolates, 114 (6.0%) were CA-MRSA. Of 114 CA-MRSA isolates, 22 (19.3%) were colonizers, 22 (19.3%) were pathogens, and the clinical significance of remaining 70 (61.4%) could not be determined. Median age of the 22 patients with CA-MRSA disease was 47 years. Nine patients had skin and soft tissue infections, 9 ear infections, 3 bacteremia, 1 septic arthritis. Seven patients had underlying medical disease. None died of the CA-MRSA infections. Of the 73 isolates of CA-MRSA, 47 (64.4%) were resistant to more than 3 classes of antibiotics besides β-lactams. Conclusion : Although MRSA is highly prevalent among hospital-associated S. aureus infection, CA-MRSA infections are not common.

Background/Aims: Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is often performed therapeutically, and antithrombotic treatment is required for at least 12 months after stent implantation. However, the development of post-PCI upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) increases morbidity and mortality. We investigated the incidence and risk factors for UGIB in Korean patients within 1 year after PCI. Methods: The medical records of 3,541 patients who had undergone PCI between January 2006 and June 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. We identified 40 cases of UGIB. We analyzed the incidence and clinical risk factors associated with UGIB occurring within 1 year after PCI by comparing the results for each case to matched controls. The propensity score matching method using age and sex was utilized. Results: UGIB occurred in 40 patients (1.1%). Two independent risk factors for UGIB were a history of peptic ulcer disease (odds ratio [OR], 12.68; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.70 to 59.66; p=0.001) and the use of anticoagulants (OR, 7.76; 95% CI, 2.10 to 28.66; p=0.002). Conclusions: UGIB after PCI occurred at a rate of 1.1% in the study population. Clinicians must remain vigilant for the possibility of UGIB after PCI and should consider performing timely endoscopy in patients who have undergone PCI and are suspected of having an UGIB. 2006년부터 2008년까지 국내로 회귀하는 연어(O. keta)의 소상위치, 암수 및 근육 부위별 아니사키스형 유충의 감염상을 조사하였다. 3년 동안 강에서 채집된 연어 17마리와 바다에서 채집된 13마리의 아니사키스형 유충의 감염율을 조사한 결과, 강에서 채집된 연어의 수컷 및 암컷은 마리 당 아니사키스형 유충이 각각 평균 98±27 및 103±27 마리씩 감염되어져 있었다. 바다에서 채집된 연어의 수컷 및 암컷은 마리 당 아니사키스형 유충이 각각 평균 63±18 및 108±17마리씩 감염되어져 있었고, 암수 및 소상위치간의 아니사키스형 유충의 감염 마리수에서 통계학적 차이는 없는 것으로 나타났다. 아니사키스형 유충의 근육 부위별로 조사하면 복강내측 근육 (abdominal muscle)에 85%가 기생하며, 내장기관에는 거의 유충이 발견되지 않았다. 동정된 아니사키스형 유충은 Anisakis type이 74%며, 나머지는 Contracacecum type로 분류되었다. 연어 근육내에서 아니사키스형 유충의 저온처리에 따른 생존율을 조사하였을시에 최소 6시간 이상의 냉동보존 (-20℃)만이 아니사키스형 유충이 죽는다는 사실을 알 수 있었다. The infestation status of anisakid type larvae was investigated in migrating chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), with different condition (captured area, sex, body portion) during 2006~2008. The mean infection number of anisakid larvae per individual female and male fish captured from Namdae river was 98±27, 103±27, respectively. The mean infection number of anisakid larvae per individual female and male fish captured from the coastal area of Yangyang was 63±18 and 108±17, respectively. The anisakid larvae were mainly found in abdominal muscles (85%) but only a little in the visceral portion. Two types of anisakid larvae (A. simplex, Contracaecum type) were identified but other anisakid larvae were not detected. To investigate the effect of storing temperature on the viability of anisakid larvae, the section of abdominal muscle were stored at different temperature (room temperature, 4℃, -20℃, -80℃). As a result, it was necessary to store at -20℃ for more than 6 hrs to kill the larvae. The present results revealed that chum salmon caught in Korea are heavily infected with anisakid larvae, mainly in the abdominal muscle, and A. simplex was dominantly found in this study.

The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of eight antibiotics against Edwardsiella tarda 49 strains isolated from olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) was determined by the broth microdilution method. E. tarda showed 38.8% and 61.2% resistance to ampicillin and amoxicillin. Both resistance rates of E. tarda were 4.1% against ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin. The MIC50 values of oxytetracycline, amoxicillin and oxolinic acid were 64 ㎍/㎖, 32 ㎍/㎖and 4 ㎍/㎖. The MIC50 value to ciprofloxacin was 0.25 ㎍/㎖which was lowest among eight antibiotics tested.

3D 프린팅은 고체, 액체 및 분말 형태의 소재를 분사 혹은 적층하여 3차원 입체물을 제조하는 방식을 사용함에 따라, 지난 수 년 동안 산업분야 뿐만 아니라 일반 대중에 대한 3D 프린팅의 접근성이 크게 증가하였다. PLA(polylactic acid)는 우수한 기계적 성질, 재생 가능성, 생분해성 그리고 상대적으로 저렴한 비용을 가지고 있는 대표적인 바이오폴리머(biopolymer)로 3D 프린터용 필라멘트의 원료로 사용되며 석유화학 유래의 고분자 재료를 대체할 수 있는 대안으로 떠오르고 있다. 반면, PLA와 같은 생분해성 고분자는 충격저항이 낮고 밀도가 높기 때문에 포장 및 건축 사업과 같은 응용 분야에서 제한적으로 이용되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 MFC와 리그닌 첨가에 따른 3D 프린터용 필라멘트 물성을 비교하기 위해 수행되었다. MFC와 리그닌 모두 분말 형태로 제조하여 PLA 대비 0.5, 1, 2., 5 wt%로 투입하였으며 사용된 PLA는 진공 건조하여 사용하였다. 혼합 시료는 사출기의 150℃-160℃사이로 제조하여 인장강도를 측정하였으며 MFC와 리그닌의 분산성을 알아보기 위해 시료의 표면 및 단면을 관찰하였다. 그 결과 사출 온도에 따른 인장강도의 차이를 관찰하였으며 150℃에서 필라멘트를 제조하였을 때 MFC와 리그닌의 모든 조건에서 PLA만으로 제조한 필라멘트보다 높은 인장강도를 나타내었다. 또한 리그닌을 첨가함에 따라 인장강도가 감소하는 경향을 나타냈으며 MFC 첨가량에 따른 강도 차이는 그게 나타나지 않았다.
