This study was conducted to examine the effect of corn (Zea mays L.) - soybean (Glycine max L.) silage prepared by intercropping method on the nutritive value of the silage, in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics, dry matter degradability, as well as milk yield and milk composition of dairy cows. In a couple of experiments intercropped corn-soybean silage (CSBS) was compared with corn silage (CS) and/or Italian ryegrass hay (IRG). Numerically, CSBS had higher crude protein, ether extract, and lactic acid contents compared to CS. In vitro rumen fermentation analysis demonstrated that up to a 24-h incubation period, both CS and CSBS showed higher total gas production, ammonia N concentration, and dry matter degradability compared to IRG (p<0.05). The investigation on animals was conducted in a commercial dairy farm located in Gyeongju, South Korea, employing 42 Holstein cows that were divided into 2 group treatments: CS and CSBS in a completely randomized design. Although no significant difference was observed in milk yield, animals fed on CSBS showed significantly higher milk protein (p<0.05) and milk fat content (p<0.01), compared to animals fed on CS. Taken together, our findings indicate that corn-soybean silage that is cultivated, harvested, and prepared through intercropping can improve the protein content of the silage, and can also enhance in vitro rumen fermentation, dry matter degradability, and performance of dairy cattle.

매년 여행을 즐기는 여행객들의 수가 꾸준히 증가하고 있으며, 이러한 추세는 해외여행 뿐 아니라 국내 여행에서도 나타나고 있다. 국내 여행을 즐기는 여행객 수의 증가는 매우 다양하고 복합적인 요인들에 의해 이루어지고 있는 것이 사실이나, 국내 여행객들의 절대 다수는 해외여행과는 달리 패키지 형태 보다는 자유여행 형태의 여행을 선호하고 있다. 이는 해외 여행지 대비 국내 여행지가 여행객들이 취득 및 분석할 수 있는 정보의 접근성이 훨씬 높고 정보의 양 역시 풍부하다는 것에서 기인한다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 정보 접근의 용이성 및 정보량의 풍요성은 오히려 자유여행을 즐기고자 하는 여행객들이 여행코스 및 숙소를 정하는데 많은 시간을 투자하게 되는 요인으로 작용하고 있다. 때문에 이러한 단점을 해결하고자 본 논문에서 제안하는 애플리케이션은 국내 여행객들이 편리하고 손쉽게 국내 여행을 즐길 수 있도록 여행코스 및 숙소를 지정할 수 있는 기능을 제공한다. 이를 위해, 제안하는 애플리케이션에서는 국내 여행과 관련된 다양한 정보들을 각종 포털 사이트와 SNS에서 수집하고, 이를 기반으로 사용자 선호 정보와의 매칭을 통해 맞춤형 여행 코스 제안 및 숙소 예약 기능을 제공한다. 이를 통해, 국내 여행을 즐기는 여행객들에게 편리함을 제공하고, 국내 여행객 수의 증가를 기대할 수 있다.

<P>A surface-enhanced Raman scattering-based lateral flow assay (SERS-LFA) technique has been developed for the rapid and accurate diagnosis of scrub typhus. Lateral flow kits for the detection of <I>O. tsutsugamushi</I> IgG (scrub typhus biomarker) were fabricated, and the calibration curve for various standard clinical sera concentrations were obtained by Raman measurements. The clinical sera titer values were determined by fitting the Raman data to the calibration curve. To assess the clinical feasibility of the proposed method, SERS-LFA assays were performed on 40 clinical samples. The results showed good agreement with those of the standard indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) method. SERS-LFA has many advantages over IFA including the less sample volume, simpler assay steps, shorter assay time, more systematic quantitative analysis, and longer assay lifetime. As SERS strips can be easily integrated with a miniaturized Raman spectrophotometer, field serodiagnosis is also more feasible.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

The organic complexing agents such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), and isosaccharinic acid (ISA) can enhance the radionuclides’ solubility and have the potential to induce the acceleration of radionuclides’ mobility to a far-field from the radioactive waste repository. Hence, it is essential to evaluate the effect of organic complexing agents on radionuclide solubility through experimental analysis under similar conditions to those at the radioactive waste disposal site. In this study, five radionuclides (cesium, cobalt, strontium, iodine, and uranium) and three organic complexing agents (EDTA, NTA, and ISA) were selected as model substances. To simulate environmental conditions, the groundwater was collected near the repository and applied for solubility experiments. The solubility experiments were carried out under various ranges of pHs (7, 9, 11, and 13), temperatures (10°C, 20°C, and 40°C), and concentrations of organic complexing agents (0, 10-5, 10-4, 10-3, and 10-2 M). Experimental results showed that the presence of organic complexing agents significantly increased the solubility of the radionuclides. Cobalt and strontium had high solubility enhancement factors, even at low concentrations of organic complexing agents. We also developed a support vector machine (SVM) model using some of the experimental data and validated it using the rest of the solubility data. The root mean square error (RMSE) in the training and validation sets was 0.012 and 0.016, respectively. The SVM model allowed us to estimate the solubility value under untested conditions (e.g., pH 12, temperature 30°C, ISA 5×10-4 M). Therefore, our experimental solubility data and the SVM model can be used to predict radionuclide solubility and solubility enhancement by organic complexing agents under various conditions.

This study was conducted to investigate the antibacterial, antioxidant, and in vitro greenhouse gas mitigation activities of fermented Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi extract. Seven starter cultures were used, comprising four of lactic acid bacteria and three of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Ten grams of S. baicalensis Georgi powder was diluted in 90 mL autoclaved MRS broth. Each seed culture was inoculated with 3-10% (v/v) S. baicalensis Georgi MRS broth and incubated at 30℃ for 48 h. Among the starter cultures used, only Lactobacillus plantarum EJ43 could withstand the fermentation conditions. This fermentation broth was dried and extracted with ethanol to assess its antibacterial, antioxidant, and in vitro methane mitigation activities. The extract of S. baicalensis Georgi fermented by L. plantarum EJ43 (SBLp) showed higher antibacterial activity (bigger clear zone) compared to the unfermented S. baicalensis Georgi extract (SB0). SBLp also presented 1.2 folds higher antioxidant activity than SB0. During in vitro rumen fermentation, SBLp showed reduction in methane production compared to SB0 or the control. In conclusion, fermentation by L. plantarum EJ43 may enhance antibacterial and antioxidant activities of S. baicalensis Georgi and decrease enteric methane production.
Determination of Point of Sale and Consumption for Hanwoo Beef Based on Quality Grade and Aging Time

This study aimed to determine the suitable point of sale and consumption of different quality grade (QG) Hanwoo short loin during aging period, based on physicochemical, sensory, and microbiological quality. Short loins obtained from the carcasses of 13 Hanwoo steers and 2 bulls with 5 different QGs (1++, 1+, 1, 2, and 3) were analyzed over 28 d. QG and aging time had significant effect on water holding capacity, color, shear force, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVBN) content, and sensory traits. Higher QG groups generally exhibited a lower shear force, nucleotide content, and water holding capacity, and higher L*, a*, and b* values. Acceptable tenderness (shear force <5.4 kg) in QG 1++, 1+, 1, and 2 was achieved on days 7, 14, 16, and 18, respectively, and QG 3 showed a shear force of 6.8 kg, even after 28 d. Regardless of QG, TVBN content below threshold levels (20–30 mg%) was observed throughout the 28 d aging period, while total plate counts above 7 Log CFU/g were seen at 21 d. In conclusion, it is recommended that Hanwoo beef with QG 1++, 1+, and intermediate QG (1 and 2) should be sold or consumed between 7 and 21, 14 and 21, 16 and 21 d, respectively. Beef with QG 3 should be sold or consumed within 21 d, based on microbial growth, even though it has not achieved desirable tenderness. For this reason, an additional tenderizing process is recommended before this beef is ready for consumption.
