The fire at Joong-Ang Ro station of Daegu happened It might be ended as fire happening but proceeded to the disaster giving numerous damage because of the incomplete system of disaster prevention we had taken the lack of understanding and specialization about When Joong-Ang Ro station was restored, situation involved about volunteer system is that some of volunteer teams went back in a few days and activity of volunteers wasn't continued until the restoration was completed Because the volunteer system is thought as a field of social well-being and it was rarely focused on disaster, that situation appeared This paper shows the situation of support and management of volunteers during restoring Joong-Ang Ro station of Deagu There are comparison and analysis of support and management for volunteer among the cases of domestic disaster and foreign one in this paper to suggest the efficient support and management system for volunteer in disaster

To evaluate the functional alteration of immunoglobulin in diabetic patients, serum glycosylated immunoglobulin G and the opsonization index of 27 diabetic patients and normal controls were measured. The results were as follows; 1. In diabetic patients, the level of glycosylated immunoglobulin G was higher and the opsonization index lower than that of the normal controls. 2. Glycosylated immunoglobulin G had a reverse relationship with the opsonization index(r= -0.71) 3. The level of glycosylated immunoglobulin G was not different from the diabetic retinopathy group and the diabetic neuropathy group but was elevated in diabetic patients with infections. 4. Glycosylated immunoglobulin in the low basal insulin group was higher than that of the normal basal insulin group in diabetic patients. So, the high level of glycosylated immunoglobulin G plays a role in the functional defect of immunoglobulin G in diabetic patients.

Objectives : The purpose of this study is to find out the relationship between the traumatic experiences and the prevalence of PTSD among North Korean refugees in South Korea. Methods : Two hundred North Korean refugees in South Korea were voluntarily participated. Researchers conducted face-to-face interviews and assisted defectors in performing a self-report assessment of this survey. The study questionnaire consisted of demographic characteristics, Traumatic Experiences Scale for North Korean Defectors, and PTSD part of the Stmctured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R Korean version. Results : Prevalence rate of PTSD in defectors was 29.5%, with a higher rate for women. In factor analysis, the 25 items of traumatic events experienced in North Korea were divided into three factors: physical trauma, Political-ideological trauma, and family-related trauma. In addition, the 19 items of traumatic events during defection were grouped into four factors : physical trauma, discovery and capture-related trauma, family-related trauma, and betrayal-related trauma. In multi-factorial logistic regression analysis, family-related trauma in North Korea had a significant odds ratio. Conclusion : Family-related trauma experienced in North Korea is related to the prevalence of PTSD among North Korean refugees in South Korea.

북한탈북자들의 남한사회 적응에 관한 연구

The authors interviewed with 21 North Korean defectors who defected from North Korea in 1990-1995 and investigated their adjustment to South Korean society. The main categories of their problems in adjustment were a poor social network, financial difficulties, problems in social competency, problems resulting from their indoctrinated way of thinking, some psychological problems such as excessive self-consciousness and guilty feelings, and some social-structural problems such as poor education system in the government shelter. But, generally speaking, inspite of their problems, they have adjusted to South Korea society rather successfully. In the view of short term adjustment, the reasons for their success were thought to be the characteristics and merits of a capitalistic economy ; their compliant personalities resulting from an educational system that emphasized obedience to authority and Kim Il Sung ; and the dualism of North Korean life. Four points were discussed to assist a successful adjustment in the long term; Fostering of the ability to make individual choices with internal principles, overcoming a judgemental, moralizing attitude, overcoming of overfull thought-centered attitude and rebounding thought-lacking attitude, overcoming the effect of negative collectivism. Three things have been suggested to foster their healthy adjustment ; development and running of resocialization program for the each period of settlement ; building up a network of accessible support organizations who work for the adjustment of defectors ; systemic studies of North Korean people and defectors for the successful adjustment to unified Korean society. It is said that the division of Korean people has been the most tragic thing happen to Korea. But there can be a greater tragedy and that would be the unification of land but not the unification of people. Failure to understand the real problems of the North Korean population can potentially produce conflicts and confusion which can only lead to further re-division and greater tragedy. It is very important to study the adjustment to problems of North Korean defectors to help prepare for the unification of the Korean people.

Inhibition of Histone Deacetylase Activity Diminishes Pressure Overloaded Cardiac Hypertrophy in Mice

To explore the role of histone deactylase (HDAC) activation in an in vivo model of hypertrophy, we studied the effects of Trichostatin A (TSA). TSA subjected to thoracic aortic banding (TAB)-induced pressure stress in mice. In histological observations, TAB in treated mice showed a significant hypertrophic response, whereas the sham operation remained nearly normal structure with partially blunted hypertrophy. TSA treatment had no effect (measured as HW/BW) on sham-operated animals. TAB animals treated with vehicle manifested a robust ~50% hypertrophic response (p<0.05 vs sham). TAB mice treated with 2 mg/kg/day TSA manifested a blunted growth responses, which was significantly diminished (p<0.05) compared with vehicle-treated TAB mice. TAB mice treated with a lower dose of TSA (0.5 mg/kg/day) manifested a similar blunting of hypertrophic growth (~25% increase in heart mass). Furthermore, to determine activity duration of TSA in vitro, 1 nM TSA was added to H9c2 cells. Histone acetylation was initiated at 4 hr after treatment, and it was peak up to 18 hr, then followed by significantly reduced to 30 hr. We also analyzed the expression of p53 following TSA treatment, wherein p53 expression was elevated at 4 hr, and it was maintained to 24 hr after treatment. ERK was activated at 8 hr, and maintained till 30 hr after treatment suggesting an intracellular signaling interaction between TSA and p53 expression Taken together, it is suggested that HDAC activation is required for pressure-overload growth of the heart. Eventually, these data suggest that histone acetylation may be a novel target for therapeutic intervention in pressure-overloaded cardiac hypertrophy.

Objective : This study is a follow-up of a first survey of 200 North Korean defectors who entered South Korea in 2001. The purpose of this study is to examine changes in the current prevalence of partial PTSD and full PTSD after 3 years and to evaluate related factors. Methods : This study followed up on 151 of the 200 North Korean defectors from our first survey. 20 interviewers conducted face-to-face interviews and assisted defectors in completing a self-report assessment. The traumatic events which participants with chronic PTSD and delayed onset PTSD experienced were then examined. Results : Over the 3 years, the current prevalence rate of partial PTSD was reduced from 31.8% to 5.3%, and the current prevalence rate of full PTSD was reduced from 27.2% to 4.0%. Of particular interest was that 88.8% of those diagnosed with full or partial PTSD in the first survey had recovered after 3 years. Conclusion : The current prevalence rate of partial and full PTSD rapidly decreased during 3 years.

Background Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) is defined as the reduction in susceptibility of Mycobacterium tuberculosis to Isoniazid and Rifampicin with or without resistance to additional drugs. The development of MDRTB is a big problem not only to the patients but also to the society given with its lower cure rate. The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence and the clinical features of MDRTB at university hospital and to establish the proper therapeutic plan. Method The incidence of MDRTB among 161 patients diagnosed as pulmonary tuberculosis by the AFB culture between January 1997 and June 2000, and the relationship of MDRTB with the history of previous therapy, associated diseases, bronchial involvement, and the consequence of treatment were studied retrospectively. Results Fortyeight (29.8%) patients were resistant to at least one drug and 27 (16.8%) patients suffered from MDRTB. Among the MDRTB patients, 22 had the previous history of therapy. More than 30 percent of all the patients had associated diseases, such diabetes mellitus, malignancy, chronic liver disease, systemic erythematous lupus or psychosis. Endobronchial lesions suggesting bronchial involvement of tuberculosis were found in 37 (35%) patients. Out of the 16 patients eligible for the efficacy of treatment among 27 MDRTB patients, nine (56.3%) patients were treated successfully but seven (43.8%) were failed. Conclusion Prevalence of MDRTB was high especially in patients with previous therapy history and the results of treatment was modest in this study. It is imperative to prevent the emergence of drug resistance by the proper delivery of chemotherapy and the development of new drugs.
