Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of propranolol on the left ventricular (LV) volume during CT coronary angiography. Materials and Methods: The LV volume of 252 normal Chinese subjects (126 subjects with propranolol medication and 126 age- and gender-matched Chinese subjects without medication) was estimated using 64 slices multi-detector CT (MDCT). The heart rate difference was analyzed by the logistic linear regression model with variables that included gender, age, body height, body weight, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and the dosage of propranolol. The following global LV functional parameters were calculated: the real-end diastolic volume (EDV), the real-end systolic volume (ESV) and the real-ejection fraction (EF). Results: The female subjects had a greater decrease of heart rate after taking propranolol. The difference of heart rate was negatively correlated with the dosage of propranolol. The real-EDV, the real-ESV and the real-EF ranged from 48.1 to 109 mL/m2, 6.1 to 57.1 mL/m2 and 41% to 88%, respectively. There was no significant difference in the SBP and DBP between the groups without and with propranolol medication (123 ± 17 and 80 ± 10 mmHg; 120 ± 14 and 80 ± 11 mmHg, respectively). The real-EDV showed no significant difference between these two groups, but the real-ESV and real-EF showed significant differences between these two groups (69.4 ± 9.3 and 70.6 ± 8.9 mL/m2; 23.5 ± 5.7 and 25.6 ± 3.7 mL/m2, 66.5 ± 5.1% and 63.5 ± 4.6%, respectively). Conclusion: The difference of heart rate is significantly influenced by gender and the dosage of propranolol. Propranolol will also increase the ESV, which contributes to a decreased EF, while the SBP, DBP and EDV are not statistically changed. In this paper, a biosensor based on a gated lateral bipolar junction transistor (BJT) is proposed. The gated lateral BJT can function as both a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) and a BJT. By using the self-assembled monolayer (SAM) method, the C-reactive protein antibodies were immobilized on the floating gate of the device as the sensing membrane. Through the experiments, the characteristics of the biosensor were analyzed in this study. According to the results, it is indicated that the gated lateral BJT device can be successfully applied as a biosensor. Additionally, we found that the sensitivity of the gated lateral BJT can be varied by adjusting the emitter (source) bias.

In this paper, we report the fabrication of a gated lateral bipolar junction transistor (LBJT) that is used as a sensor for volatile organic compound (VOC) gases. The proposed sensor was fabricated using a standard 0.35-µm process. The sensor can function as both a metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) and a BJT. The floating gate of the sensor was coated with a solvatochromic dye, which exhibits charge-transfer (CT) characteristics, as the sensing membrane of the sensor. The gated LBJT was driven under emitter (source) bias and base current control. Owing to the interaction of the VOC gas with the sensing membrane, the emitter (source) current value changed; this change was detected by using a semiconductor test and analyzer (STA-EL421, ELECS). Results show that our fabricated semiconductor-based gas sensor can be effectively used under normal temperature.

Yuan, Heng,Kim, Kyu Jin,Yeom, Se Hyuk,Kang, Byoung Ho,Wang, Bo,Kwon, Dae Hyuk,Kang, Shin Won Trans Tech Publications, Ltd. 2011 Advanced materials research Vol.320 No.-
<P>In this study, for assembling the nanorods which are synthesized by electrochemical deposition (ECD) method, computer simulation tool (AnsysTM) was used basis of dielectrophoresis (DEP) principle. Following the simulation results, the nanorods assembly device was designed and fabricated using semiconductor technology. Furthermore, an electric field was applied on the assembly electrode with AC bias and DC bias hybrid. The nanorods assembling experiments were carried out as the frequency of the electric field changed. The assembly results were confirmed using optical microscope.</P>

Objective: Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) catalyzes the metabolism of folate and nucleotides needed for DNA synthesis and repair. Variations in MTHFR functions likely play roles in the etiology of lung cancer (LC). So far, several studies between MTHFR C677T polymorphism and LC provide controversial or inconclusive results. Methods: To better assess the purported relationship, we performed a meta-analysis of 14 publications. Eligible studies were identified by searching the Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated to assess the association. Results: Overall, no significant association was detected between the MTHFR C677T polymorphism and LC risk, the same as in race subgroup. However, in the stratified analysis by histological type, significantly increased non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) risk was indicated (T-allele vs. C-allele: OR = 1.11, 95%CI = 1.03-1.19; TT vs. CC: OR = 1.24, 95%CI = 1.09-1.41; TC vs. CC: OR = 1.11, 95%CI = 1.03-1.20 and TT+TC vs. CC: OR = 1.09, 95%CI = 1.03-1.15). At the same time, ever-smokers who carried T-allele (TT+TC) had a 10% decreased LC risk compared with CC genotype carriers. Conclusions: Our study provided evidence that the MTHFR 677T null genotype may increase NSCLC risk, however, it may protect ever-smokers against LC risk. Future studies with large sample sizes are warranted to further evaluate this association in more detail.

Effects of chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) andhyriopsis cumingii polysaccharide (HCP) on the quality ofwheat flour and corresponding extruded flour productswere investigated in this work. The results showed thatboth COS and HCP are conducive to the improvement ofdough quality. Moreover, compared to control groupsamples, the moisture content, expansion ratio and oilabsorption rate of the samples were increased and thehardness were decreased with the addition of COS. Thesephenomena indicate the quality of extruded flour productsbecame better in the presence of COS as well. However,HCP has little or no effect on the quality of extruded flourproducts may be due to its degradation under high temperatureand pressure extrusion. COS with higher stabilityexhibited better improvement effects on the quality ofextruded flour products and showed a promising prospectfor application in extruded food industry.
