Display power analysis and design guidelines to reduce power consumption
Issa, Joseph The Korean Infomation Display Society 2012 Journal of information display Vol.13 No.4
Cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) are used to provide lighting for liquid crystal displays (LCDs). This paper presents a set of guidelines for measurement characterization and design to reduce the power consumption of CCFL LCD backlight inverters and panel electronics. The proposed methods aim to reduce the backlight power consumption by fine-tuning a back-light inverter for a specific LCD, using several methods. First, the authors describe their power measurement methodology; and next, they identify different areas for tuning a backlight inverter for a given display. The experiment results showed that power savings can range from 50 to 200mW if the backlight inverter is properly tuned. This paper also proposes an optimized configuration for light-emitting device (LED) panels to reduce power loss by selecting a LED with a specific input voltage and number of cells to help minimize power loss.

In these authors’ previous paper, it was shown that grey-level stability is one of the main drawbacks of the time-sequential stereoscopic 3D display. In the present study, it was demonstrated that a videoluminance meter can be used to rapidly and easily check the quality of such display. A dedicated pattern was applied to simultaneously check the effect of the grey level on the other eye and the effect of the temporal synchronization. The results were compared with those provided by a temporal model of the display, which was obtained by measuring its temporal behavior. The visual impact of the grey-level instabilities was precisely quantified, and they were found to be a major source of imperfections for the aforementioned display.
Simulation Study of an e-Beam Addressed Liquid Crystal Display for Projection
Zhou, Fushan,Yang, Deng-Ke,Molitor, R.J. The Korean Infomation Display Society 2002 Journal of information display Vol.3 No.4
We have carried out a simulation study on an e-beam addressed liquid crystal projection display in which the liquid crystal is switched by the electric field of the charge, produced by an electron beam, on the surface of the display. We calculated the electric field produced by the surface charge, the liquid crystal director configuration and the profile of the transmitted light. We studied the factors affecting the resolution of the display and the effect of pretilt angle on the performance of the display. The e-beam addressed liquid crystal projection display potentially has the advantages of high resolution and high brightness.
Stability-Enhanced Liquid Crystal Mode for Flexible Display Applications
Jung, Jong-Wook,Jang, Se-Jin,Lee, You-Jin,Kim, Hak-Rin,Jin, Min-Young,Kim, Jae-Hoon The Korean Infomation Display Society 2005 Journal of information display Vol.6 No.2
We demonstrated stability-enhanced liquid crystal (LC) displays using pixel-isolated LC mode in which LC molecules are isolated in pixel by horizontal polymer layer and vertical polymer wall. The device shows good electro-optic properties against external point or bending pressure due to the polymer structures. The polymer wall acts as supporting structure from mechanical pressure and prevents the cell gap from bending. Moreover, the polymer layer acts as an adhesive to ensure a tight attachment of the two substrates. We present herein various methods for producing polymer structures by using an anisotropic phase separation from LC and polymer composites or patterned micro-structures for stable flexible liquid crystal displays.

A complete analysis of the color-viewing-angle properties of different displays is presented herein using color-viewing-angle measurements made with a Fourier-optics system. The color gamut in the CIE u'v' chromatic plane was computed for all the viewing angles. The introduction of the lightness using the $L^*a^*b^*$ color space allowed a more precise analysis of the emissive properties of each display. The displays can be directly compared using a common reference. The viewing-angle dependence can be analyzed in full detail using the on-axis values as reference. The gravity center behavior and area of the color hull were computed for a more precise evaluation and comparison.
A full-color anaglyph three-dimensional display system using active color filter glasses
Kim, Jong-Hyun,Kim, Young-Hoon,Hong, Ji-Soo,Park, Gil-Bae,Hong, Kee-Hoon,Min, Sung-Wook,Lee, Byoung-Ho The Korean Infomation Display Society 2011 Journal of information display Vol.12 No.1
Presented herein is a novel stereoscopic three-dimensional (3D) display system with active color filter glasses. This system provides full-color 3D images by applying the time-multiplexing technique on the original anaglyph method. By switching between the opposite anaglyph statuses, a full-color anaglyph is presented. A liquid crystal panel from a 3D monitor serves as an active color filter operating at 120 Hz. A display panel and a color filter are connected to one graphic card as a dual-link system, for synchronization. To test the quality of this system, a left/right-eye image separation test and an experiment with stereoscopic images were carried out. Although there was some crosstalk and blur, the system, as expected, provided full-color 3D display. This system overcomes a monochromatic 3D image, which is the major weakness of the original anaglyph system.
A controller design for high-quality images on microcapsule active-matrix electrophoretic displays
Lu, Chi-Ming,Wey, Chin-Long The Korean Infomation Display Society 2012 Journal of information display Vol.13 No.1
Active-matrix electrophoretic display (AMEPD) is commonly used for the applications of smart handheld reading devices such as e-books and e-news. This paper presents a new reduced waveform lookup table storage method that reduces the associated lookup table by approximately 2n (n is the number of gray levels employed) times the conventional one. The paper also proposes a driving method for image display. The method provides high-speed performance for image display and also effectively eliminates the image residue, achieving high image quality. The prototyped controller was connected to a 6" AMEPD panel, whose excellent display quality demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed controller design.
Printed black internal conducting electrodes for flexible bistable cholesteric displays
Atkuri, H.M.,Lee, D.W.,Choi, B.O.,Kim, C.H.,West, J.L. The Korean Infomation Display Society 2011 Journal of information display Vol.12 No.2
We report flexible, bistable cholesteric displays utilizing polyester (PET) substrates with printed internal black electrodes. The black electrodes consist of carbon ink dispersed in butyl carbitol using a patented roll-to-roll gravure-offset printing. A transparent conducting polymer printed on PET serves as the counter electrode. The electro-optic material is a chiral nematic mixture dispersed in a low-concentration polymer binder. The device can be switched between scattering (black) and reflective (vibrant green) states upon application of an electric pulse. The internal black electrode enhances the contrast of the display and simplifies the roll-to-roll manufacture of flexible displays.
Analytical model of multiview autostereoscopic 3D display with a barrier or a lenticular plate
Saveljev, Vladimir,Palchikova, Irina The Korean Infomation Display Society 2018 Journal of information display Vol.19 No.2
A geometric model of an autostereoscopic 3D display is described herein. This model is based on the geometry of typical display devices and on the projective transformations that provide periodicity in the projective space. The formulas for the transformations between regions and spaces are provided. The model can be applied to the study of an operation of the multiview, integral, plenoptic, and light-field displays. A practical application considered in this paper is the multiview wavelet transform.
Multi-view Display with Hologram Screen using Three-dimensional Bragg Diffraction
Okamoto, Masaaki,Shimizu, Eiji The Korean Infomation Display Society 2002 Journal of information display Vol.3 No.3
Multi-view function is important to three-dimensional displays without dedicated glasses. It is the reason that the observers earnestly desire to change their positions freely. Multi-viewing is also principal to the reality of three-dimensional (3D) image displayed on the screen. The display of projection type has the advantage that the number of viewing points can be easily increased according to the number of projectors. The authors research on multi-view projection display with hologram screen. Powerful directionality of the diffracted beam from hologram screen is required unlike two-dimensional (2D) display. We developed a new method that all diffracted beams satisfied the same Bragg condition and became sufficiently bright to observe the 3D image under usual indoor light. The principle is based on the essential Bragg diffraction in the three-dimensional space. Owing to such three-dimensional Bragg diffraction we achieved an excellent hologram screen that could be multiple reconstructed in spite of single recording. This hologram screen is able to answer arbitrary numbers of viewing points within wide viewing zone. The distortion of 3D image becomes also sufficiently small with the method of dividing the cross angle between illumination and diffraction beam.
