        Effect of alcohol dehydrogenase 1C (ADH1C) genotype on vitamin A restriction and marbling in Korean native steers

        Objective: This work was to find the correlation of alcohol dehydrogenase 1C (ADH1C) genotype with vitamin A reduction and carcass traits during the vitamin A restriction period. Methods: In study 1, 60 Korean native steers were fed a diet (890 IU/kg) with 8,000 IU and 0 IU of supplemental premix vitamin A/kg of dry matter (DM) for control and treatment group, respectively. The levels of serum vitamin A were analyzed through high preparative performance liquid chromatography, and the ADH1C genotype was analyzed based on polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP; 78.1% TT type, 21.9% TC type); however, CC type was not found. Then, the interaction between ADH1C and carcass traits on the vitamin A restriction was investigated in study 2. A total of 136 Korean native steers were fed a diet that included 930 IU/kg vitamin A of DM. Results: Serum vitamin A in treatment was reduced to 112.4 IU/dL in steers with TT type of ADH1C, while for steers with TC type the concentration of serum vitamin A was dropped to 79.5 IU/dL (p<0.1) in study 1. This showed that TC type had the potential to lower serum vitamin A concentration during vitamin A restriction compared to TT type. In study 2 we found that eye muscle area, marbling and carcass weight in Korean native steers with TC type were higher than in steers with TT type (p<0.05). Conclusion: The interaction between vitamin A restriction and TC type of ADH1C gene could have the potential of increasing the marbling in Korean native steers. These results indicated that steers with TC type of the ADH1C gene were more sensitive to the change of serum vitamin A than TT types. Furthermore, this finding has the potential to enable a higher marbling score under the condition of vitamin A restriction in Korean native steers.

        Modeling, Analysis, and Enhanced Control of Modular Multilevel Converters with Asymmetric Arm Impedance for HVDC Applications

        Under the conventional control strategy, the asymmetry of arm impedances may result in the poor operating performance of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). For example, fundamental frequency oscillation and double frequency components may occur in the dc and ac sides, respectively; and submodule (SM) capacitor voltages among the arms may not be balanced. This study presents an enhanced control strategy to deal with these problems. A mathematical model of an MMC with asymmetric arm impedance is first established. The causes for the above phenomena are analyzed on the basis of the model. Subsequently, an enhanced current control with five integrated proportional integral resonant regulators is designed to protect the ac and dc terminal behavior of converters from asymmetric arm impedances. Furthermore, an enhanced capacitor voltage control is designed to balance the capacitor voltage among the arms with high efficiency and to decouple the ac side control, dc side control, and capacitor voltage balance control among the arms. The accuracy of the theoretical analysis and the effectiveness of the proposed enhanced control strategy are verified through simulation and experimental results.

        COMBINED CONTROL OF A REGENERATIVE BRAKING AND ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEM FOR HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLES

        Most parallel hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) employ both a hydraulic braking system and a regenerative braking system to provide enhanced braking performance and energy regeneration. A new design of a combined braking control strategy (CBCS) is presented in this paper. The design is based on a new method of HEV braking torque distribution that makes the hydraulic braking system work together with the regenerative braking system. The control system meets the requirements of a vehicle longitudinal braking performance and gets more regenerative energy charge back to the battery. In the described system, a logic threshold control strategy (LTCS) is developed to adjust the hydraulic braking torque dynamically, and a fuzzy logic control strategy (FCS) is applied to adjust the regenerative braking torque dynamically. With the control strategy, the hydraulic braking system and the regenerative braking system work synchronously to assure high regenerative efficiency and good braking performance, even on roads with a low adhesion coefficient when emergency braking is required. The proposed braking control strategy is steady and effective, as demonstrated by the experiment and the simulation.

        Etiology of Alzheimer`s disease (AD) is obscure, but neuroinflammation and accumulation of β-amyloid (Aβ) are implicated in pathogenesis of AD. We have shown anti-inflammatory and neurotrophic properties of obovatol, a biphenolic compound isolated from Magnolia obovata. In this study, we examined the effect of obovatol on cognitive deficits in two separate ADmodels: (i) mice that received intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) infusion of Aβ(1-42) (2.0 μg/mouse) and (ii) Tg2576 mice-expressing mutant human amyloid precursor protein (K670N, M671L). Injection of Aβ(1-42) into lateral ventricle caused memory impairments in the Morris water maze and passive avoidance tasks, being associated with neuroinflammation. Aβ(1-42) -induced abnormality was significantly attenuated by administration of obovatol. When we analyzed with Tg2576 mice, long-term treatment of obovatol (1 mg/kg/day for 3 months) significantly improved cognitive function. In parallel with the improvement, treatment suppressed astroglial activation, BACE1 expression and NF-κB activity in the transgenic mice. Furthermore, obovatol potently inhibited fibrillation of Aβin vitro in a dose-dependent manner, as determined by Thioflavin T fluorescence and electron microscopic analysis. In conclusion, our data demonstrated that obovatol prevented memory impairments in experimental AD models, which could be attributable to amelioration of neuroinflammation and amyloidogenesis by inhibition of NF-κB signaling pathway and anti-fibrillogenic activity of obovatol.

        C-type natriuretic peptide attenuates renal osteodystrophy through inhibition of FGF-23/MAPK signaling

        Renal osteodystrophy (ROD) occurs as early as chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage 2 and seems ubiquitous in almost all pediatric patients with CKD stage 5. Fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-23, a bone-derived endocrine regulator of phosphate homeostasis, is overexpressed in CKD and disturbs osteoblast differentiation and matrix mineralization. In contrast, C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) acts as a potent positive regulator of bone growth. In the present study, we infused CNP into uremic rats and observed whether CNP could attenuate ROD through the inhibition of FGF-23 cascades. In uremic rats, CNP administration significantly alleviated renal dysfunction, calcium phosphate metabolic disorders, hypovitaminosis D, secondary hyperparathyroidism, the decrease in bone turnover markers and retarded bone pathological progression. More importantly, within FGF-23/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling, the fibroblast growth factor receptor-1, Klotho and alternative (STAT-1/phospho-STAT-1) elements were upregulated by CNP, whereas FGF-23, RAF-1/phospho-RAF-1, and downstream (ERK/phospho-ERK and P38/phospho-P38) elements were paradoxically underexpressed in bone tissue. Therefore, CNP exerts a therapeutic effect on ROD through inhibition of FGF-23/MAPK signaling at the RAF-1 level.

      • Endostar Combined with Cisplatin Inhibits Tumor Growth and Lymphatic Metastasis of Lewis Lung Carcinoma Xenografts in Mice

        Objective: To investigate the effects of endostar, a recombined humanized endostatin, plus cisplatin on the growth, lymphangiogenesis and lymphatic metastasis of the Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) in mice. Methods: A tumor model were established in C57BL/6 mice by intravenious transplantation of LLC cells. Then the mice were randomized to receive administration with NS, endostar, cisplatin, or endostar plus cisplatin. After the mice were sacrificed, tumor multiplicity, tumor size and lymph node metastasis were assessed. Then the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor-c (VEGF-C) and podoplanin were determined by immunohistochemical staining. Results: Endostar plus cisplatin significantly suppressed tumor growth. lymphatic metastasis and prolonged survival time of the mice without obvious toxicity. The inhibition of lymphatic metastasis was associated with decreased microlymphatic vessel density (MLVD) and expression of VEGF-C. Conclusions: Endostar combined with cisplatin was more effective to suppress tumor growth and lymphatic metastasis than either agent alone. Thus this may provide a rational alternative for lung carcinoma treatment.

        2000년을 전후로 하여 중국 애니메이션에 나타난 유머요인 분석

        1963년 <피리 부는 목동(牧童短笛)>이 발표된 이래 1980년대까지 중국에서는 우수한 애니메이션들이 대거 제작되었다. 이 시기를 대표하는 수묵 애니메이션은 중국의 전통회화 기법을 적용하여 완성도 높은 표현과 중국 고유의 독창적 내용으로 국제적 명성을 얻었다. 수십 년이 지난 현재 중국에서는 정부의 지원 아래 매해 수십 편씩 애니메이션이 제작되고 있다. 그런데 비약적으로 급증하고 있는 애니메이션 작품 수에 비하여 작품의 성취와 국제적 영향력 면에서는 이전 시기를 넘어서지 못하고 있는 것으로 평가된다. 최근 중국에서 제작된 애니메이션 대부분은 흥행에 성공한 외국의 사례를 외형적으로 답습하는 경우가 많다. 이 작품들은 중국 내 흥행 면에서는 어느 정도 성과를 내고 있으나 국제적 공감을 얻고 있지는 못하며, 또한 중국 고유의 특성을 드러내지 못한 것으로 보인다. 애니메이션의 제작에서 미적, 산업적 성취를 위해서는 성공사례의 외형적 모방보다는 성공요인에 대한 면밀한 검토가 선행되어야 할 것이다. 본 논문에서는 애니메이션의 성취를 위한 요소 중 중요한 하나로 유머를 제기한다. 논의에 앞서 먼저 앙리 베르그송의 희극성 개념을 통해 유머요인의 일반적 정의를 서술하고, 이를 토대로 애니메이션의 유머요인을 정리하였다. 이렇게 도출된 분류체계를 중국 애니메이션에 대입하여 유머요인 분석의 틀로 사용하였다. 앙리 베르그송에 의하면 유머는 상황, 언어, 성격의 요인으로 구분된다. 본 연구에서는 이에 기반 하면서도 애니메이션 매체의 특수성을 고려하여 시각, 상황, 청각적 요인으로 분류하였다. 이는 언어표현이 중시되는 이전 매체에 비하여 다양한 청각적 요소에 의해 이루어지며 무엇보다 시각적요소가 강조되는 애니메이션의 매체특성에 따른 것이다. 이 연구에서는 중국 애니메이션이 2000년을 전후하여 표현방식에 차이가 나는 것에 주목하고 대표작으로 <대뇨천궁(大?天宮)>과 <세 명의 승려(三?和?)>, <시양양과 후이타이랑의 비마국 대모험(喜羊羊?灰太狼之??奇遇?)>과 <곰출몰의 보물 빼앗기(熊出?之??熊兵)>를 선정하여 분석하였다. 2000년대를 전후로 한 중국 애니메이션의 유머요인 특성비교는 이후 중국 애니메이션의 표현에 대한 발전적 논의로 이어질 수 있을 것이다. Since the launching of 〈The shepherd boy Piccolo〉 in 1963, a large amount of outstanding cartoons had been produced in China by the year 1980. During this period of time, international reputation was achieved with the extremely full expression and characteristic stories originated from Chinese culture. Decades of cartoons were produced ever year benefiting from support of the government in the last years. However, the quality and in fluence power dropped down comparing with the increasing productivity. The outward followed by examples of successful international box office most of the animation made in China. These cartoons did not obtain admitting internationally, or disclose any traditional speciality of China, although the domestic box office is considered to be fairly successful. The key factors to the successful cases should be analysed and researched rather than simply estimating, in order to achieve both artistic and commercial success. Factor of humor, as a key element of a successful cartoon is proposed in this thesis. Prior to the discussion, a general definition of humor factor is described through Henri Bergson’s comedy concept, based on which the key factors of humor will be analysed. A classification system would be derived and introduced as a tool for the analysis of humor factors. According to Henri Bergson, Humor is determined by circumstance, language and character factors. Humor factors are divided into visual, scene and acoustic factors in this research taking the Speciality of cartoon media into consideration. It is the speciality that, in addition to the visual and language factors, multiple acoustic elements are also introduced in such a presentation pattern. This classification system would be considerably applicable to the analysis of humor factors in Chinese cartoons. In this study, around the year 2000 to share the Chinese animation masterpiece were analyzed by selecting 〈The Monkey Creates Havoc in Heaven〉 and 〈Three Monks〉, 〈Meet The Pegasus〉 and 〈Boonie Bears: To the Rescue〉. This discussion about key factors of humor is likely to be beneficial to the development of Chinese Cartoons in the future.

        Original Article : A Disintegrin and Metalloprotease with Thrombospondin Motif 2 May Contribute to Cirrhosis in Humans through the Transforming Growth Factor-β/SMAD Pathway

        Background/Aims: We aimed to investigate the correlation between a disintegrin and metalloprotease with thrombospondin motif 2 (ADAMTS-2) and transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) in clinical human cirrhotic tissues. Methods: The liver tissues of 24 patients (16 cases with cirrhotic portal hypertension as the cirrhosis group and eight cases with healthy livers as the normal group) were collected. Immunohistochemistry and Western blots were performed to evaluate the protein expression levels of ADAMTS-2 and TGF-β1. Western blots for other key mediators of cirrhotic progression, including SMAD2, SMAD3, TGF-β receptor II (TGFβRII), matrix metalloproteinases 2 (MMP2), and tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases 2 (TIMP2), were also performed. Results: Cirrhotic tissues showed higher percentages of collagen. The protein expression levels of ADAMTS-2 and TGF-β1 were significantly higher in the cirrhotic group as compared to the matched normal group (p<0.05), and there was a positive correlation between these two proteins (r=0.862, p<0.01). The protein expressions of MMP2, TIMP2, and TGFβRII, as well as the phosphorylated forms of SMAD2 and SMAD3, were significant higher in the cirrhotic group (p<0.01 or p<0.05). Conclusions: These findings suggested that ADAMTS-2 and TGF-β1 may play important roles in the pathogenesis of human cirrhosis; specifically, TGF-β1 may induce the expression of ADAMTS-2 through the TGFβ/SMAD pathway.         Guidance Laws against Towed Decoy Based on Adaptive Back-stepping Sliding Mode and Anti-saturation Methods

        In order to meet the needs of high-precision guidance for missile-guided maneuvering targets in the presence of towed bait interference, this paper proposes a new guidance strategy based on heading angle method and parallel approaching method. Its main idea: a suitable angle is determined by heading angle method which of the missile trajectory is above that of the towing bait. Meanwhile, the accurate interception of missiles to targets is guaranteed by parallel approaching method. Firstly, system models of missile and target with towed decoy are established. Then, considering unknown bounded system disturbances, a controller is given based on sliding mode, back-stepping method. Furthermore, to solve the input saturation problem, an anti-saturation controller is given using adaptive and back-stepping sliding mode methods. Finally, strict proofs of the two controllers are given using Lyapunov stability theory, and simulations are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the two controllers.
