In this study, a chemiresistive sensor based on one-dimensional WO3 nanostructures is presented for application in non invasive medical diagnostics. WO3 nanostructures were used as an active gas sensing layer and were deposited onto a SiO2/Si substrate using Pt interdigitated electrodes (IDEs). The IDE spacing was 5 μm and deposition was performed using RF sputter with glancing angle deposition mode. Pt IDEs fabricated by photolithography and dry etching. In comparison with thin film sensor, sensing performance of nanostructure sensor showed an enhanced response of more than 20 times when exposed to 50 ppm acetone at 400°C. Such a remarkable faster response can pave the way for a new generation of exhaled breath analyzers based on chemiresistive sensors which are less expensive, more reliable, and less complicated to be manufactured. Moreover, presented sensor technology has the potential of being used as a personalized medical diagnostics tool in the near future.

Two new benzophenones, acredinones A(1) and B(2), were isolated from a marine-sponge-associated Acre-monium sp. Fungus. Their chemical structures were elucidated on the interpretation of spectroscopic data. The structure of 1 was confirmed by palladium-catalyzed hydrogenation, followed by spectroscopic data analysis. Acredinones A (1) and B (2) inhibited the outward K currents of the insulin secreting cell line INS-1 with IC50 values of 0.59 and 1.0 um, respectively.

Intensive insulin therapy effectively delays the onset and slows the progression of nephropathy in patients with IDDM. TGF-βhas recently been implicated in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. We evaluated the effects of different level of glucose control with insulin therapy on the progression of diabetic nephropathy in age-matched control rats(C) and 3 groups of streptozotocininduced diabetic rats', high blood glucose diabetic rats without insulin therapy(HG), rnoderate glucose diabetic rats with insulin therapy(MG), and normal glucose diabetic rats with intensive insulin treatment (NG). Glomerular volume(VG) was measured using Image-Pro morphometric software, glomerular TGF- βl mRNA expression by in situ hybridization, and glomerular expression of TGF-βand type IV collagen proteins by immunohistochemical staining. VG was significantly higher in HG than in other groups in 12 weeks. Kidney weight(KW) was the highest while the body weight the lowest in HG of all groups in 12 weeks. Daily urine albumin excretion (UAE) increased with time in all groups but was significantly larger in HG than in all other groups in 12 weeks. MG also had significantly larger UAE than C in 12 weeks. There was no difference in VG, KW, and UAE between NG and C. Glomerular TGF-βl mRNA expression was significantly higher in HG than in all the rest of the groups in 4 and 12 weeks. Glomerular expression of TGF-β and type IV collagen proteins was proportional to the levels of blood glucose, being the highest in HG in 12 weeks. There was little or no expression of TGF-β1 mRNA and protein or type IV collagen protein in NG. Thus these results support the view that high blood glucose is the prerequisite for glomerular injury in diabetes mellitus and that the glomerular injury in diabetes mellitus is mediated, in part, by TGF-β1 and suppressed by glucose control.

We analyze the movement of particles in an electric paper that consists of upper and lower electrodes. Particles inserted in a fluid move under the influence of an electric field when voltage is applied to the electrodes. The movement of particles is determined by the intensity of the electric field, the viscosity of the fluid, and the of the particles. Each factor has an impact on the independent particles. Considering these factors, we analyze the characteristics of the particles' movements. We analyze the behavior of the electric paper with experiments based on Stokes' Law.

Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis has become an acceptable alternative to hemodialysis for the patients of chronic renal failure in recent years. In spite of diverse benefits of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, it has a relatively troublesome problem of peritonitis. Common bacteria, namely, staphylococcal species, are the usual caustive agents. Fungi and higher bacteria such as Nocardia are not usual as etiologic agents in peritonitis undergoing peritoneal dialysis. We report one case of peritonitis caused by Nocardia associated with peritoneal dialysis with a review of literature.
